Take Laniog for SOCSC 12 if you want a lecturer students call a vibe, will actually do a long reading list, and can stay present in the room. his classroom discussions are a mix of lectures and informal conversations. during his informal lectures, it really feels like he is training us to be activists and socially conscious. he also hates the rich and will force his beliefs onto you, saying things like “no rich person gets to where they are without doing something immoral” and “ateneans are spoiled brats.” trying to argue or reason with him will not work because “he is always right” and it’s you who needs to learn.
for our requirements, we didn’t have any quizzes, midterms, or final exams. we just needed to make a tweet weekly about the discussions, submit reading responses (1,500 words) based on the readings, and complete an unconventional final project on a topic of our choosing.
even if the requirements seem doable, his grading system sucks a lot. even without exams or quizzes, the grading is purely subjective and based on his personal feelings and bias. he does not have any rubric whatsoever, and even if you ask him for feedback or a consultation, if your work doesn’t match his personal standards, he will grade you low.
absolutely the worst professor i’ve had in college. at the beginning of the semester and again on the last day of class, he said that only a few of us would get an A, and the rest would get B’s. but when he released the final advisory marks, very few got an A or B+, and the majority received a grade of D to C+.
regarding those marks, many of his students approached him to ask for a specific breakdown. that’s when they realized he had given them incorrect grades and used the excuse that students didn’t upload a copy of their scores to the google drive he asked his beadles to create. he deliberately gives low grades to students he doesn’t like so the final marks he submits meet his department’s standards. this change came after he was called out for giving too many high grades, which is also why he changed his syllabus.
he absolutely hates and does not allow the use of ai. even if you didn’t use ai in your work, if he believes it was made by ai, he will give you a low grade and won’t allow any chance for resubmission. his ai policy is entirely based on his personal judgment. he doesn’t use any ai or plagiarism checker and it’s just him deciding, even if you contest it.
he also holds vendettas against students. if he doesn’t like you, he’ll make it known to the entire class. he will grade you low, shout at you, and use entire class sessions to vent his frustrations. he also constantly talks about how his experiences are more valid than almost every atenista’s because he came from an impecunious background, yet he lacks open mindedness and fails to understand that even those from affluent families can experience poverty, not just financially, but in other ways too.
overall, don’t take him but if he’s your professor good luck and go all out with every requirement!more

We didn’t have quizzes; only tweets after every week, which means less than 280 characters (but he really isn't strict about this even if you go over). These tweets can consist of your insights, personal experiences (related to the lesson ofc), or thought-provoking questions. We only had 3 reading responses, which were at least 1,500 words. So it's very light and manageable. Sometimes it's just hard for me to reach the minimum word count but other than that, I'd say he grades pretty high. Just note that because we only had 3 reading responses, they were 1 is to 1 with your final grade. I think this is what brought down most of my classmates' grades. ALSO, as someone who has really bad social anxiety, he doesn't hold it against you if you don't recite often. I forgot the weight of recitation but from the first day, he said that as long as you're attentive, writing down notes, and not on your phone, he'll give you a good or perfect grade. The final requirement was flexible depending on your interests, and we ended up having an event (similar to science fair) where we exhibit what we've been working on for the past semester.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
- he's very anti-capitalistic so if you share the same sentiments and have a lot of thoughts on social issues, you'll get along well. I don't think you have to agree with him but you NEED to respect and at least try to understand where he's coming from. I personally didn't agree with him on everything but I always made sure to emphasize our common ground, because that's how some of the best discussions are facilitated imo.
- his class is a mix of formal and informal discussions. It feels very Socratic in format. Sometimes we'd just discuss in a circle and talk about ✨how we can envision a better world✨ or what it means to be a feminist 💕
- Also, late submissions have a dedication of 3 points, which means the highest grade you can get is a B for late reading response submissions. That being said, that deduction is constant so even if you end up submitting at the end of the sem, you won't have any additional deductions.

Another thing you may want to know is the Unessay Project, the final project for his course. You can do anything you want - video, game, infographic, etc. (even an essay, despite the name) - so long as it's creative and related to the lesson. As someone who's not too fond of papers, I found this pretty fun!
All in all, I think Sir prioritizes learning above all else. He's willing to make adjustments to the schedule or to how the discussions are done (ex. having open forum discussions on certain topics) if it will help the class learn.

this is such a lie, he dislikes people cutting when they have no valid reason (because people usually tend to cut his class for their majors and even still that's not really responsible of a person to do no?) but he doesn't mind naman otherwise. the tweets he assigns can be passed super late as long as you pass them at all. crammed a couple tweets in a day at the very end of the sem and got perfect for all of them, living proof ako don.
hindi naman perfect or overachieving gusto niya sa students niya. he wants you to engage with his material to the best of your ability. high standards niya but they're reasonable and he's never failed anyone without a reason. he is literally so lax about deadlines as long as you pass the reading responses all at the end of the sem you can still get a grade of B+ that is the most forgiving prof I have ever known in humss.more

Most of the people in our class got B/B+ while around 7 people got an AI think sir grades relatively high, but you do need to put in the effort for his requirements:1. Reading responses - you can get away with really listening attentively to sir’s discussions on the readings and still get a perfect score as long as u kinda dig deeper and sir really appreciates it if you can connect the concepts to your personal life.2. Tweets - we had to write 2 tweets during the first week then submit 1 every week after that. These are actually quite simple and straightforward.3. Unessay Project - this was really just any kind of project where you apply a certain lesson in the class.4. Participation - for our class, he graded participation kinda low since not much were actively engaging in class. But he gave a bonus activity to help pull our grades up, so it was all chill.He usually only does things kinda different if he thinks people aren’t taking his class seriously. For our class, he made it seem like we were going to have a quiz, but in reality it was just for participation to test who actually did the reading. Overall was a pretty okay class and was able to get an A along with other heavy subjects (I had him during a 26 unit sem). May be a bit intimidating but kaya naman siya!more

Very high effort class and incredibly insightful! As anon mentioned earlier, there’s a heavy emphasis talaga on topics relating to privilege and capitalism within many of the long readings he’ll give you.
Going to be adding on lang to what was said so far but:
Speaking of the readings, a lot of them come from perspectives of different marginalized groups and are often by authors that are alive to this day (very modern talaga woaa)
Expected outputs are weekly tweets (insight relating to your daily life / experiences that week) and Reading responses (that I believe will be modified this semester to be more short form) + workshops and group discussions.
Other fun things was that he gave our class free tickets to Mga Anak ng Unos in UP!more

If you’re looking for an A-able professor, maybe you should think twice.
He only gives them out to a maximum of five people, usually those who have aced his essays. Thus, the majority of the class got a B or B+.
It’s difficult to gauge his taste when it comes to judging essays at first, so you might not get a perfect score on your first try. However, in our case, he gave a bonus essay at the end that replaced the grade of the essay with the lowest score.
Tip: He really prefers essays that include a mix of personal anecdotes related to the readings he assigns.

Honestly, sir Jehu isn't as bad as *some* of his students make him out to be. I actually enjoyed his class, especially the long readings. I even recommended some of our assigned readings to my friends. You just have to have a lot of patience and be really good at managing your time. Also, if discussions on privilege make you uncomfortable, that means you're understanding the lesson. Either that or you're part of the problem. A-able with max effort and lots and lots of diligence.more

Sir Laniog is solid! Fairly manageable workload, esp. for tweets (short write-ups about how the lessons connect to your daily life) and the final project (search up UnEssay Project on the web for more details). Readings for reading responses are a bit long, but you can get by focusing only on short parts of the reading. No quizzes, so your grade comes from those three components + recitation. I think he's still fine tuning his grading system, but should be B/B+ with moderate effort, A if you also recite a bit. Good luck,!more

Sir Jehu all the way!! We were his first batch of students and wasn't an easy A (due to the readings) but he definitely was an insightful prof! I gained different perspectives because of him and he really was a vocal (and politically-driven) prof, which actually made me strive to do better.
LASTLY! His final project was such a fun experience kasi ikaw talaga bahala sa topic at kung ano gagawin mo, basta ma-relate mo sa natutunan mo at sa mga readings...
