hes one of my favorite profs !
lecture wise:
- like the other comments have stated, sir code switches between english and filipino
- he often discusses filipino media and how it relates to the masses (i’m not sure if that’s how it usually is or he adjusted his content kasi most of us sa class noon ay bfa id majors 😅)
- he loves students that are outspoken! he often invites students to recite n he doesnt really force you to do so. but i think his materials are so engaging that you tend to recite too :))
- he roots his lectures in advocacies and in the masses. so aside from his lessons, you’ll also need to inform yourself of social issues outside of the classroom.
- be sure youre ready with a 1x1 photo of yourself hehe
- be sure to read his readings! most of them arent that long and u can finish them agad!!!
workload:
- sir didn’t really give us a final paper to work on :DD
- he gives surprise quizzes but they arent long. just read the readings! and make sure to take notes rin
- maybe its cuz we were mostly bfa id but he mostly gave us creative outputs !
- i’m unsure if this affected my grade in anyway but make sure that u answer any discussion board that sir asks you to answer. kahit optional or not!! i think in some way it also affects your participation in class!
- we did a few groupwork activities in class ! mostly presentation though. make sure to be really nuanced when you do your analysis works!!
grading:
- dont be worried if you think you scored low on quizzes or you have a hard time with filipino! sir kind of sees if you actually try and do your best in class
- i always did bad on my quizzes since i’m not good w memorization 😭 but i did my best with the creative outputs and i ended up with an A!
outside academics:
- sir is one of the nicest profs ever :)) when he found out i didnt pass my scholarship he told me to email him again if i ever apply again so he could do my recommendation form!
- hes very concerned with his students 😅 he definitely notices if youre sick and checks up on his students!
- very enlightening subject ! as long as youre genuine and you put your best foot forward definitely B/A-able with effort :))more

Hello! I took him two years ago for Fili 11 and I super liked his class!Back then our requirements consisted mainly of short quizzes based on the reading for that week. The readings were frequent but not too long so studying them wasn't too difficult, and the quizzes weren't hard either (mostly memorization of some details/terms found w/in the reading)Aside from these quizzes, he also had us do a group presentation and a group paper. For the latter, we were made to discuss about a pop-culture word/phrase and how it is used by Filipinos. The last weeks of class were used for consultations about the paper. Sir also graded pretty leniently w regards to my group's paper as well; we wrote an essay on memes and naka-A kami dun HAHAHHAHAHAH (sir also helped us expound on the points we wanted to make on the paper, so make use of the consultations if there are any!)When it comes to teaching, we could see sir was v passionate about the subject matter. Plus points din also bc he doesnt speak in monotone so class w/him in general is very lively and engaging. He talked a lot about pop culture as well in his Fili 11 class, so he might end up using doing more or less the same thing? (dont quote me on this tho!!) but the stuff sir says during lectures def has a lot more meat than just relying on the lecture slidesI'm not sure how much of the above gets translated into his online classes, but for sure masaya siya as a prof! Super chill long as you don't abuse his kindness, lively and interesting lectures, and I'd say A-able as long as you dont slack too hard on the readings if there are anymore

Just to add, when you’re in his class, don’t be pressured to speak in pure Tagalog. Using Taglish whether or not you’re reciting or presenting is totally okay for him. On that note, avoid reading off of a script whenever you present. It shows that you’re not confident in your knowledge of the material as he is testing if you comprehend what you are saying in the first place.
When it comes to grading, I like to think that the grade you get is commensurate with the effort you put in that subject or your genuine interest to learn. He will adjust the syllabus as the semester goes on which shows that he is willing to accommodate changes:)
Just have fun in his class, but don’t forget to be respectful 😭 When he jokes around it’s just light so don’t take it personally ^_^more

Hello I second this!! I had him for Fil 11.1 too and he was a fun prof to have and as long as you show him you’re making an effort, it’ll likely reflect in the grades. Also when he gives long quizzes, he talks a lot during them and practically answers half the questions for you, so go!!! He usually gives the practice exercises in class too, so he’s there to help out and help give easy points woomore

I felt as if he took my cuts against me cause I honestly performed well but I maximized my cuts and I ended up with a C/C+ lol which is close to impossible from happening because I’ve lived in the Philippines all my life (I just studied in an international school) OR maybe because he realized I had a way better grasp at the language he gave me higher standards but I don’t think that’s allowed hahamore

hello! i had him for FILI 11.1, Q1 and he is one of the best profs that i had!! ❤️😩✊🏻 besides being A-able, his class is definitely something you should not take for granted. he values learning the practical and relevant, rather than memorizing the modules! whether you can speak fluent Filipino or not, your effort to learn is what matters the most. to add, i could see how he is really passionate about what he teaches, which made learning experience for me much more significant and memorable. he is also really flexible with schedules and considerate to different concerns — so don’t be afraid to ask questions though he may take 1-2 working days to reply. nonetheless, he is super clear with his messages and super approachable! in terms of deadlines, he would have a set date for all the assignments, but they are not due until the end of the quarter!more

Avoid Carlota. Empaynado was one of the best profs I had. He helped me improve both academically and personally. He's also very forgiving in terms of grades but I think Lopez is more chill and easier to get an A from all that I've heard about him.more

empaynado ka for fil 12.1 noh??I had Sir Jomar for Fil 11.1, and he really tries to ensure that everyone understands and is up to speed, otherwise he slows down and makes the class work together to understand how and why words/phrases work a certain way. Very considerate and kind, and while he rarely gives out A's, it's next to impossible to get lower than a B unless you like outright try to get him to hate you HAHAmore

Can't speak for online classes, but onsite, this man is a beast of a teacher. 20/10 would take again. Lessons tackled issues in a way that felt extremely relevant. Filipino as a cultural phenomenon and in its applications will make you appreciate what it has to offer. Very chill prof. Grouping is key for classes but even without a great group, you should take his class for the experience.

Sir Empaynado can speak soft at times, but he's a very well learned individual, and in my opinion, actually a prof with the soul of a college student HAHA he can appear to be strict sometimes but he's one of the profs I got to know best when I had him. He likes his papers, but he also likes his students well-prepared. You can have fun in his class, just don't be too rowdy or else prepare for either a walk-out or a sermon. He rarely gives out A's, but average class grade with him would be B/B+ naman so he's pretty good. He will, however, give out an A if he feels you deserve it, and if he thinks you do, he'll actually go out of his way to try and get you the A you deserve. :) Overall, he's a great prof, you're in for a treat!more

If you miss orals and and finds that "out of character" of you (meaning he knows you always submit on time, participate, etc.), he'll let you do it the next day with no deductions as long as you don't disappoint him. Empaynado is solid. I had him for Fil 11.1 and he makes his lectures really engaging and fun. He encourages the class to help each other in improving on the language. He is A-able if you really give your best and listen to his lectures. He posts the ppts. He’s also approachable and fun to talk to even outside class. He really focuses on helping us learn, improve and be confident in the language (both writing and speaking). He’s a linguist so he adds some historical background here and there but he’s still cool. Whatever is used casually in Filipino or for everyday use, that’s what he focuses on. His readings were in English but that was for Fil 11.1. He is also very considerate no matter what level you are in (Beginner, Intermediate, Advance). He gives a lot of practice exercises, but in general the workload is doable :)) he’s no doubt one of my favorite profs during 1st sem.more
