Chill first-time MSYS 21 prof, reqs pile up

Hi! I had Sir Luis for MSYS 21 last sem and I had a very positive experience in his class!! He’s really chill + I believe it was his first time teaching as he’s still doing his masters. For the most part, we had a synch every Tuesday and he would post an asynch lecture (10-20min vid) every Thursday. The modules were just recordings (he uploads them agad!), his presentation slides, and some “cheat sheet” notebooks. We had around 10 Exercises, 4 Module Projects, a synch Midterm (5 problems to solve in ~10 hours), and a Final Project that we had to defend synchronously. Deadlines were somewhat manageable, although they can get overwhelming. I believe deadlines were departmental though, so it might not be 100% within his control. Most exercises and projects were released Tuesday afternoons. Exercises were usually due Friday 11:59PM. Projects, Monday 11:59PM. So on weeks where you had both an exercise and a project due, you’d have quite a lot of work. He was very accommodating with extensions though, especially toward the latter part of the semester! We also had some activities where you could get bonus points added to your exercise grade and they were really easy to do. He’s also super approachable and we had a few consultations with him. I attended the Q&As and consultations even when I hadn’t started on the reqs yet HAHAHA but they were really helpful + he uploads recordings for class-wide consultations so you can refer to them while working. Slight downside was that it took a really long time to get feedback. It’s not just him who grades your work. I believe a few DISCS instructors and/or TAs do the grading since there are a lot of submissions to check. The first few exercises were graded within a week or so, but from the midterm onwards, we didn’t receive much feedback till right before finals week iirc. Class averages were always pretty high ++ they give submission comments about what they deducted points for, if any. Some of the projs and exers needed you to improve/add to your solution to a problem from a previous proj/exer, so the delayed feedback might be a problem for some. But just message him or attend a consultation and he’ll help you figure things out if you're feeling lost! Overall, a great teacher. Manageable workload. Provides lots of reference material + opportunities to consult. From my exp, his class was A-able with moderate effort! Super willing to take a class of his again 🤓 ++ Pretty sure he's gen z sooo don't be surprised to see a few memes and vine references in his slides!! He even rickrolled us in an activity once HAHAHAmore
