Hello, anon, I had Ma'am Soriano for ENLIT 12 last school year. I'm not sure if the way she handles ENE 13.06 is different from how she teaches ENLIT 12, but I'll say that our discussions under her were very closed. I often felt that she asked questions with an idea of the answer she wanted to hear, and she would pretty much shut down all other answers until she got the one she wanted, then move on to the next question/discussion point. I personally felt the readings were alright (I loved M. Butterfly in particular); but I would definitely warn you to temper your expectations for her discussions unless she's significantly different in ENE 13 for some reason. We had to write an essay for our midterms and finals, with each accounting for 20% of our grades. The rest of our grade comes from class participation and a variety of short activities (ex. reading responses, presentations, etc.). Honestly speaking, I don't really understand how she grades. She does not return papers very quickly (after the first two weeks, I'd say it takes about a month?) She's difficult to consult with - her consultation hours are short (in our case, they overlapped with one of our classes, which made it even more difficult), she doesn't respond quickly via Canvas or email, and she tends to give very vague responses when you do answer questions. She didn't give any feedback on our class presentations (I do think all the groups got roughly the same score, though - I think high 80s for one and low 90s for the other?). And she has no reservations about giving low grades for written activities - if not for her grading suddenly becoming much nicer in the second half of the sem, I think I would have gotten a really bad grade for her subject 🥲 That aside, I do think it's paramount to keep your answers concise. And even if you're not sure if your answer for the question matches hers, come up with a stance and stick to it - don't try to waffle and give a non-committal answer, it will NOT work. Also, I think she doesn't like students consulting outside sources for reading responses specifically, as she believes that work should be your own reflections (I distinctly remember being penalized heavily for this T-T) I don't want to scare you, but I will honestly say that unless she's significantly different in ENE, you will need to prepare yourself for some frustration in her class. There's a big chance you will get scores you don't really like with no clear reason why, and no clear explanations on how you can improve. That being said, her grading was significantly kinder in the latter half of the sem, good enough for some people to get B+ (I don't know of anyone in two classes who got an A). My memory's not very clear, so there may be details I'm forgetting - but good luck,! /srs If we survived her, you will too 🙏more

Blunt Socratic recits; block’s least favorite

had her last sy and she was my entire block’s least favorite prof for a reason 😔 #traumatized teaching style/personality: - loves using the socratic method - we had recit every meeting, this was her way of remembering students, she’ll either ask you to read what’s in the ppt or ask about the text being presented - she’s very very blunt which makes her come across as masungit/terror prof (she kinda is tho 😭),, and because of this, a lot of my blockmates were very anxious to go to her class - lectures with her were very closed (this is what i disliked the most), basically her interpretation of the text is the only right interpretation, she didn’t consider other perspectives or opinions that our class shared - clearly has favorites in the class HAHAHA, unlike other reviews, her favorite in our class wasn’t the beadle so 😅 workload: - pop quizzes: either at the end or at the start of a module, make sure to know the titles, authors, and themes of every reading in each module - group presentation: we had one group presentation where each group had to creatively present a short story/poem then analyze it, get good group mates for this because they will save your life!!!!! - departmental midterm: all enlit 12 classes had the same exam format, just different poems per section - 2 short essays, 2 reading responses, 1 text analysis: basically we had to analyze a given text and answer guide questions about it,, she gives these either asynchronously or to be accomplished within the period - pair works: LOTS OF PAIR WORKS! one of the short essays were done by pair. also there were multiple class activities done by pair,, GET A GOOD PARTNER - synthesis paper: final paper wherein we had to compare and contrast 2 texts using the elements/lessons we learned throughout the sem grading: - VERY HARD A. our class’ grades were around c to b only - grades high if your interpretation/analysis of the text is the same as hers, grades low if not - honestly, her grading is so hard to predict that it’s like she asks a magic 8 ball what grade to give 😔✌️ tips: - RECITE!!!! she likes students who recite often and become memorable to her - read and do your research on the given texts before coming to class - avoid cutting her class. if you’re absent for an activity, it’s an automatic zero and she doesn’t give a make up activity - get a good pair/group, will definitely help you a lottt overall: a bad prof, run and loadrev if you can 🙏 if you can’t, oh well, at least your block has something to trauma bond over now 😭 wishing you luck, 🙏more

had her for enlit last sem, we had a few quizzes at the first leg of the sem and this was when she was actually teaching, but after the midterms (essay form, analyzing a poem) there were a lot of presentations and she didn’t teach that much. many of her requirements are written but its hard to understand what she wants because she always grades pretty low. you can check the rubrics through the syllabus for certain requirements but even with that, she still grades poorly. her finals is written and you can consult with her about your draft, and at the last 2(?) weeks of the sem we didn’t have classes anymore and you just had to submit the final paper through canvas. the good thing though is that many of my block mates still received a/b for enlit, but tbh i wouldn’t take her again if i had to retake enlit bc i did not like her teaching style at all. i didn’t learn much from her and we always had to do something for each class session. i guess what i liked about her is that she’s funny and pretty friendly, and she also has a unique accent.more

hahahahahaha good luck,! Had maam annette for enlit 12, all i can say is be prepared. Discussion are vv short, she expects you to read and understand the readings kaagad. Always be ready for pop quizzes, they are ALL recorded and graded. Hahahaha you can do it :)) I ended up getting a B+ naman despite having low scores, bawi nalang sa mga paper :))more

The only bright side in her class is having a traumatic bonding experience with your block that made us closer ❤️ All seriousness though my personal advice is to get on her good side. How? Always recite, even when it’s wrong—let her know your name through recitation. Don’t be afraid of her especially during recitation bc afaik she genuinely appreciates a student who often recites. Ofc, try your best to get to the point she might want (she can be picky) but in general trying to recite really gave me the edge. Once she can call you by your name without asking, then you have to maintain that image. Be active in class, consult with her esp on important papers! Best of luck to you and your block!more

Quiz plot/bold terms; recits aren't strict
for the quizzes, she usually asks the characters, setting, plot & summary for long stories and narratives. For other readings, it's usually the words in bold for identification with an explanation required so know the headings and read properly. For the recitation, just know the gist and important points then u'll be fine. She's not super strict w the recits. U can be wrong, but at least try lang.more

honestly? she’s not that bad. speaking as someone who got her for ENLIT 12, i was able to get an A in her class with decent effort. she’s very particular in what she wants from you, and sometimes she’s unclear in her instructions, but she’s always willing to give consultations if you’re brave enough to ask her for help. one of the most important things you do in her class is recite. constantly. raise your hand for recitation even if you’re unsure of the answer, because she really appreciates participation. once you get to the point where she can recognize and call you by your name, things get much easier.more

got a B+ with very minimal effort. (half assed the requirements ong) it’s either her way or no way at all. She has the tendency to abide by one particular understanding of the texts and readings that and is kind of close minded to any other ways you interpret it. she can be very motherly but don’t let that really sway you fully. She gave a handful of readings, but they aren’t that long naman tbh. but it’s just that there are a lot of group works talaga and sometimes those get you and pull your grade down. NEVER BE LATE NEVER EVER EVER. Quizzes are usually at the start of the class. But she was also very understanding w me when i informed her that my groupmates weren’t helping out (and i’m a bum alr at this point, ano pa kaya groupmates ko) and she really was lenient with me. Maybe i was lucky lang, but based on what i’ve seen, maybe loadrev out! (was also very ??? when i found out i got a b+)more

I heard of a beadle in another class getting an A, and I know multiple people in my class who got B+ (three school years ago). Definitely a lot of effort though.more

A-able for sure, I know at least 3 people in my class who got As, but with decent effort. It comes down to not getting discouraged when you inevitably fail the first few reqs and not getting annoyed at her vague instructions, consulting with her on what you did wrong, then applying that to the midterm and second half of the sem to pull up your grade. If you can put up with her sometimes grating comments and stay open minded to whatever she says without taking anything personally you can get good grades later on. Recite often even if you know you're wrong so that she can give better feedback during consults. She curves pretty hard if the class is doing badly so don't cut classes lalo na sa end of sem because she just gives out bonus points and activities. Loadrev if you have a way since her assignment expectations are pretty set and you're just trying to find what she wants to see, but if you can't loadrev, she's not that bad as long as you recite, consult, and don't get discouraged.more

i took her as an english elective last sem but I got a B+ with low effort (im an athlete + i did reqs and org pubmats during her class so when i say low i mean LOWWW) ! she prefers what id call "default" views on the readings we had, because the only time i got a low score in a paper was when i assigned a character an incorrect archetype or role (I didn't consult with her on that paper na cus i saw the feedback late ) main tip is always be one reading ahead of the syllabus. in me and my friend's experience, miss usually assigns the bulkier readings at the start of the sem (books, poems, modules) so it gets easier past the second half (news videos/articles/movies/commercials) get competent groupmates, memorize what you say during reportings, and try to consult with her face-to-face so that she remembers you not just by name 😌more

Took her in freshie year but not for ENE, we had her for Enlit 12. I would drive to school without a seatbelt on, in hopes that I would crash and die before I even arrive to her class. That woman is probably one of the most temperamental and most condescending profs I've ever had. She's so rigid about interpretation and you're practically left to guess what she wants to hear from you, because her interpretation and whatever answer she has in mind is the only correct one lol. Idk if these are isolated cases, but she also likes humiliating students. She will call random people to recite and proceed to berate them when she isn't satisfied with their answer. Sounds normal enough, but I remember there was this one time that it was raining really hard and this girl from my class who probably had no umbrella came in soaked. Soriano called on her as she was settling in and proceeded to grill her in front of the whole class about the last assigned reading. Good luck.more

Idk how she is for ENLIT or purp comm but i had her for ENE and she's rly chill except for her [pop] quizzes and readings (super long). Pros: -she lets u choose groupmates (get good ones since theres a lot of pairwork and groupwork) -she gives time for u to work on ur tasks during class hours -she ends the onsite sessions early w a lot of async work towards the end of the sem *i think she got lazy towards the end and js graded everyone perfect for the synthesis paper (10% of the grade) *she probably curves cuz i flopped all the quizzes but still got an A! Cons: -long readings -pop quizzes/recitation -can be intimidating sometimesmore

Recite, consult, and explain your papers fully
My personal tip is to become her fave by reciting and being very engaging in class (before during and after) and ask to consult. CONSULT CONSULT AND CONSULT. I was so nice to the point that my consultations were so detailed compared to my blockmates that had really vague comments about their papers. +++ in papers make sure to thoroughly explain your points and she asks you to be concise but don’t let that stop you from fully explaining your points. You don’t need flowery or deep words!! Recite and make a good impressionmore
