bump for COMM 191.08 Film Seminar: European Cinema
positive
also class time was used to watch one film! my tip is to pay attention to the first film para u can write ur reflection paper on that tapos use the later class times to work on other subjects or sleep HAHAHAHA. what my friends and i did was we assigned a certain person to take notes/make a summary of a film para the people who aren’t assigned can work on other subjects HAHAHA as petiks as it may seem, i really learned a lot from this class. sobrang worth itmore

taking him rn for COMM 191.08 Film Seminar: European Cinema!!
PRO
workload/reqs - not bad.
- he only gives a few reaction papers max is 8 and he doesnt rlly make you write a reaction paper for every film you watch
- theres also a short group presentation (he makes you choose a topic from the list he provides)
- theres also a final reflection paper but thats pretty much it
- but grading wise he's fair (got a few Bs for some of my reaction papers)
CONS
only bad thing is every requirement submitted should be in HARD COPY
> this includes the presentation slides (has to be printed and submitted to him)
- he doesnt really use emails or canvas so he rarely sends any announcements (got only 1 announcement from him this sem)
- its also sometimes hard to coordinate since theres no beadle
- the films he shows are sometimes triggering or painful to watch depending on the period
> he gives a few disclaimers here and there but not all the time
overall, hes a chill prof and being in his class is manageablemore
positive
pretty petiks tbh it was prolly the lightest class i took
requirements are just one reaction paper per module. each module had like two or four films i think (not sure talaga.. it could be more than that basta 2-4 minimum) tapos you had to choose from any of the films to write a paper about (or write about a common theme among all the films). tapos final paper was just another reflection paper.
there was a groupwork at the end of the sem where one group would present 3-4 films in class. pretty fun and easy esp if ur grouped with ur friends. unfortunately u aren’t able to choose ur groupmates (pero sir still grouped me with my friends HAHAHA).
sir valbuena was very insightful. after each film, he would explain or add some context. he’s also very experienced in the industry.
10/10 class if u want a petiks easy A class while still learning a lot about the local film industry. he’s also super kind like he even printed a copy of the syllabus for each of us 🥹. highly highly recommend. also his class was one of the reasons why i’m pursuing my thesis on philippine media hahamore
