I think much has already been said about how meticulous he is (almost, if not totally pedantic). Much has been said also about how he gets moody and how he sends people out just because they don’t have the reading or because their phone rang in the middle of class.
A lot of people interpret that as overkill (and maybe it’s just the “terror prof apologist” in me)—but I genuinely think he acts perfectly within reason. I mean... we’re in college and the syllabus was very clear about classroom policies. So violate that and suffer the consequences. Simple. Nothing personal. Really just business.
His standards are high and I think every teacher in this university should have high standards because it really pushes people to the limits and helps them become the best possible versions of themselves.
He has quizzes which are very doable naman (A-able even). A lot of quizzes are done by groups (called: Havrutah Groups). Just make sure to remember his discussions, APPLY it to your analyses in the group quiz (which are essays), and cite properly and cite well!
Long tests are okay but you have to study for it. Oral exams, super high standards. Only 3 people out of 90-100 students got an A. But again, these standards should not deter you but encourage you! Well, I speak for myself.
But really, what changed everything for me were the lectures. He helped show me how faith is not blind obedience and that it HAS TO make sense. He couples his systematic theology with Church History and other Church Documents—and wow. I really have a more mature understanding of my spirituality now.
His lectures are also really funny sometimes! Just engage in class and ask questions! He’s genuinely one of the smartest professors I know. He is the reason why I fell in love with religion all over again (but more maturely and intelligently now). He is the first reason why I want to teach Theology.
You’ll find a lot of other comments of praise down here from his former students—and it really is well-deserved. But if you don’t believe them or me. Take it from someone more...established.

i took sir justin last year and didn't have any problems? yes he graded a bit low but it takes effort to do well in his class. u have to engage with the concepts, think critically abt them and think of examples/analogies so u can get ur point across. i didnt do so well sa narrative and did pretty ok lng sa written exam but what helped my grade a lot was the orals. the orals were fine and he went out of his way to thank me and my partner for engaging in his class 🤷♀️ ended w a B+ i believe
if u pay attention sa lectures and try to engage with the content hes great, does a very good job explaining, and imo engages the class well. the hand out costs money and makes u go to LST, yes, but tbh i found it worth it. the handout is super comprehensive and helpful; i missed a few sessions and missed some of the more complicated thesis statements but the module saved me for orals.
yes, the content of the handout is not diff from the lectures, but the lectures are meant to make the handout less complicated, give examples. the point is not to differ from the written material, its to expand on it so u can engage with it in a lecture rather than just on paper. when u take philo ur classes will probably look like this also.
i don't know if he maybe changed anything since then, but his lectures weren't AI at all. his recorded lectures were zoom lectures from pandemic. but idk maybe he changed it

so late but my he’s been my fave prof to date! (ily sir badion) his lectures were very very interesting and it made it so that even someone who wasn’t religious like me could still take away A LOT from his class. he’s super knowledgeable (to the point na your headings are gonna be solely handouts that he himself wrote) so you’re def in good hands. he’s very progressive and open-minded and it’s clear he cares abt the classes he teaches.
i hear he changes his reqs on a bi-sem basis but overall his workload is pretty moderate i would say. in my experience, he had 3 modules with 2-3 online quizzes (unli re-takes) and a project each. the projects were fun for the most part (esp his faith narrative! you just yap about your own personal journey).
you also have a written mid-term thats highkey a beast (as in you have to write at light speed if you wanna finish on time) but if you study it’s very easy since it’s a very straight forward for the most part.
there’s a final oral/written (12 thesis statements, you randomly get one to discuss) which is pretty daunting but u get to bring an annotated thesis statements paper w u so u dont have to worry much!
overall, i rly vouch for sir. if you don’t want to put in any effort he’s not for u because he def isn’t an easy A. but if you’re looking for a manageable class that you’ll actually enjoy, i highly recommend sir’s class :]]more

Hhmmm..., related to that. Ok, I'll give some anecdote. I forgot what reporting topic I had with my groupmates, I think it's issues with distributing the Communion. I used the CCC to explain my point. When he evaluated us before the class, he expressed reservations (at least) with the CCC. He spoke along the lines that the CCC is not applicable in our geographical (i.e. Philippine) and temporal context, despite it being the official catechism for church-wide use, and suggested that we use CFC instead. Hence, my reminder regarding Catholic sources.more

I also used to live more than an hour away and I commuted everyday. If i were 2 mins late, he would send me out the class. I got a D (my lowest grade ever) because ofc i missed 2 quizzes and those 2 times, he was the one who sent me out lol! We also used moodle (i think) and I was so new to the platform, I accidentally submitted a homework in the wrong feature but I submitted it early, thinking I had no issues with the submission. And he didn’t accept it cause “it had no timestamp”more

this was the only class as a freshman where it was required to buy the handout. I heard from other people from different Theo classes use slides or just use the bible so its a professor thingmore

TAKE IT! Theo under Badion is one of the best classes I’ve had last sem. He made me want to understand the universe further 🥺 Also, he explains ideas well!! His passion for theology is evident as he teaches. You’ll definitely learn a lot. He likes it when students participate in his class and always entertains questions and clarifications abt the lessons. Although he’s very strict when it comes to his policies (attendance, deadlines, phones), he’s still super nice!!! HE ALLOWS CHEAT SHEETS JAKSKSKS!!! I really appreciate Sir Badion. He is really engaging in class and he gets to put a lot of thought into faith and all the things related to it. You really have to witness what he discusses, because they're quite beyond what is expected in a theology class. He's also not judgmental, so if you don't necessarily subscribe to Christianity, he's fine. Oh, one tip - please make sure you bring your readings/modules in class. They're really important.

My favorite Prof in ateneo so far! Made me love theology and appreciate Christianity so much more especially being someone that started to dislike it due to being raised with Christianity being too traditional. He's open to any questions you have about religion and entertains them as though they are relevant to the topics at hand. Engage in the lessons and he'll appreciate it greatly.
In terms of papers, be honest about your experiences about your own spirituality and what you believe in. I find that vulnerability and honesty makes your message very clear. The entire course is all about narratives and learning from them as a means to better live out your spirituality. He likes discussing the perspectives of the marginalized and incorporating social issues into the lessons, so doing so in the papers should help. Also try to incorporate as much readings you can to the final paper. Integrating the lessons is the goal.
in terms of grading, it's A-able. just put in the effort and allow yourself to learn 🙂more

his stories make u never want to cut class for real legit so funny and such an animated professor that makes class very engaging! but he has high expectations and can grade kinda low. not sure if his requirements changed from when i took him last year (we were his first set of students for theo 11) but the midterm was difficult since it was crazy objective (like name the midwives of moses 🥴)
can be strict with attendance, noise, and bringing of the reading. so make sure ur class doesnt get on his bad side and u always bring ur reading!! would def take again, he makes u fall in love with theo even if u arent religious tbhmore

I took doc Badion in the 2nd sem of sy 24-25 and my experience was totally different from yours. While, yes, he can be a bit of a tough grader, there's definitely lots of opportunities to get your grade up. For one, you can take the canvas quizzes as many times as needed til you get an A. That alone should be super helpful in keeping your grades up— unless he's changed that system in the last year. The faith narrative and oral exam were also fine, as long as you stick to the material you learned in class. His whole thing was making sure you stay close to what was in the modules, which may entail some memorizarion, but it really wasn't that bad. His discussions were super engaging and while they weren't a far departure from the hand out, I found that his lectures really helped to solidify my understandings of the module. I can't speak on the AI modules because we didn't have any of that at all. And on the handout, I truly didn't mind paying for it because it contains literally everything you need to do well. All it required then is some effort to read and grasp.
I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Doc Badion but tbh his class is one people can do well in (I for one got an A and many of my friends got a B+ or a B) it just requires effort and attention.more

Sad to see that he hasn't changed. I had him for theo way back in 2016 and he was the same, we learned much later that he really is temperamental and makes decisions based on his mood alone. He was also really big on playing favorites - whether he has individual favorites in your class or prefers a whole class over others. Your grades will also be massively affected by that. It's sad because he actually is a good prof and has so much knowledge to share, he's just too fickle to be impartial about how he teaches and cares more about his own mood swings in the moment than the students.
He honestly has what it takes to be a legendary prof, if not for how he arbitrarily decides on who he wants to be a good prof for or not.more

Sir badion was my very first prof in Ateneo and I will never forget him! I think about the things I learned in his class almost everyday. Sad that people are painting him as a terror prof just because hes passionate and demands excellence.
Hes def a tough love kinda prof but his lectures are amazing and he communicates all his instructions very clearly. His handouts are very comprehensive and hell never test you on anything he didnt teach or give in advanced. If you just listen in class, study, and TRY OR PUT EFFORT, youll be fine!more

Reasons
- Grades low. A lot of people get low grades in the quizzes, group works and every assessments.
- Got really bad scores in most assessments. I asked how to get better in email and all I got was an email that summed up to "just read better" but no concrete way to actually improve and have a better grade.
- AI slop modules, you have to watch hours of AI lectures talking about the module when it could have been talked in an actual session.
- Lectures are boring and I do not know anyone who learned anything different from the handout
- You have to pay for the hand out and you have to buy one for each module in the theo building.more
