Intersesh: recit, surprise written, 50/50 project

took him intersesh (sy 2025-2026) - grading was 50% active participation and 50% creative project - active participation comes in recitation during his lectures, 3 socratic discussions, and his (surprise) written participation based on the readings so u have to come prepared/have read the readings before going into class. he also posts announcements sa canvas sometimes kapag he notices na we didnt really read the readings based on our recit answer. but he gives the syllabus on the first day of classes naman that contains the dates and the readings/what activity you’ll have for that day. - for socratic discussions, it’s a round table discussion wherein there will be discussion guides (you can volunteer to be one). the rest of the class will try to answer the questions/prompts the discussion guides prepared and keep the conversation going. so si sir will mostly listen lang and take notes but he’ll sometimes interrupt and comment things like “that’s an interesting question” etc. alsoo he doesn’t like dead air so just be mindful of that. it’s also open notes, open everything haha. - his lectures are saks lang. you don’t have to take notes for his class but i found the lectures interesting. he also dismisses the class early if he’s done na with lecture and if there are no more thoughts/questions. - creative project is basically any project basta you can apply chinese art and society to it. you also have to get these approved by sir before proceeding + you can do it individually or by group. some people did workshops, vlogs + i did a food review of chinese food at diff price points around qc which was fun to do! :) - ohh we also did fun activities after each socratic discussion (lantern painting, paper cutting, and tea tasting). tbh para siyang reward after the socratic discussions HAHAHA. i had fun doing those activities too :) - only con lang is he doesn’t give our grades back so you won’t really know what you’re standing is until the grades come out on aisis + buuuut he grades highh - would i take him again? YESSS !! 10/10 prof talaga siya so take him if you can 😁more

[UPDATE] From what information I have received from not only from other students but from Sir Medina himself (I get tea with him from time to time LOL), he has drastically somewhat changed his teaching style leaning into a stricter style but it’s mostly because he wants students that are actually interested in what teaches. Goodluck with future endeavors ^^ [Original] Currently taking him right now! I can't say much for grading yet but so far: Very fun and open to talk to - Sometimes I would follow him back to his office while talking about philosophy or religion and we would talk for 30 minutes to an hour so he's very friendly!! He would also occasionally make me tea in his office too Fun and Creative in class activities - In his class we would have Socratic discussions, lantern painting and tea tasting! Aside from Socratic discussions it was all for the sake of engaging more in Chinese Culture rather than a requirement! Topics and Discussions - I will admit, sometimes his discussions gets a little bit boring. I don't think he discusses a lot about art and it's something I wish he would do. I do feel like there's a lot more to the art he discusses but aside from that a bonus is he dismisses early often. Requirements - A lot of his requirements are mostly class participation and a final project (although take with a grain of salt considering I'm in Intersession) Not heavy at all!! Just do the assigned readings which are very interesting! (especially the book "Wild Swans"). He also notices your effort, and will reward you accordingly!! TL;DR, Very fun and light with creative in class activities, although sometimes unengaging when it comes to class discussions.more

currently taking him and i’d say he’s one of my favorite profs :DD he definitely applies the whole “finding peace and harmony” philosophy to himself because he’s soooo chill. i can’t say much for his grading style because majority of our grade come from class participation and the final project so i legit don’t know what my standing is. my only advice is to sign up as lecture guide because it genuinely has the potential to bump your grade up if ever you don’t get to participate in round table discussions as much. lecture wise, you really have to read all assigned readings because his ppts are just short bullet point of the contents and he doesn’t fully expound on them. we also had a couple periods where we just watched a chinese film and took down notes on important details. he also dismisses really early especially if he’s done discussing what’s needed. one time we got dismissed after 30 mins. i loved his class activities sm because it felt like i was back in high school HAHAHAH. we had a lantern painting activity which was displayed in the chinese department, paper cutting, and tea tasting ceremony. our final project was a group modern media engagement thing wherein people made dumpling making videos, a food crawl in binondo, china travel vlogs, etc. our group went to the chinese garden in luneta and it was fun <33 overall, he’s a very kind and friendly prof. he loves having students over at the chinese department and he’d just chika and make you guys tea. my experience may differ since i’m taking him for intersession but i definitely vouch for sir!! would definitely take his class again 😋more

Unfortunately you don't really know until the end unless you ask him since 50% of the grade is in participation (I would say he grades high but I'm biased since I participate a lot) and the other 50% is in the final creative project (I cant really say how high he grades here cause I am not finished with midsem but you can bump me after the sem is done so I can put it here). But from what I know from other reviews, he grades relatively high. Goodluck with enlistment!more

Fun interactive class, quizzes and creative finals

we were graded mostly from his weekly quizzes and round table discussions, although sometimes these were skipped when we had a class activity (e.g. lantern painting & tea-making). i don’t recall having a midterm exam nor orals. our finals consisted of incorporating the lessons of the course through creative means. some facilitated bracelet-making or chinese calligraphy workshops, while others prepared chinese food. he gave the groups liberty to choose with his approval of course. it really was a fun and engaging class!! the best prof to bring chinese arts and society to life imo since he encourages a more interactive approach rather than merely submitting research papers.more

Hello! Adding to what was said, the readings may feel tedious to you at times especially during the heavier parts of the semester. If it's the same for you, he will include a key question that he will answer during lecture time, this is in the syllabus. If this is the case, I suggest trying to answer the key question before class, then preparing three key concepts that you would like to discuss on your sessional quiz (essay question on a 1/2 pad), regardless of what appears on the test. It's just a technique I used to help me study when I only had an hour or two to prepare before class, which got me As in the sessional quizzes and the finals. good luck!more

hi! if he hasn’t changed his assessments yet, you can expect to answer a question that is SOLELY based on the assigned readings. to study for his assessments, i suggest (ik sir suggests this as well) to always get the essence and “substance” of the readings. lol sir can kind of tell if you didn’t read the readings so please don’t just memorize! goodluck! i personally had a really fun time learning theo w/ sir, you’re in good handsmore

posting this for more info under sir medina! I just took Sir Medina as my Theo 11 prof this sem despite not having any reviews here, & it may be one of the best risks I took! He's a new & young prof who just took up his masters in theo in Yale! (Cool 😆) Because of this, I believe that sir gets to offer the class a glimpse of how an ivy league education is with his assigned readings and teaching style. (Emphasis on readings because it really is worth your time and sometimes perspective changing) He's also very considerate and super ahia vibes! Although when it comes to teaching, he's more on the serious side, but his discussions were very informative and noteworthy. When it comes to grading & workload -he grades fairly, A/B+ able! - light to moderate readings - no out of class work, only quizzes - fast feedback on quizzes - very open to consultations - dismisses the class early Bonus: He gives free tea in his office HAHAHSHAmore

i love sir medina!!! pros: - his lectures r so easy to understand, but you can tell he’s very passionate - lecture slides r so detailed that literally what he says out of his mouth during the lecture, 100% you will see in the powerpoint. so in the case you miss smth, you can just look at his slides - super super approachable, nice to talk to, and (most importantly) very open minded! - lenient, and he’s fast with feedback and messages slight, but tolerable cons: - he doesn’t post his lecture slides, but he allows you to take pictures of it - he has sessional quizzes!!! so make sure to read your assigned readings - BUT! i find his quizzes to be super A-able. A to B at most, haven’t seen anyone with a C yetmore

took sir aaron for csp 71i this sem! i agree with the previous comment about him being a new and young prof^^ this makes him super easy to connect with and approach for consultations. the subject is taught in english so you dont really need a chinese background to keep up with his reqs. each session consists of lectures, a short quiz, and a round table discussion on the assigned reading/s for the day. don’t worry though, the readings are really easy to digest and were actually very interesting!! overall a really good prof and a very chill class! would def recommend him hehemore

such a gem, honestly : ))) I had Sir Medina for the same class, and even without any prior connection to Chinese heritage or background, I found myself deeply intrigued throughout the course. the subject itself is very well-balanced — I took his Wednesday class (which ran for 3 hours) but it never felt dragging! he has a great sense of pacing, usually mixing lectures, activities, and roundtable discussions in a way that keeps you engaged what really stands out is how he connects with the class. being a young prof with fresh perspectives, he brings a lot of insight while also making space for student voices. his activities aren’t just fulfilling academically — they’re also personally reflective. I’d definitely recommend taking him if you get the chance!more
