Self-study heavy, read the book to survive

we had her (PSYC 23) for the first transition sem onsite! it was mostly self-study and student reports, so if you want to survive you really need to read through the book. PROS: - she integrates real-life application and field experience into her lessons. - a free digital copy of the book is provided. - quizzes are relatively short (20 items, 25 mins). - slightly (emphasis on slightly) flexible with deadlines. the best you can get is moving it ~2 days, ONLY with a strong enough reason. she’ll often reject time adjustments though. CONS: - heavy workload, esp due to the length of readings you mostly have to self-study. she’ll give a summary of the module during onsite sessions, but it’s not very comprehensive compared to the readings and the amount of detail you must know to even stand a chance at passing the quizzes. - (from our experience) she never gives perfect scores, even if there’s nothing wrong with your work. there were group consultations where we asked what we could improve since we had gotten one point less than a perfect score for each rubric. she couldn’t answer (she even started the consultation saying our work was good already and didn’t need major revisions) and spent a few seconds thinking of something to justify the lost points before picking at a small detail just to say something. - unclear expectations and standards, despite having a rubric (see above). - since tasks aren’t worth many items, each point away takes a large blow on the grade. - all quizzes are online with questions viewed one at a time. you’re not allowed to skip any or go back to review. addtl details: - deadlines (both activities and quizzes) are always online due at 6pm, so time management is important especially if you’re traveling home from afternoon onsite class. - PICK A GOOD GROUP. group outputs and reports have a huge bearing on grades. - CONSIDER: our group consistently got the highest scores in all outputs, but it was still a very hard B+. not worth the workload and stress, would not take again. cc:more

Accommodating but passive-aggressive; won't budge on deadlines
hi! 1. she’s accommodating in the sense that she encourages questions and always entertains these to the best of her knowledge, even if these may stray a bit from the topic (as long as it’s psych-related). i think she tries to be kind, but tbh a lot of us found it passive-aggressive at times:c this also ties in with the fact that she mostly doesn’t like budging on deadlines or assessment formats despite the entire class having a reason for asking (e.g., she denied our request of changing the settings to be allowed to return to previous quiz questions to review). definitely was never outright hostile or a stereotypical “terror,” though. she also asked us how she could improve at the end of the course (although based on her responses, she won’t be taking all our suggestions because she “has a reason for keeping it that way”). i don’t have experience asking her about personal challenges or accomodations, so i can’t accurately answer your last question. 2. i don’t have enough info to speak on the class average, but i would estimate B to B+. 3. stay if you don’t mind self-study and class presentations + are not aiming for an A. personally, i don’t think it’s enough of a struggle to go through the hassle of load rev if ever you do end up in her class. it was manageable, just don’t expect that effort = high grades:”). tips to survive: - learn how to write clearly. be straight to the point and show how each idea relates to the others. don’t add unnecessary details for the sake of making it longer. - if she asks you to propose a project, make sure it’s feasible and don’t overcomplicate it. simple is good, just make sure you’re able to anchor it on the psych concepts. - as much as possible, go further than book definitions and show her you understand how to apply concepts in the real world. - attend class. she takes attendance and remembers people who cut / are often late. hope these help! good luck if you end up taking her class~more

hi! had ms. acosta for both theories and cogpsy. b+/a-able with effort. but she's okay as a prof. agree ako sa ibang commenters; she's not the best. her onsite lectures are simplified regurgitations of the book / readings. the small amount of info on her slides for each module is disproportionate to the complexity of her exams. you're better off studying with the references she requires for the class because her slides alone are unreliable to pass the long tests. long tests in cogpsy for us were mainly multiple choice, but other times had true or false and fill in the blanks. in terms of moving deadlines for reqs, she can be lenient, but it's a hit or a miss. she cold calls based on index cards at times for sharing after dyad or triad discussions when she wants new people she hasn't heard from yet. but recitation is not always a big thing in her class. her teaching feels shallow more often than not to me. the examples and information she uses, like i mentioned, is always just based on the book / references she depends on. a lot of the time, her answer is "i don't know" when we ask questions that are beyond the coverage of book / source. in my class specifically, i saw how she tended to become passive aggressive to students who ask questions, when really, they genuinely just want to learn or catch up. her responses were off-putting and discouraged several of us to ask even if she allots a few minutes between discussions for questions. be sure to keep track of your attendance because she won't let you know how many cuts you have. she expects you to do that on your own. also, no gadgets in class unless needed for an activity. good luck,!more

ermmm baka outdated review na cos i had her like 4 semesters ago.. n i had her twice n didnt like her the second time around HAHSHAHA walang kwenta yung libro before and imo mas okay sa discussion? But then again during my time the best u could get is B+ sa assessments n she didnt curvemore

i agree with everything that was said! especially the passive agressive because i experienced it firsthand 😭 overall, she’s my least liked prof from psych so far HAHAHA she’s not the worst but there are way better profs who can teach the class better. you will survive but with effort.more

she’s the only psych prof i dislike… 😭 we took her for cog psy nung 2021, and she was p passive-aggressive (check na lang comment sa taas HAHAHA) other than her attitude, she also grades pretty low??? tas sometimes the scores are all the same and walang feedback so di namin alam saan nanggaling:(( kung meron man, theyre quite vague. i rlly wouldnt recommend her huhu i suggest to get other profs if u can? but try checking more recent reviews din baka nagbago siya HHAHAHAHAmore

napakakupal. Example: During a consultation, she asked me a question. I answered. She cut me off midway. She paused briefly so I started speaking again. She sternly said, “Don’t interrupt me.” It’s not even about her grading system or assessments or teaching style anymore. The personality and attitude of the prof made a lot of us lose motivation to attend synchs and participate. Because few people were attending synchs out of anxiety of interacting with her, she started calling on people to recite. If you can handle this type of prof, then go for it. She curved our grade. Love and miss her 🥹 By the end of our three-peat semesters with her, she became a very supportive presence in our college life HAHA she really listened to our feedback in the previous semester and adapted her teaching style accordingly. She's really approachable and open for consultations, even if it's unrelated to the course matter (as someone who consulted with her about my professional career HAHA). Recommend her talaga for Psyc Assessment! She teaches with examples derived directly from her experience in administering assessments as a clinical psychologist. She also gives timely feedback and even suggestions on how to phrase your ideas in the report more clearly. She also explains abstract concepts really well and suggest ideas you can connect together! I think I improved in writing reports and papers in general because of her feedback HAHA To update my previous comment here: Do not run away lol HAHA her classes were still very much challenging (A/B+ with much effort, lalo na if retained ang comprehensive exam for PsychAss 😭), but overall my experience with her in three semesters has been more positive than negative, especially towards the latter end because she really became a better prof!more

I don't know about her in Psyc 24 but I have her as my prof for cog psycGives ppts naman and is fun in class but the long tests... No . It's composed of multiple choice + an essay/identification/fill in the blanks. The test makes you think you understand her lessons but when you get your results back you cry and then find out that almost everyone is going through this as well. Her passing is 70% in long tests iirc, and the class average for her first test was around 65% so do what you want with that info During consultation with her, she's pretty scary and on top of that, in the next consultations she will ask you why your group did something that she herself suggested?? Idk why she's confusing like that Another important thing is that she doesn't allow gadgets in our class, and that includes using your phone to read your script when doing presentations so make sure to print them!!!more

Had her class last sem (mass promotion) so can’t say if she curves or if A-able. Discussion-wise, her ppts are v wordy pero she discusses well naman and starts the class with a meme, but not the best at engaging attention thus its v easy to get distracted. Readings are lengthy, and expect a quiz alternately after every new reading. Quizzes are cumulative with 10 pts for each one. It would be hard if you did not read the readings or if you did not understood it well. Me and my friends would often get less than 5 out of 10 in most quizzes lmao. Overall experience is pwede na I guess, but personally I did not enjoy her class. Though I can’t speak for the whole experience since we didn’t have a chance to finish the sem.more

agree with the previous comments. she's okay, but there are other better profs out there to teach cog psy. not the most life changing prof. you'll learn a lot more on your own. ma'am's pretty passive-aggressive for some reason. she's nice naman but she really has those moments. i had her for cog psy while my friend had her for theories. common denominator? we both struggled with her exams because her lectures ≠ test content. imo the class mean was usually 35 while the exams were typically over what, 50? i would say, she's kinda that type of prof na you can tell hindi talaga pang teaching, though she does make a high effort in making her class engaging. overall, i agree that she's not the best when it comes to expounding psych topics. best of luck,more

No gadgets class but I understand why. The exams are what’s difficult. It’s like being taught how to walk and the exam is asking you to do gymnastics. Majority of the class is barely passing her exams. Ma’am provides the readings and ppts naman but she can be confusing. Sometimes the exam is based on the book but she’ll use the ppt for some of the questions. She teaches well and makes class fun! Just really make sure to write down notes because some of what she discusses won’t be in the book or ppt I get the other comment about her character. She can be really passive aggressive at times.more

good luck? 😭 many of my friends who ended up having to take her (2025-2026, first sem) did not enjoy her tests. i forgot if it was because of difficulty, test types, or all the above (probably this one). her character is also questionable (passive-aggressiveness, shows little concern for the class and your performance). this is all coming off the top of my head, so it'd be better if one of her former students could give a more comprehensive review.more

had her last year and would say she’s very a-able! there’s a book that u can read throughout the sem but tbh u can survive without it since she has her own notes of the lessons in the modules (theyre organized nicely as well so that’s a plus 😀) yun lang personally felt like those summaries were kinda half baked tbh. but other than that u can survive her quizzes w her module lecs (iirc u have two tries for each quiz, and they’re pretty easy naman!). there’s a group that u have to form at the start of the course as well and basically y’all are gonna do group assessments together w a final project in the end (it’s fun tho!). her class was v manageable naman and walang sync at all BAHAHA. more

had her for psyc 23 - idk lang but our experience is diff na from previous reviews !! - workload isn’t as heavy as they say and she moves dls naman as long as you ask - her lectures are easy to follow kasi parang kinekwento nya lang and her notes are easy to review/understand - READ THE BOOK please ! very helpful to understand the concepts/application IRL more especially for quizzes !! - fun class may kahoot + quizziz hehehe - shes not terror bc she understands the effects it has on students + learning !!! (therapist tingz) - yes and then the final project is fun as long as your group actually chooses smth you want to do ♡more

Hello! Late update but I was able to get an A!! Here are some tips which I hope will be useful overall! - Take the LTs seriously!! Know terminology word for word and make sure you know how to apply the concepts she will be discussing or providing during her lectures. Each LT is 10% but its cumulative so each LT can really pull the other scores up or down depending on your performance throughout the whole term! - Follow her rubric to a T! Make sure to be organized and even if you think she wont ask for it (ie. definitions, systems, examples,analagies, etc.) provide it!! Don’t be lenient about her papers because she is very critical with your work (I think she does it naman to make sure you are doing providing correct/quality work). - Listen during her lectures! I kid you not it really helped pull my grade up in terms of participation and her exams. Def B-A able depending on effort and willingness to take her classes srsly!! Your exam scores can make or break ure final grade hahahamore

For future references: she’s an okay professor, but not the most exceptional psych prof out there. Whenever someone would ask a question to her in class during ToP, she always hits us with a “That I’m not sure… I don’t know eh… that’s what the *theorist* only indicated eh…” (though she will still try to answer pa naman). She can be also passive-aggressive during consultations or when you do something that icks her. The average of her tests in every class is low, and a lot of people attempt to loadrev from her—so I would argue that kind of reflects her performance as a prof. Many of her questions in the exams can be only found in the book, and her PowerPoints aren’t that helpful to be honest. So yeah, good luckmore
