Tl;dr: Took him this semester ('24-'25, 2nd Sem), and I must say: GOATED PROF SI SIR ASENETA!! Hands down, he's one of the profs that I had who taught really clearly. A-able with reasonable effort. Highly recommend:"))
On CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT
- At first you might feel intimidated by his class policies (e.g., alphabetical seat plan, no gadget policy or else he will really send you out even when it rings in the middle of the class), but if this is not a big deal for you, then you'll be fine! But nonetheless you would feel his care for his students! You may ask him in advance if you need to sit in front and he is really considerate about it hehe
- Does NOT check attendance (basta you'll be responsible for yourself especially when there's a quiz (more on WORKLOAD: Quizzes))
- Every session he would write down the agenda at the board; really organized and there was no instance that it wasn't followed since he has great time management!
- In line with previous point, he won't consume the entire period most of the time (only on rare cases)
On TEACHING STYLE
- Sir discusses the lessons in a concise manner, the type of lecture na hindi boring at makukuha mo naman agad if you listen intently
- He does not require us to read the readings since he would tackle the key points in class
- He provides class notes for every lesson beforehand which are essentially a summary of the lesson (and what would usually be reflected in his PPTs), so don't worry about taking note everything! Just take note of whatever is not in his PPTs hehe
- The connections between modules/concepts are really evident, which honestly helps for easier recall of the concepts!
- He also engages with the students well and has a lot of stories to tell about his life which are related to the lessons!
On CLASS REQUIREMENTS
- 10 Quizzes (20%): Expect a quiz at least once a week. But don't worry, it's mostly T or F, quite rarely identification, 5 or 10 items pero madalas 5 lang. No pop quizzes, and these quizzes would just test if you listened to his previous discussion, and it's easy as long as you listened intently and took down notes! Tho sometimes he would ask us to do online quizzes (indiv/group) if unforeseen events happen, and they're really doable! One time we were asked to play the role of a canon lawyer and examine a specific case whether it is a valid case for declaration of nullity, and it was quite fun to do hehe
- 2 Unit Exams (35%): As mentioned in another comment, this can get REALLY tricky. All multiple choice questions, some of which are terminologies, while most are true or false where you are given two statements at a time and you'll evaluate which of the two (or even both) is true (or false). So you really have to review and know the lessons by heart, and best if you really read and understood the readings!
- Final Group Comprehensive Orals (35%): This is not your traditional oral exam where you'll be given thesis statements. Instead of thesis statements, he will give you a list of real-life cases beforehand in which you have to respond to and apply everything you have learned in class in formulating your response. Honestly interesting yung cases and this would really train you to develop your pastoral sensitivity (i.e., not too rigorous and not too relaxed on Church teachings)! Really doable especially when your group has great dynamics (diba HAHA). He also grades relatively high for this one I think (considering that we got the case that we liked the least HAHA), especially when you give something new that he did not tackle in class!
- Class Participation and Conduct (10%): His recitations are easy! He'll mostly just ask for examples or for your opinions. He is more leaning towards consistency rather than reciting a lot towards the end of the sem to bump your grade. You'll be fine hehe
FINAL WORDS
- It would be beneficial if you take this class with someone, or kung wala, maybe this is your chance to get to know other people from your class (and Sir provides opportunities for that especially during group quizzes!)
- Sir provides bonus opportunities for quizzes/long tests basta umattend ka ng mga ipapaattend niyang talks. So if na-perfect mo naman lahat ng quizzes, may dagdag ka pa sa final grade. He really won't let you down hehe
- He would also take time to converse with you at the end of the session especially when you have burning questions/clarifications! He's really nice to talk to, parang life coach mo na or kuya kung baga hehe
- He's also really professional. For instance, if you brought up that something he said was unclear, he would admit and say something like "perhaps I should rephrase the statement".
- On a personal note, he's clearly one of my favorite professors in Ateneo. I love how THEO 13 became less "controversial" since he reiterates that everything discussed boils down to our vocation. His classes are really worthwhile to attend to, and I think that whatever state of life you are in--single or in a romantic relationship, his lectures would really speak to you. just finished our class for the sem with sir ruben yesterday and he's one of the best profs i had!!
readings: if ure not into reading, it might be challenging bc the readings can range from 12-30 pages long so there's a bit of variety naman. but there are a lot of tools u can use online and those can help!! the readings that i did read, though, are very interesting naman so i wouldn't say they're boring, i might just have a short attention span 😆
assessments: the only thing that might stand out are the pop quizzes! but u might see a pattern na rin naman after a while, most likely every beginning of the module. it may be hard bc it's unannounced but if u do ur due diligence naman with reading the texts, you're all good. we had one "media" output (bc it can be any form) which is fairly easy because you just have to introduce yourself but with an application of the readings. then, two one-page reflection papers which i can't give any feedback on yet because they haven't been graded. lastly, two oral exams, midterms and finals. again, if you studied and followed his guide, you'll be good na. his orals don't really have qna portions honestly if ure a yapper that's a plus 😆 he will ask questions lang daw (bc it didn't happen to me) if he's unsure of what grade to give you.
during class: he's not boring at all!! i'm a siesta person and our class is at 12:30-2 and i don't remember any instances where i got sleepy at all. he is fond of giving either life experiences or analogies when it comes to the more complex concepts. i also like how he structured the course like he introduced topics na i didn't know are a part of the course topic (i.e. marriage, family, & vocation) bonus tip: try to remember what u learned in philo 13 (ethics)! he is cery open to questions and also understanding of liberal perspectives/opinions! we have openly talked about homosexuality, sex, and even income inequality
A-able? i can say yes, but not an easy A. i think if u study enough, u can get a high grade. if you study harder, an A is very likely.more

Updated-ish Rating (both as his student and beadle)
1. Yeah the quizzes are mostly over 10, pero there'll be some na over 5. The test type varies so kinda just brush up on your notes frequently. It's not hard because it's really just checking if you learned anything from the readings (tbh just skim and identify key points/terms nalang) and or the previous lecture (having clean notes+highlights is a plus!)
2. Majority of the Assessments are by group -- get good groupmates/pairmates bc they'll really make an impact lalo na sa Finals.
3. Just follow the directions esp. when writing (vouch sa prev. reviews na he's strict dun)
4. He's kinda formal, so also follow yung format mo sa pag-email sa kanya -- he replies usually within 12 hours to a day (latest was 3 days pero once lang yan nangyari).
5. He posts occasionally on Canvas so be sure to brush up on those as well (to prep for ur tests)
6. Super understanding and accommodating -- just clearly communicate your needs and concerns to him and he'll make the necessary adjustments (+he really emphasizes on pastoral sensitivity when applying theo 13 concepts) -- i felt super comfortable engaging with the topics in class and tbh he would rather have a lively discussion deviating from his ppts than having a monotonous lecture.
7. Be aware of your lates/absences -- he takes note of that every single session.
8. Also take note of your class participation since kasama yan sa grading -- personally i just like theo in general so i really participated most of the time sa recits ko -- again just brush up on ur notes and have an inquisitive mindset.
All in all, would take him because of how balanced, fun, and engaging he is as a prof and yung content niya is super relatable to both irl and class concepts. He grades reasonably and fairly, pero it's not hard to get B+'s/A's in your assessments/outputs.
100/10 pls take him if batch 1 kayo. ❤❤❤more

Had him last semester and learned a lot from him (vv organized & easy to grasp) 😁 In terms of requirements, we had 1-2 short quizzes about the previous discussion or assigned reading every week (very easy! dw), + 2 long exams and class participation. The long exams are challenging since they make up a HUGE part of your grade, so really try your best on them. Overall, follow his class policies, attend and listen attentively to his classes, and you’re good—especially since the exams are based on his discussions.more

hello! I don't remember how much of the topics themselves were LGBT-friendly, but nothing was horribly bad (for reference im lgbt din so i would've noticed if anything was particularly bigoted!!), if they do come up he won't like hard denounce it but he will preface the lesson with a disclaimer that this is just the perspective of the church, and he will admit it is a bit outdated! definitely not as bad as it could be given this subject. some of the readings will sound a bit weird, but I don't remember ever seeing anything that was outright like It Must Be A Man And Woman so it's manageablemore

i initially thought easy A prof siya since nabasa ko dati na papers ang assessments niya pero bruh AHSHASHASH HE UPDATED HIS SYLLABUS SO READ REVIEW! personally ion like the true or false sa exam kase it's so nuanced and it'll make u overthink.. but don't?? basta u have to review ur notes and dont expect that ull see the answer right away coz he frames the statements differently.
u also dont have to read the readings lagi if ure like me na tamad hahsaash kase he gives quizzes naman after the lecture and not before it. make sure to peruse tho para makarecite ka or makasagot ka if matawag ka--> which is like first few meetings lang nangyari. after 2 weeks nawala na yung index cards ni sir hahsaha
love him sm coz he makes theo 13 easy to understand. he's literally spoonfeeding us sa discussions.

We often talk during class how sir is such a green flag when it comes to relationships (which is a good sign for someone that teaches the theology of Family, Marriage, and Sexuality).
There are some surprise quizzes but they're doable as long as you read the readings!
Overall, I feel like he's B-B+ -able with normal effort (I guess?) and if you exert a little more effort, an A could be possible! (His grade for an A is 95-100 to keep in mind!)more

yup!! he does his best to be sensitive and considerate hehe if I remember correctly, he always reiterates that whatever he is discussing is "based on the Roman Catholic perspective" and that if students have concerns abt the course content (e.g. any sign of discomfort or if u find anything offensive, etc.), u can inform him about it!!! don't really remember how much how he specifically taught human sexuality but i know is that it was rlly objective!! not much personal anecdotes, purely arguments lang based on catholic teachings:3more

sir ruben is a really good prof!! i found his classes to be so enjoyable and meaningful :DD i found his views on various topics so interesting, and i think the rest of the class thought so too bc people would always ask questions and for his opinions on certain issues! he used to give us quizzes at the start of the sem but he stopped, but we had maybe around 2-3 papers? expect oral exams for midterms and finals, but dw you can choose your pair partner for them. he doesnt allow gadgets whatsoever so you really have to take notes with pen and paper, but i found it easy to follow along with the discussion while taking notes and tbh i dont see it as a downside for myself since i always write on a notebook anyway. he's strict abt leaving the classroom tho – you're not allowed to leave the classroom for whatever reason unless sir calls for a break, so make sure to go to the bathroom beforehand; just know that he's a bit strict about cuts, but he's understanding naman and will try to give some leeway if ever. i got a B+ with some effort, but i personally think he's A-able!more

he makes his lectures so engaging and fun!!!! i truly learned a lot from him. he's a very effective teacher kasi nareretain mo talaga mga sinasabi niya. although, he always expects us to have read the reading beforehand kasi nagpapa-recit siya (be active in class!!! he doesn't bite naman). the readings imo were easy to digest. if medyo tricky man, sir has a way of making things simpler. FRRR his recaps at the end of the lesson are so good. im amazed at the way he's able to connect one part of our lesson to the other.
i also learned a lot of things outside of theo 13 lmaoo he taught us a bit of sex ed (that i wouldn't know otherwise if he didn't say it in class). he also shares so many fun facts like his time at the yellow school (iykyk) and his ex 😭 (to the point that i thought sir hasnt moved on yet)
anyways, he remembers his students' name, and you can feel that he genuinely cares abt them. i asked to be seated in front bc of a personal condition and he said ok no problem naman agad. his quizzes are very easy lang, you just have to understand the reading. the quizzes are no erasures though (can use a pencil naman before writing the final answer in ink)!! his recit questions are also answerable basta nagbasa ka. i think he even allowed us to look in our notes during recit? his long tests are very objective. medyo tricky siya if you don't pay attention to the questions' wordings.
ANYWAYS, BEST THEO PROF EVER. 💯 i loved going to class bc of him !!

- no phones allowed
- no orals. only quizzes (every other meeting), long tests, and recits (he has index cards w the students' name)
- dont enter the room while prayer is on going
- he gave us a lot of bonuses !!! in recit and activity (we just had to attend & participate in an event during class time and we got recit points for it)

- reading assignments were very manageable (almost always less than 10 pages) and easy to understand. all the readings were accessible through a gdrive folder which was very helpful.
- discussions were always engaging! i usually don’t like theo but i loved listening to his lectures. he really explains well.
- he’s strict when it comes to gadget use!! you’ll have to have the readings printed out + you have to keep all your devices on silent/off
- we had 10 short quizzes and 2 unit tests throughout the sem. quizzes were heavily based on his lectures, so if you listened well you would be able to answer well. unit exams were on the more challenging side imo, but if you did the readings you’ll be more than ok.
