Ain't for the weak: quizzes every meeting, read EVERYTHING

I honestly learned a lot from this class, but to be honest with you taking this ain't for the weak HAHAHA. We used to have quizzes every meeting (we meet once a week kasi 3 hour class siya idk lang this year), lowk easy cos everything can be found sa readings but yun yung con, you have to read everything and when i say everything....i meant EVERYTHING HAHAHA. We also had a longtest/midterm exam na pen and paper and let me tell you sumakit kamay ko bc the second part was essay type na mahaba. Yung first part super keri like kaya iperfect, its the essay talaga na mahaba (easy din but mahaba it will take up your time talaga). We also had a group presentation. Tip ko sa inyo here, go straight to the point as in yun gusto ni Ma'am. Dapat balanced ang content and visuals and syempre best if you dont have a codigo. The presentation is also strictly timed so make sure to practice beforehand. For the last requirement, it's a synthesis essay. You have to apply lessons from modules along with personal experiences and reflection. Dapat balanced din dito since Ma'am is strict with that as well. I know it might seem scary kasi puro requirements but this is one of the classes that I really enjoyed. Super dami ko natutunan and Ma'am is very open talaga even in sensitive topics. Super ganda ng mga discussions namin every time. Ma'am also tries her best to answer our questions and even shares her personal experiences. She is also very motherly and reasonable. It's really a challenging and heavy class considering na IE siya but honestly I really loved it. The readings are worth reading talaga kasi ang ganda niya and very interesting (helped me also in my thesis). Ma'am is also very detailed so hindi ka na maghahanap ng instructions or anything cos she literally posts it right after class, complete and detailed nga. Like the smallest of things (format, citation, etc.) she gotchuuu HAHAHA. Ayun if you really want a challenge, I say take it cos I really enjoyed kahit nasurprise ako sa bigat niya HAHAH.more

Typically SocSc 12 is pre-enlisted, but I got to pick my class because the registrar did not pre-enlist me for some reason. I picked Ma’am Marichi Guevara and I have no regrets. Pros: 1. Gives printed copies of the syllabus, the textbook, and all readings for free. 2. Quizzes are very easy MCQs or T/F where the answers are dead giveaways. She puts the paragraph where you can literally extrapolate the answer, but sometimes the answer is literally in the question. 3. A lot of classes outside the assigned classroom. We started sa B-105 last year but gradually ma’am started reserving Faura AVR more and more until we ended up simply moving in hehe. 4. Massive beadle privileges: as the class beadle, I noticed that ma’am never complained about my group’s presentations and loved our ideas, while she was much more critical of other groups. Our grade ended up being high A while other groups got C to B. So volunteering as the beadle is a HUGE perk. Cons: 1. Very reading and research-heavy. Two group presentations plus an individual synthesis paper, and then a reading every meeting that leads to… 2. Quizzes every meeting based on the assigned readings. Yes the quizzes are easy, but there’s no make-up policy. So never be absent. 3. Sometimes nakakaantok kasi medyo soft voice niya, so sit in front. Overall, a very motherly prof that will make SocSc 12 meaningful in your life. Easy A if you’re the beadle. If you’re not the beadle, B-A with effort provided you make good papers and reports.more

Had her for SocSc12 last year and I loved her. Very organized and very motherly to the point where she’d print your readings for you and provide a textbook. Also accommodating with deadlines. There are a lot of quizzes but they tend to be giveaways MCQs and the paragraph may even be excerpted (e.g. “What theory states that you need to prioritize basic needs?” Ans. Basic needs theory). Our classroom also moved from B-105 to Faura AVR in the middle of the sem somehow lmao. The only downside is that the workload is heavy: apart from the quizzes, you have to do multiple research papers and presentations. The readings are also on the long-ish side, so this is not a class for those with heavy semesters. My main tip is to volunteer to be the beadle, since the beadle tends to get high grades in presentations. My group and I got A in the presentations and Ma’am could not stop complementing our work, but she did have criticisms for the other groups, who would get scores in the neighborhood of C+ to B. Overall, she’s nice naman, but it’s only an easy A if you’re the beadle (or grouped with the beadle). Otherwise expect B-B+ with effort, A if you’re luckymore

Since the other reviews under this post are for SocSc, I want to say that she's great for ids 162.13i! But you have to be good at following instructions and classroom rules. She has a no makeup quiz/exam policy, including for midterms & finals. The assessments are easy as long as you practice your due diligence (aka reading the readings lol). Subject matter is generally easy and there are hardly any lectures because most of the class is film viewing. Only take this class if you genuinely like movies 🙂 if you don't like movies, you won't appreciate it. Easy A for me, but that's coming from someone who already liked movies and was willing to set aside a few hours every night before our weekly session to skim the readings :3more

Updated Review: Ma’am was kind and organized. She provided printed modules and consistently reminded us about meetings, deadlines, and presentations. The readings were informative and relevant, and the quizzes were generally easy, with scores usually returned by the next class. If you're looking to watch a wide range of Filipino films, this class offers plenty of exposure. One downside, however, is that the frequent quizzes (based on 1–3 readings per session) make it hard to use your allowed absences. Also, while discussions are tied to the readings, they can sometimes feel surface-level, with limited chances to explore the films more deeply. That said, if you're looking for deeper critical discussions about the film industry (like me), this might not fully meet your expectations.more

not sure abt IDS, but I have her for socsc 12 rn, shes not the worst but tbh i really dont like her. she is very unclear, very stubborn, and the class style is very highschool. she spends most classes repeating herself. expect 12-15 quizzes over the semester also.more
