RUN AWAY! Load rev or drop the subject as soon as you got enlisted in her class. Why? Well compared to Francesca, mine's a little more straightforward. - In terms of attendance, she didn’t have a good track. Looking back I believe we only had less than 10 onsite sessions with her the whole semester. March we only saw her once and in April only twice. - Her number 1 rule is no haggling over grades. Why? Because this prof has some serious superiority complex. She wants to make you feel like she is the best one there is because all parts of her are credible. Now I do understand that we need to respect her decisions, but her instructions are unclear and she made most of us 0 in one of our discussion posts just because we did not know what kind of discussion she was looking for even if we referred to the reading she gave. She got mad when we were inquiring about this turnout. - She does not grade our works and does not give constructive feedbacks unless required by the university to submit their grades. We were having a hard time trying to test the waters because we did not know where the waters were. Basically, she just lets her student figure everything out on their own and if they get a low grade (without her guidance) and you ask about it, she won’t give a care. Which is why more than half of our class got a D in the advisory marks. - She doesn’t like students asking questions about her instructions. She’d rather say “Are you confused or you just did not understand?” With this, I’d like to add that she never responds to any kind of messages may it be on canvas or email. She just accepts messages through her personal number which can only be texted by our beadle. All of our questions were left unattended. - Her instructions are very CONFUSING. Her instructions from canvas are quite contrasting against the ones in the syllabus. But we cannot ask for clarification about it. - Her readings are very heavy, especially her discussion posts. She even made us summarize and analyze el fili and noli during the holy week break. - We did not learn much from her class because besides that we’re always online or asynchronous, our online synchronous are pre-recorded videos only and she will just ask synthesis questions before the session ends. - Her voice is too soft only the people sitting in front can hear her voice. - She does not bring her own device, instead, she borrows our classmate’s/beadle’s laptop for her presentations that’s why they cannot take notes. - She was caught by our classmate not listening to our presentations and was just scrolling through her phone the whole time. - In her lessons, she makes it interesting at first, but after a few minutes, the lesson becomes 60% about her and her upbringing. - Her grading system sucks and will fool you. It is unfair because you won’t get a chance to pull up your grades. With every point that you lose in your requirements is a percentage that you lose in your overall grade. For example, I got 25/30 in my midterms, the best overall grade I could get decreased to 95. - She makes it difficult for her students to ask questions until it becomes an anxiety for us. Students in our class just point at each other who will ask a question because she will definitely get mad. - She became kind and considerate only when the evaluation forms are out. - Until now, we still don’t know our class standing in this subject.more

TLDR: RUN AWAY! If you can’t load rev or the histo 12 class is pre-enlisted, read below: - Definitely NOT A/B+ able. Her grading system sucks. If i understood it correctly, for every one mistake, it’s a 1% deduction from your grade??? - She loves discussion boards. There’s a question or instruction you have to follow based on the assigned readings. There’s no max word count, so yap all you want! She likes an in-depth historical analysis, citing required & suggested readings and scholarly sources in JSTOR or rizal lib. Cite in chicago manual of style. - If you think you understand her instructions well, that’s also a time you should be in doubt. Clarify things with her!!! But do this onsite because she’s very late in replying to canvas messages. She doesn’t like emails. If you’re the beadle, you’ll communicate with her thru her personal number. - A lot of us got a 0 on our first disc board because finding rizal’s annotation from a book with so many pages was challenging. She didn’t really provide much detail regarding this. Citation is part of the rubric here BUT we weren’t given even a single point 🥲 She never explained why we got 0, how to improve, etc. - She did give us an opportunity to make up for that 0, but we wouldn’t get a full point daw. Here’s the thing... She said only certain people can do it lang daw?? But i think no one got an email about that or knew. When my bm begged, that was the time she actually allowed everyone to bawi. - She will grade stuff at the very last minute, so you’ll never know where u stand until u receive your advisory marks and maybe when u receive your final grade. Thats why work so hard on your disc boards. Rn i js hope i get a grade higher that my advisory mark… idk my grade for the last 3 disc boards… - DO NOT BE BEADLE in the class if (A) you do not want your laptop (that can be connected to a projector) to be used by her to present her messy and unappealing ppts. It’s unprofessional of her to not bring her own. (B) if you’re impatient in waiting for replies/a makulit texter. She’ll reply when she feels like it. - We rarely saw her cos most of our classes were online or asynch. While this can be good (since u can use ur time to do smth more productive), you won’t actually learn anything. When we had online classes, she’ll usually just play a recorded video lecture… - During onsite classes, stay in front. Her voice is so soft. It’s hard to hear. - We had 2 activities that we can get extra credit points from but it doesn’t guarantee that we’ll get a point cos she’ll still grade it based on the disc board rubrics. - Groupings are assigned BUT she’s open to having you transfer to another group if necessary. - You don’t need to attentively listen to her class and to take down notes. No written/oral exams.more

Con 1: It’s difficult to take notes. She only has a powerpoint 1/2 the time, and of those times, she stays on one slide for the whole session (the topic slide or the title slide or just the “table of contents”). Con 2: She legit just keeps talking and talking about different things, incorporating real life scenarios now and then, as if ranting. It’s hard to find the content of her lectures. Con 3: She assigns a lot of readings, but barely discusses them. Expect almost 1000 pages of reading split into around 6 modules, and she expects you to know the whole module when you go to class. She’ll talk about very minor concepts, and she’ll just assume you already know it. Con 4: Her assessments are so long. Single Spaced 5 Pages, on prompts that are overly simple. Sobrang mema to extend your answer to a one-liner question (which is usually the case for the prompts). Con 5: She barely returns assessments. Con 6: She has a lot of make-up classes, and usually, there are things that matter in those classes. Con 7: She may forget to upload a reading. She once forgot to upload the source material for our midterm paper, so the class had to find a copy on our own. (We were lucky enough to find an old edition of it online). Pro 1: Bola seems to work. Extending the paper and sounding smart, kinda works. She doesn’t seem to grade low on bola papers. Pro 2: She grades super high. Again, bola works. Pro 3: Alotta free cuts, if you’re into that. She has like a “Research break” week thing to let you finish a paper. Tip: I’ll be honest and say I read about like 5% of the readings she gave. I read the short ones just to say I did. For the others, I read the bolded headers and pretended like I knew what was up. I survived by doing my own research. I watched videos and read Wikipedia pages on those headers or topics, and I understood it better without going through all her readings. Get important lines from the readings (Command F lang the topics you need), and use from some of your own online or scholarly resources (she allows that) for papers. It’s A-able. Good luck!more

I had a different experience with Alfaro (vis-a-vis the comments above, which are just as valid!). I got her for Histo 12 for the first sem! I genuinely enjoyed her class. Learned so much from her super casual way of teaching and I think she’s pretty easy to impress naman. You don’t really have to read her longass readings (in my experience). Just listen to her in class and be engaging! If she’ll remember you, then that’s a good sign (as with any prof, I guess). Though she’s easily impressed—that is, of course, no excuse to slack off. Her grading system is pretty high. 95 is still a B+. Even the people who performed really well in our class got B+’s. And she’s absent a lot because of health reasons. But overall, I found her a super fun prof and learned tons!!! BONUS: if you get her, make sure you quote Ambeth Ocampo often hehemore

First off, condolences- Make sure you're caught up on ALL the readings- Her ppt's are genuinely useless and a pain in the ass to look at/understand, so you're better off just reading whatever she assigns (all info usually there)- A LOT of memorization (if you're good at it, it's an easy B+ at least)- Can't remember other quizzes but for our finals, it was a few fill in the blanks then some essay questions, so again, make sure you thoroughly read what she assigns and understand it, as you'll need to really go in-depth in your answers for her to give you decent scoresmore

Leaving this here for future searches but she was a prof who is very set in their ways. TL:DR Overall she is an ok prof where you have work hard to get good grades. Don't have any issues and always follow instructions otherwise it's a huge struggle. - She started out fine during the start of the sem. Her grading is quite strict and very rubric based as with most of the Histo profs, but yeah you have to work if you want super high grades. Def not an easy A or even B+, I'd say the class averages at B-C+. - For online, she usually just played her pre-recorded lectures in Zoom but answered questions. She is nice naman for vocal recitation as she loves hearing your opinion. - The Issues start when it comes to her handling of problems in class. She had given out instructions for our Finals that said that we had to do so and so based on our topic. The next bullet contained some subtopics or points of focus that my groupmates and I took note of. However, it wasn't made blatantly clear that the said topic was based on the group name we were given in the "People" tab on Canvas (Noli Mi Tangere or El Fili). My groupmates and I for our finals ended up doing Noli despite being named Fili simply because once we saw our group we didn't go to that tab anymore and the fact that the topics were our names wasn't mentioned ANYWHERE else. She then made that last week a hell bc she said she would grade the output out of "bare compliance" and proceeded to tell us a A WEEK AFTER THE END OF CLASS that she wanted us to re-do the output. We all BARELY made it to enlistment esp since HISTO 11 was a pre-requisite for our intersession subjects.more

She’s actually very nice once u get to know her kasi she’s very motherly and likes to chika a lot during class time. I’ll admit the first few discussions were quite boring but over time u’ll get accustomed to her vibe and even find her sessions insightful and eye-opening. Sorry to hear abt ur first quiz! Dw she curves naman if that’s what u worry abt HAHAHA. General tip for every assesement is to just read the readings and review the discussions. Dont overthink abt all the unnecessary details (like dates, detail heavy names, etc.). Mostly, the assessments will revolve around the main idea of the text, as well as some supporting details abt the readings and discussion that aren’t objective heavy. I suggest try to outline the readings in ur head as you approach them para u’ll really understand its meaning. Dw sa una lang yan! As long as she knows u make an effort in ur recitations + written works (like essays, projects etc.), she will give u good grades! I even got surprised sa grade na nakuha ko, hindi sya B+ 😜more
