Take Chiang for CSP 11 if you want an interactive beginner Mandarin room, can handle frequent recitation, and will do a weekly oral recording. One student already calls the A easy and assessments basic; the other is still enrolled and will not lock a letter. Lean away if oral recitation is a hard stop. Fun pop-culture CSP 11, patient with no Chinese

Hello, anon! I just had Sir Chiang for CSP 11 last semester, and I'd say his class is pretty fun! A lot of Sir's activities are oriented towards pop culture (ex. reciting lines from Chinese movies/dramas/songs, doing the Chinese fruit/vegetable filter on Tiktok, etc.), and the others are fairly simple, I'd say (ex. reciting Chinese numbers, holding simple conversations in Mandarin with a classmate, etc.). If you were able to find old reviews, his finals is still playing Among Us in Chinese - he prepares a GDoc of useful terms (i.e. colors and locations) that you can refer to during the exam. In class, I'd say Sir is very patient, especially with students who don't have Chinese background. He doesn't monitor attendance, so you're free to cut as you please (especially if you have background in Chinese) so long as you show up for the finals. That said, keep in mind that we often have short activities during class hours that you'd have to catch up on if you cut, so it may be good to ask people in the class what they did for the day if you cut. All in all, I'd say Sir's activities are very manageable - typically you just need to follow what you did in class, with some minor tweaks if you're up for it. So long as you submit everything on time, I think you should be fine. The only thing I'd caution is that Sir starts with his activities pretty early in the semester, so you may have to do some additional practice for Pinyin if you're not familiar with it yet. All in all, I'd say it's a very A-able and fun class! Good luck,!more

hello! i can’t vouch if he’s a-able or b-able or whatnot since i am still currently his student for CSP 11 (hello laoshi if you see this HAHAHA)
what i can vouch for is that learning chinese with him is fun! very interactive class sessions since he is young. you won’t feel the burden of his class unless you don’t listen at all. he has recitations all the time especially if you have no chinese background. although he will help you through your recitations if he sees that you struggle in answering.
workload is a weekly oral recording of a script (the scripts are fun & very pop culture/memes) there are no quizzes unless your class wants one & the main basis of your grade would really be orally done. (there is no written quiz for this subject) the final also would be either a video, an oral presentation, or a game play (speaking in chinese).
overall, i recommend him! he’s great & im glad i accidentally got into his class instead of my original CSP 11 teacher! 😁more

hi! currently having him for intercession and hes super chill and fun! assignments are very beginner friendly and fun (chinese fruits tiktok filter, recreating a chinese meme, scavenger hunt, etc)
hes very patient if you're a beginner, and will gladly give you extra help if he knows you're having some difficulty :D
not sure how it is for normal semesters but in our intercession class as long as you're done with your work he also is just very fun to be around, he plays roblox and plays while we're doing our work and you can even play with him when you're finished HAHAHAH
even if intercession is fast paced and very crammed, some of our class mentioned it was going a bit fast for them and he made sure to slow it down regardless of the time constraints :) very considerate in making sure you learn Chinese itself hehe
overall amazing prof and i look forward to his class everyday because he manages to incorporate a lot of recent trends into his activitiesmore

sir chiang is the best! during introductions, i told him i came from a chi jhs and he said he knew some people who graduated from there 🤣since the lessons are for absolute beginners, your chi background will surely benefit you because you prolly alr know the lessons! overall, sir’s so chill and makes the class so fun by incorporating roblox and amongus so we get to practice speaking in chinese 🤣more

hi!! currently also his student in CSP 11, so can’t vouch if he’s a- able or what not, but agree with what the other commenter said !! he really wants you to learn conversational Chinese which is why there aren’t really any written quizzes. He’s very understanding of the class’ needs and will usually agree to what the class requests (e.g. group meeting time since our final was a video na groupwork) (laoshi is also a very quick responder) We’ve only had a few written works, and we usually do them in class since it’s on the current lesson lang^
though he wasn’t originally supposed to be our teacher, i’m glad that he was since he really is beginner-friendly & understanding of his students !!more

Hi anon, had Sir Chiang for CSP11 also last sem!
His activities often involve splitting the class into small groups, they're fairly simple (e.g. writing down the pin yin for words he reads out loud, going around practicing small talk w/ classmates, etc.) I'd say it's A-able even without background knowledge of Mandarin.
Just make sure to review the gdoc of terms before the Among Us finals 🫶🏻

His discussions and assessments are full of pop culture references - for example, we had to try a Chinese Tiktok filter, recite a Chinese rap song, etc. Like in previous years, his final exam is playing Among Us in Chinese - and he makes a GDoc of terms you can refer to as you play, so you should be okay so long as you skim through it before the exam.
