hi! took miss jane last sem for csp 11. she has a rep for being a terror prof but honestly she's one of the most understanding and fun profs to pick for flc. absolutely loved her class!! one thing that isn't mentioned as much here is how the class is divided into two -- beginners and people with background. this means that students who used to go to a chinese school/spoke chinese growing up are graded separate from beginners. this made it easy for my friends and i to catch up in class since we were given different assessments from those who already spoke chinese fluently. this also means that if you came from a chinese school and you're aiming for an easy no-effort A in flc, don't take her class
she's heavy on recitation which is usually by alphabetical order, and this happens every session so you get to practice speaking chinese on the spot. however, if you don't get it the first time, she'll help you get the correct answer naman and always gives chances to make up for it. i recommend grinding out her recitation though, kasi she gives +15 sa finals to the person with the highest combined recitation points in the semester. her workload is very light, one to two assessments per month, some of them group work pa. her classes tend to be small. she WILL make you interact with each other for conversation practice, so by the end of the class we felt like a little community lol. she -can- be fast sometimes, but most of her lessons are based from the canvas modules naman and you can ask her questions in class anytime.
she doesn't hand out perfect scores. in fact in most of our assessments no one got a perfect score! but as long as you recite, study, and pass the assessments, you'll be fine. her class is a haven if you're really into chinese culture and language because you WILL be immersed in the subject. if you want to learn how to -actually- speak chinese, pick miss jane. if you want an easy A, pick other profs. planning to take her again next sem!! A-able with effort definitelymore

Took her for CSP 11 and I hope to take her again for future CSP courses! This review is based on my experience as a student with no background with the language.
- Very nice person. She understands that most of those taking her class will have no background in the language so she takes the time in the first week to gauge the classes' understanding.
- Assessments are easy. We only had one written assessment and everything else was done in Canvas. Maybe we're special but we didn't have any oral exams but we did have sessions where we practiced speaking to another classmate.
- She had my class on a Hybrid setup. Everything she teaches will be on the modules she provides and/or the presentations she uses during online sessions. She also shares zoom recordings.
- Her main way of teaching is repetition by recitation. Don't be afraid if she calls you and you butcher tones/pronounciations/grammar. She doesn't expect you to get it all on one go so she does callbacks and has you repeat words/phrases over and over.
- She gives a lot of opportunities to gain bonus points. From character games to a dice game, she gives out bonuses like candy diba
- Granted, the way she teaches sometimes can be "janky" as she does a lot of adjustments on the go as well as draw with a mouse on the presentation; but it worked for us and she answers any question you may have for her.
Overall, great teacher for the class and one of the highlights of my semester!more

You will pass so long as you put in the effort to accomplish all her assessments.
But I will warn you now. You must have the self-discipline to study on your own. Laoshi expects too much from your previous CSP 11 professors and fails to properly bridge the gap between CSP 11 and CSP 12. Studying a language is cumulative after all so this became quite the challenge. Laoshi tries her best to accommodate but I feel that this is one of those courses where you have to pour in more time outside the classroom than expected due to how disconnected the CSP language courses are.
As mentioned in another comment, she is hard to contact via email. Best course of action is to ask the beadle to relay your question (or become the beadle yourself). In my case, I was the beadle. Many of her assessments came with unclear instructions which of course prompted me to forward questions from the class. I'm not sure if this built hostility on her end, but towards the end of the semester I received a hostile message from her (which she immediately deleted), and it permanently left a bad taste in my mouth afterwards. Being a beadle for her was quite the challenge (if you're the proactive type of beadle like I am).
Also. For your final written assessment, you may request for bonus questions. I remember the majority of my class being unable to answer most of the questions (for CSP 12 it's in pinyin & hanzi, for CSP 13 it's only hanzi).more

More on Jane laoshi as a prof though, she expects recitations in class. She cold calls so best to be prepared in whatever way you can. Her outputs are light (about 4 assessments iirc) with the final output being a video (she calls it the oral exam) and a written test. She grades generously naman, and we suspect that she curves. She doesn't respond to emails much, so it's best to ask whatever you want to ask during class hours (whether online or onsite).more

LUCG extra work was optional, one assignment
OH! She copy pasted the assignment from 2024! (Attached ss below, word for word pa nga) Yeah I remember the LUCG, it was a by choice thing for those with background (not required if you're not confident with your Mandarin YET but iirc we were encouraged by Laoshi because some people in our class came from Chinese schools talaga). Let me emphasize that it's by choice talaga, so if you aren't confident in your Mandarin just don't join or be extra transparent with Laoshi.
Upon checking my canvas din, only one assignment was assigned to the LUCG group. After that one assignment, we just got the same assignment as everybody else. Keep in mind though that this was 2024!
As for the assessments, 3 were individual (more focused on the writing aspect) and 1 was group. She chooses your group for you.

i was a little nervous at first when i started taking her for chinese 1 since i'd heard mixed reviews on her, but she's actually super fun! she knows how to get the class working together well and her teaching style is very funny and engaging, the class really felt like a community by the end of it. she can be a bit fast paced with her lessons at times, but her reqs are generally pretty chill (like 1 take-home "informal assessment" per month or so, the format of the assessments vary?) and i never felt overloaded by the amount of work. wouldn't exactly say she's an easy A/B+ since she doesn't necessarily grade high, but she doesn't grade super low either and if you're looking for a chinese prof whose lectures will actually hold your interest i would recommend her!more

Hi! Took Lao Shi in 2024, and if i recall correctly we did have to learn some characters. She had a worksheet wherein the repetition/writing of the characters was required but it was take home and there was a guide. For the final exams though, I believe we just had to recognize what each character meant. I would say her class was really more about memorizing the characters - and then understanding and writing basic pinyin (and learning the tone most especially).more

As someone who already passed HSK4 and took CSP12, there is no difference in assessments with laoshi. She won't even call u in class unless others don't know the answer. Just make sure you respond to her when she actually calls you. For CSP 11, she separates you if you say you have a good background in mandarin, but for CSP 12, she doesn't. Maybe she won't be as lenient in grading your pronunciation if you have background, but that's pretty much it. During the oral exam, I heard she made those who are really good try a harder one but those who have just a little background still had the same exam as those without.more

She’s a very tita vibes prof HAHA. She understands how hard it is to learn mandarin so she’s very empathetic to students who struggle over time. We always had recitation during every session so I’d say you really have to take comprehensive notes so you can get those bonus points which will help SO MUCH in the final exam which was so 💀💀💀
In terms of assessments, we didn’t have onsite tests, but rather group presentations, take home writing tasks, video group orals and some asynch quizzes!! Our only test was the final exam which was INSANE, but I feel like that was mostly a me problem for not studying enough 😅
Definitely an A able class as long as you put effort in notes and listening in lectures since most tasks are done asynchronously so you are free to learn on your own!
I’d say the only thing about her is she can be fast paced at times in lectures so it can be hard to follow what she’s saying, but overall I think a really solid and okay prof!! Not a terror like what others say imo 🥹more

Took Jane 老师 last sem. Do not recommend if you have a Chinese background but are not very good at Chinese or if you have a heavy schedule. The classes themselves were enjoyable (good vibes ❤️), but the workload can be a lot. Aside from the requirements of the more advanced class (LUCG), you still have to participate in some requirements of the basic class. I had to film a video (15-20 lines per person) for both classes. A big obstacle in this is finding a schedule, as in LUCG you won't necessarily come from the same CSP 11 section, and people come from different courses and year levels.more

Took her when things were still online and I think she’s ok. I have a strong chinese background so this review may not encompass the experience of everyone but here’s my take.
Teaching wise, I like how she lets u practice in class so u rlly know how to kinda speak chinese. Wid dat however, this means that u always have to practice so u’s be prepared for her class and that may not be favorable to everyone.
Assessment wise, there’s like 1 written and 2 orals during my time. The written test back then was rearranging sentences, translating things to Chinese, matching wuts wut etc. Ur usually Chinese test in high school. For advance its just more words, and I think we all use to dat.
Relationship wid student wise she may not be the best here. Although she open to extensions and stuff like that she’s not the most lenient abt it.
OVERALL it all boils down to will I take her again? To me yes but I understand why some ppl wouldn’t bec she’s not the type to teach u Chinese from the fundamentals wid just the right amount of pacing.more

Lectures are a must attend, and she's super heavy on recitation as a means of teaching (though not graded). Key thing though: It's pretty hard to keep up when you fall behind in lectures so I suggest you study at home and keep pace, but she's not terror at all. She grades pretty kindly, I think A is only possible from her if you effectively do memorization for both her Pinyin and Character sheets. Never heard of an A from my peers but mostly B-B+, occasional C-C+ if you don’t do too well. For teaching style and requirements just be weary cause she can be a bit fast, shes very open to questions. Most of her assignments are written and recorded orals, regardless of what you say she checks for effort so try not to read during recorded orals. She permits the use of AI as a supplement, if you are too blatantly using AI just to cruise through it won’t help you at all with her classmore
