Copy-pasted (2nd time na, kunin niyo na siya habang may opportunity pa): Hi I took Mr. Bartilet for PHILO 13, AY 2023–2024 S2. 1. Requirements (actual, not the ones on syllabus* - refer to 3d for details) a. Several Cornell notes b. Several ethical case studies c. Report about one reading d. Midterm and final oral exam (our final oral exam became recorded for some reason) 2. Pros a. Everything is done in groups of 3 except the midterm and final oral exam (idk if that’s a pro or con, but pro for me kasi may friends ako sa class). - Even though there are a lot of requirements in terms of number, the Cornell notes are pretty easy to make naman. - Yung ethical cases may guide naman siyang binigay. - Yung report about one reading was done toward the end of the semester, so pwede mong i-reference yung Cornell notes. - Generally yung kailangan mo lang i-review would be the orals. He gives the thesis statements in advance. I got a thesis statement na wala sa kahit anong reading which is very weird but the other three statements in the midterm and all four statements in the final were in the reading naman. Disclaimer: Whether or not we did it correctly, hindi na namin alam kasi wala nga siyang binalik. b. I think he doesn’t care if you… - Cut (refer to 3b for the reason). If you want a chill class and ez A, just take the PHILO 13 Filipino class at night (kasi the dept is probably gonna gatekeep the profs from the students). 3. Cons a. It’s as if hindi siya nagtuturo sa Ateneo. Parang may sinusunod siyang sariling calendar. - He sends us announcements via the OBF email kahit na na-inform na siya ng beadle - He didn’t know about the university holiday on Jan 25. - One of our tasks had English instruction (the class is Filipino), and we were asked to submit it to the class president (“president” sabi niya, hindi “beadle”). - May sarili siyang digital day na different from the university’s. - Kahit na study day may online class pa kami. b. Marami siyang async class, tapos mostly ina-announce on the same day (hapon pa). For context, 5pm yung class namin, tapos may time na nag-send siya at 4:47pm (13 minutes before the class). - Marami siyang mga emergency sa buhay. Hindi ko alam if I will still believe him. He got sick a few times, may family emergency a couple times, may emergency meeting, tapos nasunugan din yung bahay kaya late na-release yung grades namin. Whenever that happens, sasabihin lang niyang async yung class and ire-remind kami to do our readings and other activities - The midterm orals of half the class dapat nasa isang Monday, pero bigla-bigla na lang siya nag-message one night before na mamu-move sa Thursday of that same week. c. His onsite classes, which are already very few to start with, are very unproductive. - There were several times that he would just ask students to read aloud the reading. Parang grade school vibes. - Nagpapacomment siya about the reading, pero medyo insubstantial; doesn’t add depth to either the reading or the students’ points. d. His syllabus was released late (week 4 na lumabas) and he didn’t really follow its contents, especially regarding requirements. e. He takes a very long time to reply to emails. - This is quite ironic, since many of his emails end with “Kung may mga katanungan ay huwag kayong mahihiyang mag-email”. - He has also not returned the grades of any single requirement back. 1y Reply Rising contributor May teaching style ba? Teaching Style and Class Matters Sige since yun na rin naman na ang joke, eto na sisimulan ko. - Kapag nandiyan siya, mukha kaming reading class. Wala naman ako napupulot sa kaniya kasi we're just reading the material verbatim. May sharing din, which wala naman siyang sinasabi kung tama o mali HAHAHA. - We never actually got to do ethics sa class niya. Hindi ko natanong kung tama ba o mali 'yung gagawin ko sa buhay. - Just do something while you're there either other school work or chumismis ka sa katabi mo kasi mabo-bore out ka. 2. Requirements and grading system. - we had 2 orals (mid, final), supposedly 10 cornell notes, and 1 presentation - orals: bibigyan ka niya ng 4 questions in advance, and explain it. Standard philo stuff. Make sure na mauna ka sa sign ups kasi AFAIK kapag ikaw mauuna ikaw pipili ng question para sa majority ng class (yes sa lahat ng mag-orals that day yung question mo na pipiliin ng una 'yung magiging question for around half ng mage-exam that day). - supposedly yung finals dapat ganito rin, pero for some reason naging online siya (kasi may ganap daw). - cornell: basically summarize the reading into three pages. EZ AF if you have (1) friends in class and (2) you can divide the readings properly. Madali lang din siya i-joketime if you're pressed for time. - cases: they're easy, similar lang siya sa cornell. You have a case at hand, then use the appropriate ethical theory to solve it. Ang main tool na gagamitin niyo dito ay 'yung magisterial lecture ni Dr. Angeles. Know it by heart. - presentation: pick one mula sa mga cornell notes, and present. Online din 'to for some weird reason. - dapat magkakaron kami ng quizzes sa kaniya, pero never natuloy. 3. Grading Style:??? Wala siyang binalik ngi isa sa requirements namin so we never knew kung ano grades namin. A-able siya basta ipasa mo lang lahat, pero legit you are blind in this class. 4. Other matters: - Pero most of the time, absent siya. IDK kung sadya or talagang may ganap sa kanila pero legit madalas siyang hindi pumasok. After ng midterm never na ako pumasok sa room namin non. - Nakakainis lang kasi kapag walang pasok, lagi niya ina-announce minutes before. Mas nakakairita 'to kasi baka naghihintay ka sa school nang matagal, tas free cut pala. Worse, 'yung classes niya gabi so you might be waiting for nothing. - A lot of submissions are done thru gdrive na set-up ng beadle. Just submit there, and you'll be fine. If he actually looks at it and reads the stuff you pass is another story. Overall, sobrang mid. If you need a class to fill your IPS, or an extra A, take him. Otherwise, other profs may serve you better.more

Enlo Took him for 11.04 last SY first sem! Here are ma tots: Pros - workload is doable; mostly cornell notes (organized way of taking down notes from readings), then for the essay assessments, you’ll need to explain the given texts using both readings and personal example (well thats what i did lol), there’s midterm and final orals but our midterm was recorded for some reason I forgot I think some students reached out to him. - very considerate w deadlines. I remember he extended the cornell notes multiple times and even accepted late submissions (pls dont abuse his kindness lawl hahaha). - sometimes he dismisses early din hahaha 👨🏻🍼 - very chill prof literally hahah; never saw him mad tbh which is kinda scary lawl, very tatay vibes and yeah there will be times where you’ll get bored during his discussion because the way he speaks is so reserved and slow placed. Also, in terms of teaching style — he seems to only go by the book and use the examples from there, which i didnt mind tbh it helped naman hahah. - grades high afaik; i remember getting all As for my cornell notes when he released it at the last week of the sem lol. - the only con i remember is that he cancels class like minutes before the class time so since my class were in the late afternoon, I wasted some days going to school for nothing hahahha (He has a lot of fam emergencies ;-;) Vv A-able would retake his class if given the chance :>more

I was beadle for his class (pinili ako, i know i have the choice to say no, nahihiya p ako mag say ng no) anyway, he doesn't return grades, doesn't post submission portals on time, comes to class late also, doesn't reply to inquiry emails (fr, the first and only reply i got from him was during finals when i sent him the final orals sched) In class, marami ka naman matutunan yataaa because most of the time he gets off topic and then circle back to his lesson. Plus most of the time he would repeat what he taught last meeting or last week tapos magiging late na kayo sa lesson plan then proceeds to speed things up when finals is near. His attitude can be pretty much seen in how he conducts himself in class, although maayos naman yung lecture at times, nakakaoverthink at nakakakaba yung kada patak ng oras ng walang binibigay na feedback about your performance sa midterm orals.more

Had Bartilet for Philo 11.04. Super dad vibes and the workload didnt feel that heavy as the class was quite flexible. Assessments were cornell notes, orals, and a group presentation (for us its in video format.) Got an A in his class, I think once he sees that you make effort and submit everything you'll get a high grade. Class may be in Filipino but you can use English in recitation ^__^ usually though recit is just reading from the book. Feel free to pm me if you want more details:)more

I took Sir Bartilet for two Philo subjects and I'd do it again if I had the chance tbh. I believe he did recits the second time around, but I wouldn't worry about it at all cuz he's definitely on the chiller side of profs. It's easy to get distracted during class especially if pagod ka na from the day and evening yung class niya, but do your best to take notes! He teaches in Filipino, but he's very kind during recits if you're not too fluent. He will even point out sometimes how uve improved speaking hehehe. Best tip I could give you is DO WELL IN ORALS (which is relatively chill din imo)more
