copying my review from another post! had sir yabs for theo 11 & is definitely one of my favorite profs! 🤗 he only comes to class with a whiteboard marker for discussion yet i remember everything from his subject cover to cover because he definitely knows his stuff enough to teach it in a way that’s easily digestible. strictly no phones in class! but laptops/gadgets are allowed : ) read his reading/s before every lesson! other than the fact that they’re interesting, sometimes he gives graded short essay quizzes at the start of class and they ultimately supply the lesson — hence why it’s also very easily digestible. we were allowed index cards for our oral midterm & were given the thesis statements beforehand . based on our grades , he’s meticulous that you cover everything important about a certain topic , so i suggest take notes or review how he concept maps the topics so you don’t forget! not sure if anyone finished with an A in my class but i finished with a B+ w effort! he grades on a 4-point scale (uses decimals tho) so percentage-wise it’s a bit harsh , but i feel like i might have pulled it to an A if my papers were equally personal anecdote-y AND explicitly lesson-integrated/excerpted from the readings . sir was overall one of my favorite classes because it just felt like one big chill and casual conversation where you had time to discuss with your seatmates your thoughts and questions then share them to sir and he’ll bounce right off. he has such an interesting background & is very artistically-inclined (conversations sometimes carried over to movies, music, poetry, painting) and it’s what ultimately made the class much more full to me. would def take a class under sir yabs again if given the chance!more

To elaborate, I found the class material very easy and almost preaching to the choir b/c I already had a background in feminist and queer theology. But you'll really learn a lot if you don't know anything about more unconventional and marginalised embodied approaches to theology, which is worth it. Put a lot of effort into the class requirements—they're not heavy but do require you to really be reflective and apply the lessons learned in class! Bonus points if you can articulate some insights on gendered, classed, or just generally embodied experience through a theological lens and bring a new experience/idea to the table. If you do seem like you've learned, you'll definitely do finemore

agree. i put my heart and soul into every paper, yet i always got a grade lower than expected. i got an A in every language-related course (fili, en), theo, and philo class, but i could not break yabut’s standards for theo 13. i would not deny his great teaching style tho. one of the best pedagogies in ateneo, not just in the theo department. if you’re grade-conscious, i would highly suggest taking a different prof. TLDR Hard and gut-wrenching B+more

VOUCH!! he’s actually pretty lenient with grading tbh, i expected way lower than what i actually got sa mga tests niya but i got… an okay score? 😭 ++ the tests are for each module, after every reading. tho if you want to get full marks sa test niya, you really have to break down the salient points and understand (also throw in your own interpretation para matuwa siya). he’s also very flexible with deadlines and extensions. don’t be afraid to ask lang if youre his beadlemore

hi I was his beadle back in 2023 for Theo 11 in my freshie year hahalots of readings (he dgaf about how long they were, we had to print every single one of them)he likes mindmapsdon’t piss him off unless you want gadgets to be banned for the whole class. not everyone in our class had a printed version of the reading so 3/4 of us got kicked out and got a cut even if we came to classwould make a cool batchmate but would def hate him as a prof lol. maybe, but it was a hard B/B+ because he wanted so much things but had such low word count; trust us we tried condensing it to the max and it was still over word count. orals were kaya naman you were allowed index cards but just a certain size and sometimes he guides you to the answer but that’s just if you try to get to the first step on your ownif there’s an option to not take him don’t lol but you won’t die fr if you have him he’s coolmore

it’s definitely A-able if you actually read and engage with the discussions during class. you don’t even need to read all readings, but mostly the ones he mentions in class. don’t expect to get an A if you don’t put in any effort. for his class you need like average amount of effort to get an A. being locked in and listening is what got me that A. his lectures are super interesting and fun. he is also kind. he is progressive, so that’s a plus. his workload is also not heavy. i had him last sem and we didn’t have any quizzes. we had papers and a midterm orals. make sure to get good group mates for the final paper. papers can be tricky but he likes it when you add your own insights, additional research outside of the readings, and engaging (not just agreeing but also questioning or challenging) with the ideas of the reading. be thorough with the orals and make sure you know the topics by heart sir yabut is my goat fr 🙏🏻 i learned a lot from himmore

Wala namang quizzes, he’s lenient about attendance (take it from me i was always late / max cut HAJSBHA) and even lets u sit in a diff sched if you have a sched conflict Mabait siya, cheery, and his pov was very genderqueer which i appreciated a lot for the course. he made me want to take gender studies as a minor <3 i <3 yabut awesome prof! i <3 all my outputs for his class!!more

Love the prof! Can only vouch! Most open minded theo prof you will find !! Most of the time he grades out of 4 so even a 3/4 if you done the task correctly might be a bit low in a % scale, but its justifiable naman. If you do all your tasks then you'll get a stable B!! More importantly you can ask the most deep philosophical questions about God and the world and he will try to answer them. The environment to truely question the fundamentals of theo is there. (Had him for Theo 11) Best class of the sem, made me question my own standing of religion and the world. No question was called stupid or out of place. Go lang!! Readings are fine, just gotta take the time to read them. After that you will always discuss them in class, so it was never about pure memorization, more about grasping the concepts. He'll ask in class what you thought of it, if you a agree or not. I'm not sure but I think he told us that he hasn't taught Theo 13 yet, so u wouldn't find anything on that subject, and that he'll see what he can do. (Esp. since it is the marriage one and he's not conservative xD ) I'd take his course again anytime!!more

if you want to maintain your grades at a high level, then i suggest that you go find a better prof. yabut gives very low grades even if you accomplish all of his tasks on time with quality work, actively participate during class, and even volunteer as a beadle. ps: this is based on personal experience. so again, i suggest that you go find a better prof. i’m sure there are other profs available that give more reasonable grades. anyways, goodluck!more

We had 4 quizzes regarding readings he post in Canvas. Ngl, if you want to get a 4/4 sa quiz niya, you better read, understand, and remember yung first part of the reading and salient points para hindi ka mahirapan. Interesting discussions and engaging way of teaching. I like his drawings sa blackboard kasi mas naaalala ko yun kesa sa bulleted ppts ng profs. 🤕 Anyway, other reqs we have for this course are the faith narrative assessment, reflection papers, and oral exams. Workload-wise, not that heavy. You just got to give your best 🙏 Very chill prof. Relates his lessons to modern real world scenarios. I recommend profs like I am recommending a product in the orange app, so I give him 5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️more

very chill prof, he didn’t take attendance for our class halfway through first sem (but don’t keep cutting cause he will call it out) readings are somewhat complicated for the first part, but he MIGHT give you easier ones depending on how the class understands the lessons does mini recaps of previous lessons before each class + likes to start with a bit of quiet time so people can relax. he’s also considerate of you come from a far building, he’ll give grace periods nmn his quizzes are all over 4, so just make sure to study the readings very well. HE SENDS READINGS LATE, so just be aware of that. Late = a day before class through canvas email/inbox tip: if you hate taking notes, get a friend who writes things down for youmore

For THEO 13, my class standing was technically an F (as in, far from a D) but I ended with a C. Participated a lot in class and I communicated certain personal issues in the middle of the sem, so I think he’s very considerate and appreciates when you’re active in discussions.
