Harsh critique but you will actually learn

Sorry for the wall of text I love this prof hehe I took her for ballroom last year and am currently taking her for tap dance. She’s about what you’d expect from a dance instructor who is in her 80s, kinda harsh with her critique but you can trust that if you are willing to learn you WILL learn something. Don’t listen to anyone who says that she just moves on when nobody gets the move she taught because she explicitly states several times through the sessions that she is willing to repeat what she taught if even one person in class asks or if it looks like the class just doesn’t get it. A lot of us even approach her before and after class to clarify moves and she always teaches us with no complaint. That being said, if you want to have a free PE, avoid her at all costs because you will be expected to put in some effort. Her classes are ones that you’ll only really enjoy if you genuinely want to learn the dances that she’s teaching. Her more unpleasant attitude comes around whenever she sees someone clearly not practicing or putting in the effort that they should be. One of the worst classes you can pick if you don’t care about PE. The workload is kind of conflicting to judge because I have no idea what is being taught in dance fundamentals, but if we’re going by the structure I’ve experienced for the other classes. Ballroom had 4 choreographies while tap dance had 5 + the final group choreography. She really takes the time to go through all the steps so that you can take the time to process them before the next session. The first session always has you write the history of whatever dance you are taking but that’s the only time you’ll ever write a paper in her class and I’m not sure how that will apply dance fundamentals. Shes very considerate when it comes to the learning speed of the class as there have been a few times where she would change the song to one with a slower tempo if the class cannot keep up or even allowing people to tap out of the exam that day and take it the next session without any deductions. Her grading system is out of 10 for every exam and honestly? It’s kinda brutal if you’re aiming for a 10. I’ve missed out on 10s in tap dance because I made one incorrect step (not exaggerating my pride was very wounded) despite the rest of my performance having correct moves. That being said if you’re aiming for a passing score then as long as your moves are generally correct and you don’t freeze throughout the whole exam (it’s completely normal and more valid than it sounds) then you’re good. I do have to give a very clear warning though, she takes attendance very seriously. In the rare times she opts for async sessions, you will be required either to join an online meeting (in the case for ballroom) or send in a video of you practicing within the day (in the case of tap dance). She generally only chooses to NOT do onsite class if there is a transport strike or Ateneo made an announcement for suspension. Misc comments: - She only memorizes last names - The song choices are quite fun, some of my favorites include: What I’ve Been Looking For - High School Musical Hit The Road Jack - Ray Charles Bad Romance - Lady Gaga Break My Heart - Dua Lipa Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars - She has a lot of fun stories - I can now say I watched a Cocomelon video for PE TLDR: Don’t pick her if you want an easy PE but if you like dancing, I urge you to pick her and have fun learning from one of my favorite profs of all time 🫡🫡more

Fun ballroom with a real workout every class

Hiii, I had Miss Kimpo for Ballroom Dancing and I can say she’s a rly good prof! We learned a total of 4 different dances throughout the whole sem. I can say her class is fun but ur for sure gonna get a workout every class. Grading: in our practicals it was -1 per mistake but sometimes she lets some mistakes slide naman. She’s also a little particular whether you are on beat or not with the music, so practicing with musics with different tempos are a must since the music is different for every pair during the practicals. How it worked for us when picking out our partners was during our first practical we were paired randomly, the last 3 practicals we got to pick our partner, and during the finals the partner and dance were bunutan. Teaching style: Miss is very accommodating to clarify any questions you may have about the dance. Just make sure to voice out your concerns because if not Miss will just immediately move onto the next step. Personality wise: Miss is a super sweet and understanding person. She’s kind of like an active lola (she’s 82 and is super active and dances better than everyone in the class). During rehearsals she also immediately points out your mistake if she sees it, even if it’s a small detail lang. Overall, you’re in good hands! I found the class super fun but I was always super sweaty after 😅. She also gives the session before the practical to rehearse the whole routine(as in you’ll just keep dancing non stop for the whole period-) but yes super enjoyed it and as long as you’re willing to learn and put in the effort you’ll do great!more

Hi! I got Ma’am Linda for PEPC 11.13 AY 2024-2025, 2nd sem! Personality-wise, Ma’am is super nice and sweet!! Like what the others said, she gives off motherly vibes :)) I could see that she really wants you to learn from your mistakes talaga. She dances well rin, and tbh I love her when she dances, nakakatuwa. When it comes to requirements, she requires a group reporting, multiple practicals (per group, but individual grade), and 1 long test (written). Her requirements naman are very doable. Concern ko lang dito is paiba-iba lang ang groupings which makes it magulo. Teaching style naman, medj mabilis ang pacing. We learned all the basic dance steps, 1-2 sessions lang, and ang layo ng practicals date namen from the days she taught it 😭 HUHUHU !! Also, our lectures involve her saying what are in the PPTs + she also asks participation from the class too!! I admit that I mostly self-taught for the other topics since medj malabo talaga TT Sa grading naman, she gave all our scores back (except for our long test) after finals so I didn’t really know what was my standing HDHJSHAHA !! Pero you can consult naman to her when it comes to your grades or ask her after practicals on how did you do. She’s very particular with your feet movements, and if you are in sync sa music! -1 per mistake, and take note kapag practicals its over a 10, pero in canvas its /100. So lets say if you got an 8/10 sa practicals, it becomes 80/100 sa canvas. Kinda got pressured considering her class was supposed to be fundamentals TT. I suggest get another prof for this type of PE!more

VOUCH (hello dance partner 💃🕺) though op, not sure what ur gonna expect since thats PEPC if im not mistaken, but do know na ur in good hands with maam linda! such a sweetheart if u do small talk with her before or after class + she may allow u to practice after the session (minsan din mag sit in / maki practice with the next class)! re: grading, be sure to practice until u get the countings down or the name of the steps as u do it para makabisado mo + be on time! maam checks attendance as soon as the second bell rings and counts it as late if u miss the roll call 😅 also, complete uniform lagi! incomplete ang attendance mo if otherwise ^^ overall, its a fun class lalo na't makikilala mo somehow classmates mo and just laugh over anything and everything dahil pagod ka na kasasayaw 🤣 hope u have fun, op!more

very beginner friendly, i'm not athletic at all but had a great time in ballroom dance :>> i got a B+ but i think it's A-able if you're lucky with your partners and you practice the dances outside of class time take the class!!! you only have so few opportunities to take an "unusual" pe hahamore

Didn't actually teach, plays favorites, nitpicky grading

  • Retake?No

might be an unpopular opinion but most of the people i know didn’t like kimpo after we took her 😭 for basic dance fundamentals, at least, she didn’t actually “teach” us anything she just told us to search the dance up and we had to learn it from the videos. so if we got it “wrong” or the tutorial video we found wasn’t accurate, she would tell us off when we were practicing and put us down when we got the moves wrong. she only finds the initiative sometimes to correct you but it’s not in a kind way and she will miss some details that when it comes to the final presentation you wouldn’t even know it was wrong. she also has clear favorites in class and if she didn’t like you it would show in her grading (more nitpicky but also ifl it was attitude grading lol) and the way she talks to you and it would carry throughout the semmore

Best PE that I ever had, motherly mix of strict

positive
  • Retake?Yes
Best PE that I ever had!! Our class was really tight-knit in Ballroom:DD Miss Kimpo would always be willing to help us ++ give comments so that we could improve on our steps. She's also willing to be your partner if you really need some guidance. I love how she's a good mix of understanding and "strict" too, but she has that motherly love that made me always look forward to her class. She'd demonstrate steps again and again in case we got lost, so I never felt embarrassed to feel lost. Would take her again definitely!! S/O to my amazing dance partners and!!more

Hardest dance class, she demonstrates but barely teaches

mixed
As a dancer (in other genres) of 10+ years, ngl its actually hard Between streetdance, fundamentals of breakin, and bellydancing, this was the hardest by far. Ppl are right when they say she doesn’t actually teach, she’ll demonstrate it once or twice and you’ll have to ask questions for her to break it down further. That being said, if you are comfortable with dance, it can be really fun! Just choose good partners and ask as many questions as you need!more

strongly agree w anon 990 took her for gymnastics (stretching) her niceness is exaggerated in these comments because overall she's really passive-aggressive. she HATES switching modality, even if she's the only class most of the people have that day. so if there's a typhoon or transport strike (and classes arent suspended by ateneo) u will have class 😂 if it's suspended due to a typhoon and strike, she will require you to submit a video. we also spent half the semester memorizing her zumba dance and then making our own 😃😃😃. we only really started stretching and doing gymnastics related things towards the END of the sem. she is super harsh when it comes to grading. OA FOR A PE PROF LIKE 😭😭😭⁉️⁉️⁉️ every step u get wrong in her 100 step zumba routine will automatically give you a minus 1 and it's only out of 10 🤠🤠🤠 anyways, ive had pe profs that were so much more understanding. i wld not recommend maam 😃💔more

Unpleasant tap: show once, grade low

ALSO AGREE WITH ANON MEMBERS 990 AND 263 I took her for tap dance and it was the most unpleasant PE I’ve ever had to take. She’s very passive aggressive and will only show you the steps once or twice but expect you to memorize it on the spot. She grades very low and will ask some students to repeat. I’ve heard stories of her yelling at the class before us too (?). What annoyed me the most was when I asked her if she could provide at least a list of the steps on canvas or a demo, she said we should make a demo ourselves… Best advice I can give you is have a student who’s injured or can’t participate that day to take note of all of the steps for everyone. You can also voice record the last few minutes of the session when the class is doing the whole routine too because she’ll call out the steps and you can transcribe it later on.more

love her oh my god had her for tap dance and ngl could've done better but that was on me 😂 she's pretty iconic! she dances so well for her age it's insane!! you can tell she loves what she does n it translates to her teaching. id say though as a beginner it was a bit difficult catching up to her sometimes, at least compared to my more experienced dancer classmates, but it's nothing a little practice can't address hehe. take her at least once !!! unique ateneo PEs ftwmore

have taken her for ballroom and tbh idk why older reviews on her are so good, it’s the most unpleasant PE i’ve ever had. she’s *nice* overall but passive-aggressive at times. the type to demo something once and move on even if a majority of the class clearly didn’t get it. fully onsite also, only held asynch classes because of emergencies (but she’d still require video submissions) - not considerate when it comes to shifting modalities. nitpicky when it comes to grading. if you’re confident at keeping up, memorizing, and being able to attend every session, i guess you could take her. would not recommend if you’d rather have a more relaxed class.more

Inspirational tap grandma; A despite mistakes

Took her for tap dance, but I can vouch for Ma’am! She is so inspirational honestly. She is almost 80 (I don’t know her age exactly but it’s above 70 iirc) but dances better than me. Grading: Every mistake is a -1 but you can get away with some mistakes if she weren’t able to catch it. I thought I’d get a C+ because I only perfected like one dance routine, but I got an A so I think she is more lenient in grading. Teaching Style: Active grandma vibes cause she is! She always answers questions and repeat steps if must. Personality: Very approachable, don’t be shy or anything. She is also very accommodating. You can plead to move dance performance deadlines with her but don’t abuse!more
