Take Caslib for PHILO 13 if you want conversational Ethics lectures and can work from a paid physical reading packet with no gadgets and an end-of-term annotation check. The one writeup calls written tests A-able if you listen. Lean away if you need LMS-only readings or device-in-class notes. Sample is one writeup, so this is lean_take rather than take.

LOVE HIM PERSONALLY !! I had doc this sem for Philo 13 He provides printed copies of the readings, which you do have to pay. But you have a lot of ample space to take notes and to annotate what you read. As a note, you are required to annotate your readings, as he takes note of your notes at the end of the sem. If you are already the type to annotate, you’ll be fine. He gives ample time for you to read the readings, but it’s still a lot, so be prepared for a pretty heavy philo class. Doc uses both the readings he provides you and the lectures that he uploads on Canvas. So be sure to review both, esp for the pre-lecture quizzes. Doc also loves to share stories with the class and ask us abt our lives. I personally love profs who do this, so I rly liked his classes. It also eased the tension that his initial strictness sets up. Doc would esp ask us to share our experiences and use them as examples that we could use to review moral theories and dilemmas. Be aware that his quizzes are objective type! They’re all multiple choice, so read the readings and review his recorded lectures well. The pre-lecture quizzes are onsite while the post-lecture quizzes are online. Doc will occasionally vary the style of the pre-lec quiz—sometimes you need to bring out 1/4 sheet of paper and sweat yourselves with answering on your own, and other times, you take the quiz as a group. I only ever recall having an essay once or twice. On the midterm and final: midterm is oral while final is objective written exam. For us, he made us pick out a random card that asks a random question. What I got was something like, “What is something that you would get an Olympic gold medal if it was a sport?” And Doc will use your answer to lead you to a question about what you learned in the modules so far. Sometimes he may connect with your answer with his own experiences, and then use that as basis for his question. Super fun, and it rly showed off his intellect. Final exam, you really have to review that because it can trip you up. I only got a good score because he added bonus points 😂 Very good class overall, I honestly enjoyed it, even if it was heavy hahaha. Very B+ able prof while being engaging !more

Hi! I had Doc (don’t call him sir lol) last sem for Philo 13 :)) TLDR; terror prof in theory, not in practice. B/B+ with effort! When you first meet Doc, parang feel na feel agad yung intensity niya as a professor? Medj strict siya with attendance, grading, etc. but he’s a very nice prof who will listen to his students (for the most part). Madali lang kausapin pero you won’t always get what you want out of it ? HAHAHA Sample lang, one day we were asking Doc if we could reschedule a quiz cause of certain situations, tas it looked like we were able to convince him naman, tas nagpalit isip niya bigla and we took the quiz anyways … HAHAHA Back to the point, if you do get Doc, my main advice would be to read all the readings thoroughly and write notes. All the answers to the quizzes are in the readings (make sure you listen carefully kasi may trick questions) and they also prepare you for his graded recitation (either round robin or alphabetical). Tas even kapag nag 0 ka sa recit, u can make bawi by raising your hand at the end of class. Also if you don’t get called during days na may recit, instant 3 points ka na. You have one orals also for finals, out of 12 thesis statements random siya tas parang conversation siya, Doc will give you leads to where you’re supposed to answer, pero ikaw talaga sasagot. Next tip, kausapin mo si doc, like conversationally during class. Doc likes to make a lot of chika eh during class, sometimes it ties to the lesson, sometimes it doesn’t HAHAHA but it gives you a good enough avenue to create a connection with Doc that may or may not help you both in the class and in the future. I sat in the front row so lagi kami nagjjoke with each other and it helped me stay more engaged in the class. Overall, not an easy class, but if you are willing to learn and have the time to thoroughly read through all of the provided readings, you’ll be okay. Personally, I learned a lot from his class, both through the readings and through the lectures so I would recommend !! If you have any questions, feel free to PM me 😁more

took him 2nd sem last year! doc may seem like a terror prof especially because of his strict rules regarding cellphones, note taking, etc. but i never regretted taking his class and consider him to be one of my favorite profs. despite being a flipped classroom (lecture videos on canvas, discussions onsite) u can tell doc caslib is really knowledgeable about the subject and he cares for his students! though most of the session is taken up by personal anecdotes, and sometimes he asks students whats up with their lives😭 i still found myself learning a lot with the way he discusses things. for workload, its a lot, he gives all the readings printed at the start of the semester, and u are expected to read and annotate (he checks at the end of the sem) and there will be objective quizzes after each section of a chapter (i.e. names of theories, names of people etc.) as well as grp activities (he made us perform a taylor swift song and relate it to ethics 😭) a mulcho midterm and finals about different ethical dilemmas and orals for the midterm as well! just wanted to explain the midterm more cause i really loved the way he handled it. he made us do an “info sheet” with different personal questions, and he would relate the thesis u picked for the orals to some of your answers in the info sheet! i had a really fun time with his orals as the questions he gave may sound random, but he gave insights about it too which i really appreciated. overall, i really enjoyed his class and especially doc! though the workload was hard and tedious at times, for me its worth it to take his class! enjoy! p.s. he said he doesnt curve but when i calculated my grade it was a B but it ended up being a B+ in aisismore

Agree. Sometimes he does flipped classrooms din where he will give you asynch days to read the readings which I appreciate. Most onsite days are usually plenary discussions and application of the concepts via small groups. Also groupings are random. He's nice and approachable naman but very high expectations so be ready to exert effort if you want a high grade. Also loves to kwento during onsite classes hahaha.more

im not entirely sure but sir showed everyone’s grades in class, just that it was the id numbers and not the names so there was some anonymity. based on those (accounting for the last assessments he hadnt added in then) i think the class average is a B. so to be more accurate, easy B-able prof, B+ able too but u do have to put in the work. idk if anyone got an A but i was close to it 😩 so an A is possible! just note that in his syllabus, A is 94more

Super chill!!! Class is basically him making kwento a lot while incorporating the lessons into them (tho sometimes he gets carried away and just makes kwento his life HAHA) Also few requirements lang. Few surprise quizzes about the readings (4 questions, true or false), 3 papers, 1 LT, and then orals (which is also super chill). He likes and remembers people who recite and sometimes calls on random people for recitation about the readings, but he didn't seem to hold it against you if your don't know the answer. Also curves, I think. My pre-final grade was around a C, but in the end I got a B+:) GET HIM!!! anything to add? HAHAHAmore

Many students boast about having profs like Ambeth Ocampo and the likes and praise them for their teaching style. I’m here to say that Doc is one of those profs where you will love every session. True that there is random recitation, alongside a massive book filled with ethics notes you have to study. Also true that his orals are really hard. Even with this, however, his classes are engaging, out of the box, and is extremely conducive to learning. Expect him to yap and catch up with his students for the first 30-50 minutes, talking about people’s lives, his life, and whatever is happening in society. Then he’ll proceed to discuss quickly, connecting his early yap sessions with the ethics lessons. Though there are random recitations, for the entire semester, we really only had them thrice or so. The rest were just 5 to 10 point quizzes that were identification. Even with a bad oral examination, he definitely curves the class! Expect to love him by the end of the semester!more

HELLO I was his beadle for his onsite class! AMA He's B+ able and he provides readings for the class naman. Heads up that it's a Lot of readings. Be reassured that he publishes his pandemic-era zoom lectures on the topic on Canvas. During my sem in his class, he gave us a lesson plan sa syllabus pero di naman sinundan. He's a very passionate prof with high expectations, really and in a lot of onsite classes he makes the class huddle into smaller groups to discuss a part of the lesson and present it. Maraming class group activities. also expect that you will be asked about personal ethical dilemmas I.e. traumadump a lot, sociopolitical awareness is also important for this class so yeah keep caught up in social issuesmore

gonna copy paste this from my previous review on him in the online setting hehe would not recommend him for the online class setting. i dont know what everyone else is saying, but he's very intrusive with online classes, pointing out random things in your backgrounds and calling out your miscellaneous stuff. his quizzes are weird and "objective" (but...it really isnt). overall a wildcard to take the quizzes HAHAHA. he's very particular, hates getting emails, hates extra 'unnecessary' work, and his synch classes consist of a full hour and a half of kwentuhan (from him only) where you ask questions and he answers. no audio visual aspect to it. got a good grade in the class and i learned naman (though i read all the rdgs), but would NOT recommend for the tribulation that you go through for it :| especially since random pa lahat ng groups so if ure with crammers, good luckmore
