Aidoe is goated, lectures jam the readings

IMO, Aidoe (Balboa) is goated. Did not take Torres, but Aidoe’s class was great for me cuz: Attendance is checked but not strict since he believes that it’s a student’s right to cut. Just be honest with him, and he’ll be chill with it. Lectures are great since he jams the readings there. If you really don’t have time to read, there! Still suggest you read because there are some concepts better explained by the readings, but yeah. No surprise concepts on his assessments, so that’s great. However, he doesn’t upload his slides, so yeah lecture or ask for notes! Workload is fine. Nothing terrible since he is more theoretical than other profs, and he kinda says that he’s the “bad end of the stick” prof since he’s less experienced and less specialized in the concepts, but imo that actually makes the class easier since you don’t have to overthink how to apply the stuff. As long as you get the theories and follow guidelines, go! Consult if grade conscious. Grading? Says he grades low. However, he does curve, so just listen to how he will do it since I took him intersession, and he said he might change his curving system. Vibes? Gremlin turned into a sociologist. Chaotic in an amusing way. You never feel judged cuz he’s understanding. Minimal effort gets you a B or higher, so getting a grade lower than that might be a skill-issue / group-issue. Would give him a 8.5/10, which is higher than what I rate most profs. Yeah, take the sociology gremlin.more

balboa is p good!!! i enjoyed his class and it was an easy b+ with like just average effort esp since i had sm majors that sem…def an A if u give more than average effort i took him last year lang, hes a new and young prof - Hes so nice! does not take attendance but will check on you out of concern for your health and well-being 🥹 - He grades really low..but he curves really high!!! if you’re the highest scorer in the class you get the A and he adjusts everyone elses score to that. So if you got like 30/45 and ur the highest scorer…u get the A and he will adjust all the other grades based on the highest scorer (this is based on what happened in our class) - super few assignments too and really manageable as long as you try even a little bit! only about 5 assessments/assignments total i think - does not require you to read readings!! but ofc he really appreciates it if you do - hes v nice and very open to ALL opinions even if he disagrees - orals were online for us…he was rlly nice about it and gave us a lot of freedom i wud take him again if i could!more

balboa is the GOAT. had him for socsc 12, he has a lot of readings BUT you are not required to read any of them for the discussion! reading them will help for tests, but most of the content on the tests (mostly essay type) will be based on what he discusses in class. plus, even if theyre not required, he gives reading days before discussing a new reading. an a is possible with effort! hes a bit discerning with how he grades his essays, but honestly as long as you listen in class and make sure to answer as best as you can, an a is very possible he is petty lenient especially with deadlines, and he is very very very approachable! he loves to chat with students before and after class about different topics, and hes pretty funny and entertaining when he teaches! hes also very passionate about what he teaches, and loves student input and opinions during discussions, and he really fosters a good learning environment where you can really express yourself academically and intellectually so yea, 10/10 prof for me, if i could pick him for every socsc class i have, i would.more

Discussion-heavy, high standards, curves

LOVED BALBOA (AIDOE) granted my time in his class was much shorter/crammed because it was during intercession but I honestly learned so much from him. He’s one of those profs who really loves his discipline and really tries to be active with you when teaching, like its more discussion rather than mere lecture. Sometimes I even left his classroom crying because of how raw and vulnerable the discussion gets. Just like what the other person said, he grades pretty low for low effort, as he says “I can’t just lower my standard”, but he curves especially if your course isn’t heavily intertwined with the social sciences. Personally, I got a B+ and didn’t find his assessments like crazy-level challenging given I had only 2 other classes to worry about and I had really amazing groupmates for the group paper. Regardless though, if you aren’t super swamped in units and want a really engaging lecture, i heavily recommend aidoe !!more

had him this intersession, and since the goal is to be in the upper percentile in the class to get an A like what anon said, I found that the 1 objective quiz he administers is the best way to put yourself in front; in the group papers ppl have a tighter score distribution (a good thing!) than in the indiv test. So logically, this advice doesn't work if everyone scores similarly in the test (he showed us the score distribution for the test in class and it's spread from F to A). You're in great hands tho! he's my favorite prof evermore

Mixed modality set-up (in a week it’s one asynch and one onsite which i liked naman from him) - I dont think he cares ab overcuts but i never actu tried to exceed 6 haha - fun discussions naman, do the reading during asynch sessions so that you can engage in class discussions but you would get by naman without it - u can talk to him about anything even outside of the course - readings are important tho in his papers since it requires u to mention certain topics from authors - in terms of grading he grades pretty low and he admits it lolll - 2 discussion boards and 2 group papers iirc which u have to submit a hard copy onsite - 1 presentation for binhi (high expectations)more

super super chill prof, he’s fairly new and does call himself a rookie prof compared to his co faculty. I never really read any readings since you could research about them anyway if you need to do your paper on it but listening to his discussions will also be fine for you. A thing about him is that he will tell you he really likes your paper and that you did really well but you’d end up with a 16/20 or a 21/25 but he says he curves the grade naman so idk. He also calls random people sometimes during his discussions to share experiences related to the discussion. So just be prepared for that also. If you want a chill socsc def take him!!more

Nice guy :) tho he yaps A LOT and most of the time idek if he’s still talking about the lecture or he’s js yapping. TIP!! Sit on the front row cos his ppts are super small and doesn’t allow pics during lecture. He also discusses with lights off and the presented screen is mainly his “guide” and not for urs to see cos the fonts r again, SUPER SMALL.more
