His selection of readings is honestly the best. He’s actually a chill prof in a sense na messenger lang yung form of communication niyo as a class and you can just randomly message and ask for book recommendations.
My tip: Recite in his class! He appreciates even basic answers SO LONG AS ITS A THOUGHTFUL BASIC ANSWER. Like you don’t have to quote classical book authors in your answers when you recite. If you have a realization about how the text you’re reading connects to a relevant real life event for example, feel free to share!! He loves those kinds of insightful ideas.
MAIN POINT: He loves when students can connect the concepts he teaches to events outside of the classroom. Example: Connect how the text is a reflection of real-life discrimination against homeless people for instance.
Workload wise: You take Perusall exams (he was my only online class when every subject has transitioned to onsite na, idk if it’s still the same next sem) and they’re quite subjective. Meaning, you will be graded based on how well you understood the meaning and intention of the text ++ how you used the concepts in class in analyzing the text. There’s no objectively “correct” answer in his exam (very rarely there is since it is an English course) but what will be tested is your critical thinking skills
Grading: A-able; B+ with effort! I got an A sa kanya because I actually liked reading about his lessons and modules and the readings sa exams were super interesting. As in this is the subject where it feels natural to get an A because you actually give a shit about the class and you’re motivated to do good.

We had him for ENE 13.06i, and not IS 145; but to echo what the other comments are saying, Sir's lectures are very insightful and thought-provoking. Even with common stories (ex. The Tell-tale Heart), Sir is able to offer a different perspective and make you think about the text, and how you engage with stories in general, in ways you didn't before.
That said, he has very high standards for grading. Our major assessments were also Perusall annotations (like the other comments here), and you can probably expect low scores for your first few assessments until you get the hang of it. Sir really wants to see strong, detailed analysis, with no jumps in logic. It will be a bit difficult to get what he wants at first, but I think it's something you can grasp when you see his feedback on your first few assessments.
He gave us a lot of discussion boards for bonus points (I don't think he released his grades here, if any, but the better the quality and quantity, the higher your chances of getting some kind of bonus). I guess you can lump recitation here as well: I don't think it's officially graded (or at least, not a big part of the grade), but reciting well and often can help pull up your grade at the end of the semester.

sir’s way of assessing u is through perusall tests! we had 2/3 pop quizzes lang iirc then the rest of our grades came from the scores of our 4/5 perusall tests (im sorry i forgot if 4 ba yun in total or 5) - he gave one after we finished a module
his readings & the other materials that he made us watch weren’t that hard to digest naman so watch and read them na before ur meeting and then listen in class because sir discusses the important ones further (he had optional readings too)
also, sir knows his stuff talaga ~ like what the others said, he’s the goat! when he teaches, he communicates… he engages with us… he connects, kaya i really learned in this class …
yung mga tinuturo ni sir, it’s not just the by the book stuff… he’s not spewing bs either… his words are legit and you’ll learn so much more about literature & life to the point na when the class ended nga, i was really sad kasi this ene class was so good!!
if ur up for a good challenge and u want ur life to change, take him! no regrets 💙more

OH and at the beginning of class he asks everyone to recap what was previously discussed. like what happened during the parodos, stasimon (components of a play) etc so make sure you take notes on what happened in each part and recite so he can like u lolmore

no, he's not strict on recits. if he calls on someone it's to refresh the class's memory or ask for your opinion. he's stricter on short objective type quizzes (the answers are easy and one-word/line mostly) where you have to follow his instructions under a time crunch.more

Honestly can vouch! He was one of my favorite profs but definitely not an easy a :’)) don’t take him if you aren’t a diligent reader (his instructions are very specific but you’ll get the hang of it!) and if you can’t handle a class that will need a bit of effort.
As someone who loves reading in general, I enjoyed all the stuff he’d assign us. I really did learn so much from him, would take him again 100% HE’S THE BEST ISTGmore

Sir's final exam should be more or less similar to the Perusall exams throughout the semester. As you'll see from those exams, Sir is really focused on the logic and analysis in your annotations - he wants to see you talk about the deeper meaning of the text and its construction, without jumps in logic. If I remember correctly, you'll have 3 hours, so I recommend to submit at least a few annotations early. He tends to like good ones, but naturally it gets harder to do so later in the exam when more annotations are in. He typically gives comments/likes for early annotations which you can use to help guide your work. Go over the concepts from his class, and more importantly, what effect does it have when it's used in the text? Does it reveal or conceal information (ex. first-person POV vs. third-person POV), does it create a certain "sound" (ex. some forms of alliteration creating a smooth sound), etc. And most importantly, what effect does it have on your reading experience or the meaning of the text? His exams aren't easy, but they're passable if you look at the previous feedback and know how to apply the lessons to the text. Good luck,!more

He’s one of the best profs this university has to offer. His classes are never tedious, and you always leave having learned something new. If you’re usually too shy to recite during class, I promise you’ll be voluntarily raising your hand eventually. Avoid him, though, if you hate annotating/Perusall! If you enjoy that sort of stuff, he’s great. Plus, he gives you a chance to improve your grade with the five billion discussion boards on Canvas. For the intimidated, it is possible to get an A in his class just from answering most/all of these.more

so late, but i took sir sunico’s class online during the pandemic bc it was so highly reviewed and still exceeded all my expectations! (for more context this is coming from a student whose comfort subject was always English/lit but wanted something challenging)
to this day i use what we applied in class to dissect the articles, media, and stories i encounter on social media, in books and of course with people. it was one of the only classes I looked forward to tbh. every session was so full of life; very open and insightful discussion, intriguing readings, and really profound teachings from sir. also participation is a dealbreaker for your grade (esp if you’re between two letters) which scared me bc I’m not really the reciting type, but sir welcomes all answers and develops your insights through the discussion so it was really fun!
most of it has already been said, so I’ll just add that it really changed the way i analyze literature, narratives, and language. and taught me how to write in clear, concise, non-flowery sentences HAHAHmore

HSHASHA take him if u want to learn A LOT. intimidating at first but eventually, i just really loved attending his classes because of his insights. the class didn't feel like a "burden". helped me find my love for literature and reading again.
in terms of workload, last sem we had purely online classes. there were only 3 perusall quizzes which lasted 3 hrs, 4 pts each. he is meticulous with grammar and sentence construction for those. you can answer the canvas DBs to pull up your grades. he would also appreciate it if you always attend his classes and recite (more on personal insights and reflection). we didn't really have a lot of readings aside from the quizzes.
he grades fairly, but it does take time to practice how to frame your answers well. A-able with effort 🙂 would take his class again if i had the chance! <33more

Very interesting prof, offers insights you won't hear anywhere else. Grading can be kinda tough in that it takes a couple of assessments to figure out what he likes, but you can get the hang of it with effort, and really pull your grade up with optional discussion boards. Had him for my last elective. At first he was pretty intimidating. If you're expecting a pretty chill class, then you are not in the right class. But, i can say that he made Great Books really interesting and is really passionate about it. He is also generous with materials and readings so everything is all up to you to study and understand before the class proper so you have a better grasp of the piece. During our assessments, He doesn't like students who makes lengthy explanations. He is also generous with points if he sees your point.
From start to mid terms, personally, I had a pretty hard time with his class because I did not have enough prior knowledge on the subject. But, he was kind enough to give clarifications even after our class. He is kind and generous but is strict during class and assessment.
Overall, a very commendable class if you want to get the most out of what you are paying for your education. 10/10 would recommend!more
