TLDR: You will learn something at the cost of your grade and sanity. Setup: - Your grade will most likely come from 1 or 2 (online) exams, 4 group quizzes, 1 paired reporting, and 1 group reporting - Group quizzes were a hit or miss. Groupings were announced on the day of the test. One small mistake in your choice of words can result to a 1-point or 2-points deduction out of a perfect score of 4. Your group will be given a set of 4 questions and the average score for the 4 questions will be your group grade. It helps if your provide examples. - The exam. Honestly one of the most difficult exams I took in my whole college life. I’m not even sure if you can study for it since it was based on the films you’ll be watching and the application of the readings. The average score for his classes was a C-C+. He had us retake the test with a lower point corresponding to your newly corrected answer. Still saw people getting 1.something out of 4. - Group Reporting. This grade component requires everyone to report on one of the six movies he will give you. Probably the easiest to accomplish among all his tasks. Maximum of 1 hour. CONSULT with him. - Paired work. Hmmm mixed emotions on this one. Scores weren’t made aware unless you ask for it. Some of the people I know did okay for this one, most didn’t. You could philosophize as much as you can but if he already saw holes in your defense, YOU’RE COOKED. He will give you a list of guide points which were unhelpful. But ultimately it’s not how bad you performed, it’s how much he deducts from your score when you commit minor mistakes that takes you out. Pros: - Relatively short readings. - Teaches well and tries well to explain the theories. - Only consider’s you late 10 minutes after the bell. Though considering that some of his classes were in bellarmine, it should be the decency afforded to you. Cons: - Does not explain the lesson nor the readings before the quizzes. - Not all parts of the reading will be discussed so it could be confusing which ideas he actually wants you to use or not. - He expects only objective answers (which should be the case) and leaves no room for other similar interpretations. Your intuition, no matter how valid or close to the idea, is not valued in his class. - Very rigid and strict adherence to his syllabus. The syllabus will not be your guide nor friend, it will be your enemy. Best to read it to heart beforehand. - Grades very INCONSISTENTLY and gives absurdly high deductions. Short anecdote: We had our group presentation scheduled in the middle of April 2024. This was the time where cancellation of classes occurred due to the heat. Our group apparently forgot to bring an adapter for the ppt presentation (ppt wasn’t need though). We asked him if we could borrow his adapter and he said we should borrow from SEC-A instead. I assumed he didn’t bring any since it was just a presentation day. Our classroom was in bellarmine. My group mate had to run from bel to sec-A under the April heat, 12:30PM, to get that adapter. After our presentation, he took out his adapter and started using it to present his ppt for a few reminders. The look on my face was of pure shock. A deduction for borrowing your stuff would have been nice. 😊 Personal comments: - I was able to read some of the group quizzes from my classmates, one had a near perfect score and the other having a 2/4. MINIMAL DIFFERENCE. The one that had a lower score also had an example and both contained quotes directly from the reading. - I don’t believe that groupings will affect your score by a lot since he grades inconsistently nga. Some people think its about being lucky with your groupmates but honestly most in my class were diligent and smart people, most were from honor’s courses but the results were still dismal. - I consulted with him multiple times but I only got nonchalant responses which honestly didn’t do anything to help my grades. - Basically, if you get low grades in his class, it’s on you to how you’ll improve. No help from him. - You are on your own in his class, unless you enlist with friends. He does not care about how you perform, so try to fend for yourself early on by only trying to think of how he wants you to think. - I believe he likes to put a barrier between him and the students. Nothing wrong with that. But trying to get near an (your) instructor to try and learn more or salvage your grades does not mean you’re being a kiss ass. Conclusion: AFAIK from asking around, the average grade he gave was C+ to B, you can have that by putting much effort. I think you can get a B+ if you try your hardest, get paired/grouped with people who absorb and execute only the things he only wants (and excludes their personal learning or interpretations), or if you’re lucky with the universe.more

enjoyed my experience in sir noel's class! for me, he's not that bad even if most say otherwise :> 🔹️lectures - engaging and fun! make sure to recite (he usually just asks for ur opinions and experiences) and take notes!!! slides are not posted. 🔹️4 group quizzes, 4 questions each, random groupings on the day - one for each reading / moral theory - can bring 1 index card for notes - pay attention to the intro lecture for each reading before the quiz. this gives background/context in understanding the readings better, but the quiz mostly covers what he still hasn't discussed. really a test of your understanding of the readings. - how i prepared: the readings are in english (short lang so not bad), but i made my index card notes in filipino already. watched crash course vids of the moral theories. - how to take the quizzes: longer answers don't always mean better. keep it concise, make sure you're answering exactly what the question is asking for. ask if the question isn't clear to you. - what my groups usually did: all discuss/contribute answers to the questions orally and take notes. delegate 1 question to each person. exchange papers and check each other's work. 🔹️ group presentation - coverage: application of moral theory to an assigned movie how we prepared: know the principles behind how the moral theory determines a right or wrong action - use key words based on sir's discussion choose scenes in the movie that you are confident in to apply the theory and assess the morality of the action, quality over quantity for the scenes discussed - take his suggestions during the consultation, he was particular about the flow and conciseness of the presentation + being able to defend ur thesis statement based on the scenes you discuss 🔹️ midterm exam - coverage: application of 3 moral theories to 3 movies - how i prepared: same with group presentation, know how each moral theory judges a right or wrong action ("paano masasabing tama o mali ang isang kilos batay sa teorya?) + practiced picking movie scenes and explaining and applying each moral theory to it 🔹️orals by pair - coverage: choose 2 moral theories to apply to a movie (random, chosen by a dice on the day) to explain 2-3 scenes + explain in your opinion which one's more appropriate / best to use in those scenarios - how we prepared (we crammed in 1 day and still did okay hehe): chose 2 theories we knew the best and could apply to any movie that was picked. prepared an intro about the theories + the scenes we wanted to use (similar prep to midterm exam) + explain which theory was more appropriate - follow up questions were chill, more about the strengths and weaknesses of the theories chosen good luck,!! i hope you'll learn a lot in Sir Noel's class and enjoy as much as i did :> 🤍more

keriboom naman! an A is Possible kahit magpacute lng - mauuna ang group quizzes before ang lecture so medyo nakakahilo esp since the first few readings are a Little Thick to get through (mills and kant) but i think it would help if you read THEN look at summaries - minsan din nagpapapreliminary lecture sya and i'd say pay more attention to those than to the readings because he WILL repeat the most relevsnt points throughout the sem and you'l notice a pattern ---- he doesnt tell you to parrot but malalaman mo kung paano nya talaga iniintindi yung bawat reading so dun ka na kumapit - you'll do 4 modules on ethics, one or two group quizzes each (MAGBASA KA NA REN! isang beses lang ako nagpabuhat shoutout pa rin sa groupmates ko huhuhu pero di sapat na magdasal kang magaling yung groupmates mo/mabilis magsulat and magtranslate), then a group presentation (medyo super vague ng instructions nya + tbh di ako pumapasok pag presentstion days), two long tests and one oral exam. if i were you, the long tests are the ones that's most worth investing time in since you have the most control over it. medyo nagets ko na how to review for them around end of sem --- try to see how each ethical theory applies to the movie/s at hand kasi usually ganun lang din yung tanong (ie. how does theory 1 apply to movie A? how is it different to how theory 2 would apply to it?) - madali lang naman mapatawa si sir so pag nagkakamali ka sa recit di ka naman mapapahiya keriboom lang eme eme lang ako dun - bawal laptops specifically --- if youre gonna bring a gadget and use it throughout class it should be able to lay flat on the table ALSO OK LANG KAHIT TAGLISH SWEAR DI NAMAN SUPER STRICT SI SIR BASTA DI DIRE DIRETSONG ENGLISH AHDJAJSJAJDJS di naman sya filo prof, philo prof lang so wala sya pake sa grammar unless it doesnt affect what youre trying to say overall would recommend !!! very responsive and great lectures, medyo nakakabaliw pero makakalabas ka pa naman nang buhay !!!more

I took Sir's class for Philo 11.06 2nd Semester 22-23. He was really understanding and would always emphasize that our class was Philosophy not Filipino, so he wouldn't really be that strict with regards to using only Filipino. But all requirements had to be done in Filipino. He allocated 2 weeks per module, in that week we would have 2 synchronous sessions, a quiz and a reading for the quiz. Sir doesn't discuss readings before the quiz and the quizzes are based on the readings. All the requirements were out of 4, the quizzes were either 8 or 4 questions. Midterm requirement was an individual paper and the final requirement was orals by pair. Make sure to read and still put in effort. A-able class and I learned a lot. Just make sure to follow the syllabus, sir also set deadlines at noon for our quizzes then.more

Hmmm I don't know :( Try to cover the content as deeply and comprehensively as she did in her lectures. She appreciates critical thought, but make sure it's not wrong HAHAHA otherwise she will pull you down :( (just like how she grades papers). Prepare for curveball questions by mastering the foundations hehe if that makes sense.more

Adding to what said, we also had breakout room discussions almost every meeting which I really appreciated because it was a good way to dissect the topic and share your thoughts and opinions with your classmates. Quizzes can be tricky so you really have to digest the reading well and be sure to know the key concepts in it. ((it’s rlly reading compre)). Note that a handful of the req readings were in Filipino. Overall, I genuinely enjoyed his class because of the conversations we had. Echoing what said rin,, this class is one you’d take for the sole purpose of learning and deepening your understanding and appreciation for philosophy. B+ able w/ effort!!more

Love her so much! She's not bullshit at all and sobrang relatable ng lectures niya. As in after every class, sobrang napapaisip ako about my life. After I took her for 2 sems, she took a leave and my next Philo profs were really no match. Now that she's back, take her!!! No regrets!!!more

Hi! Manny Dy is really old (like he was my dad's prof 30 years ago type) and basically all he does during class is read the powerpoint word per word. The powerpoint is exactly the same as the lecture notes that you will need to buy, so you don't have to listen to class at all. Most times people are just studying for other subjects or doing other things cuz it's a huge class and he won't notice. The only time I really learned philo was when I had to understand na the notes for the final oral exams LOL. Sometimes it's fun tho cuz he shows movies and he doesnt have a lot of requirements. So if you want a really chill prof, go get him, but he isnt the type of prof who will make you think and love philo.more

I had him (again) but for PHILO 13 (onsite 1st sem 23-24) Requirements for the class last sem was an 4 group quizzes, these were picked by random during the day of the quiz and you'll discuss and answer 3-4 questions about a reading. He honestly asks for a lot, like even if you think you cover most of what he's asking for comments like "walang mali pero kulang pa" Other reqs are 2 LTs, a final oral exam and a group report about the movie. The LTs usually cover 2 of theories, and 2 of the movies each. You have to know how to relate the movies to the theories really well. Tldr nalungkot ako sa mga marka ko dito w the effort I put in 🤩more

Very fair! In my experience, he's v structured when he grades papers. He's a no bullshit prof though so study v hard for his orals! Likely he'll latch onto something off-tangent you said and you'll spend the rest of the time explaining it. Explaining well gets you a B at the most. Just talking about the stuff discussed in class properly in papers will get you at least a C+. Push a little harder and question or give your own insights/ideas and it's a B+/A.more

Basta pag nag-orals ka kay clemente, siguraduhin mong alam mo yung basic concepts. Explain mo lang nang maayos tapos magbigay ng maraming personal na halimbawa. Pagnagawa mo yon, magtatanong siya ng mga mind fuck na tanong. Oks lang naman kung mahirap yung tanong niya kasi pagganon sure bol b ka na. Kung yung tanong niya sa yo is abt yung basic concepts, ibigsabihin non may sinabi kang mali. Sa mahihirap na tanong, walang tama o maling sagot basta pagsumagot ka panindigan mo bes.more

Ramoya is really my favorite out of all the philo profs I've had! My friend described her lectures as poetry. As enlightening and as hugot and real as it gets. Never a dull moment in class. You can really see her personality in her teaching. Has lots of kwentos and insights. She teaches in English btw, but humor sometimes in Filipino! Her workload: 2 reaction papers on movies, 2 papers, short essay on crosswise quizzes, group report (with her only, not in front of the class), and final orals! I'd say moderate workload lang! Super generous in grading, usually gives B-A in requirements. Gave lots of As in the final grades!!! As in! Good teacher + good grades!more

CLEMENTE. You may not like his grading style but I think it's fair. Personally, I did bad in the quizzes because even though it is objective, you still gotta explain it clearly and I'm bad in essays in general. He also requires everyone to recite at least twice and the KEY is taking down notes. Acceptable answers are from the previous lessons we had, and it should be explained in the same logic so it's important to write notes!more

took him for first sem 24-24 onsite and in summary: pros: - you will really understand the theories BY HEART because he will make you read all of the readings - for sure ure gonna go out of his class understanding the diff ethic theories very well BUT AT D EXPENSE OF WHAT!!!!! cons - he will give u quizzes EVERY reading. 3-4 item quiz lang pero group quiz yun. SO IT WILL REALLY AFFECT UR GRADE IF URE PUT IN A GROUP NA DI NAGBASA OR NAINTINDIHAN YUNG READING - sa context ng di maintindihan ang reading: di siya nagddiscuss ng readings bago mag quiz. kapag mali pagkakaintindi mo nung reading goodluck na lang siguro. - he discusses the lessons after the quiz na so wala ka na chance bumawi HAHAHAHAHA. although u can bawi sa mga individual long test - SUPER DAMI ng mga quiz niya. halos every meeting may quiz so u rlly cant bullshit ur way in his class. ( 1 reading = 1 quiz + 2 long tests) - the group quizzes will either make or break ur grades also. u cant choose ur grpmates either kasi nirrandomize niya every quiz - he’s super objective and specific with answers. kapag may mali kang use ng word bawas na yun sa grade mo. - he grades super low 😭😭😭 also,, di siya nag aallow ng laptops or phones. if u wanna take notes, i suggest use an ipad or a notebook. bad reviews for sir clemente? i think the strictest he's been in class is w his gadget rule but other than that, he's a really nice prof reqs aren't that heavy, just a few group quizzes (you get shuffled every time and you have 20 minutes or so to answer a few questions about the assigned reading in a short form essay), long test na essay, group presentation, and pair orals for finals. he's vv open to questions and consultations so take up every chance to do so if you're confused about the class content. be sure to take notes lang bec he has specific translations for english philo terms!more

pros:- you will learn a lot! he teaches in a straightforward way and tries his best to explain lessons as clearly as possible- he's not super strict and even goes along with the students' vibe- he relates the lessons to real-life scenarios, which is super helpful and makes the requirements more manageablecons:- the requirements can be pretty challenging, esp the midterm exam. you REALLY need to study and go through the readings- he tends to look for specific terms or phrases in quizzes, so be mindful of that--you might not always know exactly what he's looking foroverall, I enjoyed his class and learned a lot. pray well (for the quizzes).
