I'm a HS major; just recently shifted sa program when I took this class. He's a solid prof, he made me want to do med school WKJAJGWLAKJWG Quizzes: un-announced, 1 per module * 1st quiz is about syllabus so make sure to attend the first day * gives 1-2 bonus items per quiz, based on the students' input on "what are your interests" during the first day (examples: who's the rapper that's also in Spider-man? who formed one direction? what Filipino movie is this scene from?") * lenient sa checking: he does not need exact words * some quiz items were from the discussion, most were from the readings; his powerpoints are not super helpful soooo * YOUR LOWEST and YOUR HIGHEST quiz scores will be removed from the total * don't be late/absent bc automatic 0 ka sa quiz, kahit 1 minute ka lang dumating after his roll call Recitations: namimigay siya ng token per recit, tapos isasauli sya ng students as end ng class * please read! maaga niya pinopost readings per module * sometimes, you can guess answers naman hehehe he'll help the class get the right answer * PLEASE RECITEEE Group requirement #1: Review a bill / republic act / health initiative * choose ur own groupmates * the bill / RA / health initiative should be related to the randomly assigned life segment (child, adolescent, maternal, adult?) * follow the rubrics * consult with him: he gives what ideas he wants to see in your work Group requirement #2: Come up with a health initiative that has never been implemented in the PH, pwede inspired from other countries * same groupmates * choose your own life segment * follow the rubrics talaga * consult NO WRITTEN EXAMS He gives special shit like when you have perfect attendance, your lowest quiz will be removed from the total ^__^ He's funny also ^__^ I love him. definitely a-able PLUS: I super love it when a prof remembers his students. I was in ASHS as an acet proctor and he was there for emergencies lang, and when I said hi, he said "hi gab, ba't ka nandito" PLUS PLUS: when we posted the readings for child health, he posted a disclaimer that said, "I know some of you will not be going to med school, but I hope you enjoy this module because you will, one day, deal with kids." let's raise kids the right way something something AND IT HEALED ME HUHUHUUHUmore

just finished taking this class, that being said: - TLDR: I DONT RECOMMEND THIS FOR NON-HS SENIORS LIKE ME LOOKING FOR A CHILL CLASS BUT DO SO FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN THE TOPIC + WANT A GREAT GREATTTT PROF 🙏🏻; - doc jian teaches/discusses the lessons well but YOU NEED TO TAKE NOTES (or take a photo of the slides if it's too wordy or if it has figures lol) bc HE WILL NOT post the slides on canvas. - gives numerous quizzes either announced or unannounced (at least once a week or so? but it's for u also bc info overload. had the quizzes been less frequently done, the coverage for each quiz would also have been too long for a 10-pt quiz - gives LOTS of bonus questions, this saved me a lot! mostly about the class' choice of topic (current news, uaap trivia qs, artists, movies, series, etc.) - he WONT COUNT YOUR LOWEST AND HIGHEST QUIZ so try to aim for an average grade each time + use ur cuts wisely - gives READ MEs for each module to guide u on the order of discussing the readings + other specifications - only recited once, the recit qs he had were specific esp at the start of the sem kasi so HS majors got most of the recit qs but the other qs on the latter parts were better esp for non-HS majors - took this because i was told there were no written exams but he updated his syllabus HSHSHSHS WE HAD A FINAL, COMPREHENSIVE EXAM and the majority of our section failed it including me (our mean grade for the exam was less than 60%) - does not curve afaik? got exactly what I computed for - a good thing to note though (i guess) is that compared to his quizzes, the exam was mostly multiple choice :)) - imo dont worry if ur quizzes are low bc it's just 15%(?) percent of your grade. focus more on the 2 group requirements which make up 50% of your grade! he'll give u a high grade as long as u follow the rubric + bonus points if u report eloquently in Filipino. - B+ with effort, A-able if ur an HS major/u have a chill sem unlike me bc i had 21 unitsmore

Commenting from the perspective of a non-HS major, taking HSCI 40i, not HSCI 80.1 so more on his teaching style. TAKE HIM if you really want to LEARN. 🥹 He's a great teacher and a doctor by profession. He made everything understandable for our class (but as he mentioned, he includes medical terms if you're in HS class). He knows his lectures well! He takes attendance seriously! Sometimes, “graded” recitation (which you can use to make “bawi” from the quizzes 😛). Grades fairly. Fair lang ang requirements (not too heavy, but not easy A). Anticipate a quiz or recitation every meeting. He also does some pambawi (aka bonus questions). Discover his “pakulo” when you enter his class na lang. 👀 Get good groupmates too! Overall, A-able with effort. Study, study, study. Doc Jian a cool instructor! P.S. Baka may bias sa non-HS major, but based on chika from HS class, he's a great teacher talaga!more

RUN 🏃♀️🏃♀️🏃♀️ JK! He loves objective type quizzes so if you read the journals/materials, it's better to understand the concepts than memorizing them. Again, anticipate a quiz every class meeting so read ahead of time. His quizzes can be tricky! so be careful all the time. It can be identification, multiple choice, enumeration, explanation (all are different breeds 😛). How to make bawi: bonus questions are SOOO random! It can be about cars, the Ateneo, OPM, etc. Group works are graded fairly! Apply the concepts well, explain well, convince him, then you're good! (A)able: great effort & very good groupmates (B+)able: great effort & good groupmates (B)able: enough effort & good groupmatesmore
