Before I begin, never have I imagined I would be writing down a detailed review for this professor because as someone who's passionate in Chemistry, I find it very criminal that this is how it is taught. Without further ado, a Prof review of Doc. Olivia Erin Buenafe for CHEM 31.21-Analytical Chemistry for Biologists, Lecture. For her other subjects I cannot say much, but expect the same teaching and learning experience.
Whatever expectations you have of chemistry be it positive or negative, let go of it because she will ruin that expectation in a bad way.
The canvas modules are incomplete, you are very much reliant on 3rd party sources.
Doc doesn't upload the powerpoint slides. You have to take pictures of the slides if you want to review them on a later time.
During lectures, Doc Buenafe tries her best to make it approachable for students. And this comes in the form of the occasional jokes in class during the lectures to make the concept more relatable. Unfortunately, unless you have the level of caliber that is usually taught in science high schools, it is normal and you will feel that even some of the most basic chemistry concepts get rushed by Doc Buenafe.
Get the hint: you will need to study a lot on your own time and probably will have to ask a lot of questions which is a gamble if she'll entertain them after class given there will be at least 60 of you and your classmates in the same lecture hall.
On exams, the exams are relatively okay but with the caveat if you can absorb and retain what was taught by Doc Buenafe. As far as the content is concerned, it is manageable but expect to focus more on the concepts rather than the raw calculation. And if anything for those who aren't as passionate about Chemistry, it's really all about understanding what is happening at the molecular level as far as the fundamentals go.
On grading, don't expect Doc Buenafe to submit the grades on time. You may pester her, but since she also doubles as the department head for the Chemistry department, it will be a gamble if she can submit the grades on time. If anything, expect them on the day or the day before of the uploading of grades in AISIS.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Doc Buenafe a 4/10 (to the keen Pisay alumni, this is equivalent of a 4.0/cuatro). She's a nice person to be around with, not so much when it comes to teaching and your learning experience is heavily reliant on 3rd party sources. Just be ready for a rough ride really.

1. had her online, teaching style? wala di naman yan nagtuturo eh HAHAHA. Pero tbh magaling si maam, she knows what shes doing very well,, the thing is di talaga siya magaling magturo. She expects you to know the topics already kaya I suggest msg-ask kalang palagi despite her attitude. IDK but ig she doesnt like bio/life sci majors????? kasi mabait sya sa chem ppl eh (paconfirm po mga bebs this is just a rumor). Oero what we did back then is puro solving, the only time na naapreciate ko sessions nya is when i kept on asking her questions about chem kinetics kasi yun talaga napaintindi nya through her answers.
2. as for quizzes and exams, hindi si maam yung gumawa non (or if sya i think nag semi contribute lang sya). Chem kasi creates one assessment for everyone. Yung samin dati, si sir bolinas gumawa kaya hindi ko talaga marate if ok mag assesmnt si maam.
3. uhm idk how to answer this coz she didnt return anything 🤡🤡🤡 all i got our the scores from csnvas which are quizzes, midterms, and finals mark. i dont even know the correct answers coz it was hidden. Kaya ang hirap if fair ba or not kasi i really didnt see my standing until grades came up
4. YES she assumes lahat kayo eh galing STEM na may maayos na chem background coz biomajors kayo 🤡

Teaching Style
for context, we met up w/ ma’am once a week for 2hrs every wednesday and she handled 60+ students. she teaches somewhat okay naman (...?). she does expect you to understand/remember high school-level chemistry (e.g. stoichiometry, basic thermodynamic concepts). usually, ma’am gives us a 10-15 minute period to solve some problems, discuss among ourselves, and consult with her. if you do ask her for help, make sure structured na siya, it has substance na, and it’s in-class kasi ma’am is quite busy kaya medyo unresponsive and mahirap makipagsched ng consultation outside class hours.
I suggest brushing up on those topics talaga before coming into class. personally, self-study + finding practice problems online really helped. some coursemates also expressed na class discussions would be better if they had more context and practice material.
Grades
there were four grade components namely:
1. Module Quizzes (4, 15pts each) - 60pts, 20%
2. Collated, completed problem sets - 40pts, 14%
3. Midterm Exam (Modules 1 & 2) - 100 pts, 33%
4. Final Exam (Modules 3 & 4) - 100 pts, 33%
and for our class, hindi yun na sunod :,). we had problem sets, pero we only had 1 quiz, midterms, and a final exam which ifl nerfed a lot of students kasi there’s not really much assessments to redeem yourself if ever you get a low grade in one test. THO vv important to note na, I also think bc a mix of may times wala si ma’am and nacancel classes namin bc of school events etc.
medyo flying blind kami that sem kasi yung nabalik lang sa assessment sa amin was our module quiz. nabalik rin midterm namin pero it was posted nung deadline ng submission ng grades so useless siya kasi we couldn’t really estimate ano standing namin in class nor correct our understanding based sa assessments by finals season 😕
take this w/ a grain of salt pero ifl nag-curve si ma’am kasi cinalculate ko grades habang nag final exam (haha vv sure na ako alin mali and tama sa test na yun) and was full-on expecting to barely pass, pero nabump up grade ko to 3 letter grades haha. I think the highest sa amin was B+, not sure if may naka A, most sa amin within the range of C+ to D.
Tips
- compare notes w/ other people and try to study in groups kasi she does not post her ppts haha. this may seem like a small thing pero I swear it gave me a few extra points sa exam. since fast paced and super comprehensive discussions ni ma’am, you may leave out some minor details na nasa ppt and lightly touched on ni ma’am but lalabas sa exam

4) does she expect students to have an understanding of the concepts in the lessons before she teaches them?
5) the workload in her class looks like - quite manageable or no?
6) does she upload materials on time?
7) orientation day for her subject looks like - this might be such a small detail lang but does she lay out the syllabus naman and explains what is expected from the class 😅

2) in-class quizzes, do-able since she sometimes discusses it. LTs? take home quizzes? yeah, best pray. idk where the hell she got those questions
3) given that i still got a C despite failing almost all her quizzes and tests (and me fully expecting a D), i'd say it was quite fair bc i still had other ways to pull my grade up (class projects)

took her first sem first year as a creative writing student with almost no chem knowledge so that may have added to the confused state i was constantly in in her class. but the fact that i got an A in lab and a C in her lec should say something too.

Hi, OP! The same thing happened to our batch. As her class beadle, yes she only told me to submit all our problem solving sets the day mismo ng Final Exam, and we also didn't know our grades until days before the grade release. Most of us really did not expect their grades (too low or too high than what they expected), but I think you could give it a shot na mag-appeal, although this would really be unsure.more

got a letter grade lower 'cause she lost my quiz. she retained my total points (her grading is basically summing everything up deba), n, instead of doing n-10. confronted her and even submitted a student-initiated change of grade appeal pero uhmm ako pa ang pinagalitan.
halatang eyeball lang ang scores? i deserve better sa exams sa 22o lang, coz wdym most ng scores sa essay type ay 30/60. tapos sa 2nd exam perfect q n?? ahahhaha lowkey she's a mess also. parang need siyang iremind sa scores and whatnot.
her exams are difficult af. u'll never know anong lalabas at kung saang lupalop hinugot. but PRO TIP, ask ur seniors abt her exams (wink wink). and read the readings assigned to you. wag tamarin and read all of it. may one section sa book sa Essential Biochemistry abt myoglobin and hemoglobin na parang walang sense sa pag-aaral mo much pero lalabas yun for sure. practice the practice exams even if it's hard, coz it'll make sense to u even if u feel like "wth is this??"

Doc doesn't upload the powerpoint slides. You have to take pictures of the slides if you want to review them on a later time.
During lectures, Doc Buenafe tries her best to make it approachable for students. And this comes in the form of the occasional jokes in class during the lectures to make the concept more relatable. Unfortunately, unless you have the level of caliber that is usually taught in science high schools, it is normal and you will feel that even some of the most basic chemistry concepts get rushed by Doc Buenafe.
Get the hint: you will need to study a lot on your own time and probably will have to ask a lot of questions which is a gamble if she'll entertain them after class given there will be at least 60 of you and your classmates in the same lecture hall.
On exams, the exams are relatively okay but with the caveat if you can absorb and retain what was taught by Doc Buenafe. As far as the content is concerned, it is manageable but expect to focus more on the concepts rather than the raw calculation. And if anything for those who aren't as passionate about Chemistry, it's really all about understanding what is happening at the molecular level as far as the fundamentals go.
On grading, don't expect Doc Buenafe to submit the grades on time. You may pester her, but since she also doubles as the department head for the Chemistry department, it will be a gamble if she can submit the grades on time. If anything, expect them on the day or the day before of the uploading of grades in AISIS.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rate Doc Buenafe a 4/10 (to the keen Pisay alumni, this is equivalent of a 4.0/cuatro). She's a nice person to be around with, not so much when it comes to teaching and your learning experience is heavily reliant on 3rd party sources. Just be ready for a rough ride really.

Had her just last year. Imo u rlly dont need to advance review lol plz enjoy ur break. But in all honesty, her exams seemed to have been adjusted (?) cuz our batch didnt exactly feel it was too difficult; however they were very confusing and meant to challenge you on an elementary basis (that is think of simple question about a concept that’s made difficult or tricky). Best way to get good grades on her is to score excellently in quizzes and the 2 major exams cuz those r literally the only assessments/source of grades u will have the entire semester (apart from prob sets). I suggest dont overthink cuz it didnt do me good hahahaha. Just understand the basic concepts of what she teaches really and try expanding on those by experimenting different problem situations

if u dont polish up on your genchem skills you will get super lost in her class since di niya dinidiscuss ulet even if it's js for clarification :') light workload if ur disciplined (we had 1 quiz lang for the whole sem + 1 take home problem set per module pero its due during finals week) overall, expect to rely a lot on self studying since she only scratches the surface during lectures. try and find out yung mga resources na gamit niya since there isn't a lot na pinopost niya sa canvas.
one problem i had also was the exam doesn't really align with the lectures as much or atleast not explicitly (again she scratches the surface and relies on u and ur resources from god knows where to actually gain a deeper understanding) i rmb having to use the henderson-hasselbach equation which iirc she didn't discuss and good thing na i remembered it from my lab class or there's no way i would know :')
if you expect to be able to keep track of your standing in class, i'm going to hold your hand when i tell u this....haKJHJASh she doesn't return work and if she does it's super duper late (we only got our midterm grades after taking the finals, tapos when we got our advisory grades dun lang namin nalaman ung score namin) you would be forced to have to do well in every single assessment kasi there isn't a lot (again, we had 1 quiz through out the whole sem, it was the sole basis ng advisory grades namin since by the time they were given out yun palang yung naaccomplish namin lmao and yes saka lang namin nalaman yung score namin when she gave out the advisory grades).
also she doesn't send ppt slides, you have to take pictures/notes in class if u want a copy of the slides lol.
overall: B-able with lots and lots and lots of effort T_Tmore

when i had her for anachem lec for intersession, inulit niya lahat ng lt mulcho non tas cinompile para gawing finals pero mababa pa rin grade namin 🫠
chz pero she’s arguably much more passable under an anachem course i would say !! she did have reasonable ppts + probsets given per module but i would say that having supplementary mats (skoog i tink yung main ref b4?) would help a lot in navigating the topicsmore
