At the time I was taking PHILO 13 under him, there were no reviews for this certain course (only PHILO 11) so I'll try to write down my thoughts: As a professor, he's very passionate about what he teaches. I took him under the 6:30PM-8:00PM class and I had a class that ended at 5PM before that so there was a vacant, so I would stay at his classroom sometimes since it was vacant most of the time and he would arrive like 20-30 minutes early and greet us naman. Going into Ethics, I thought it would be just a question if things were right or wrong and how to discern that. The first day of class, he opened with a question about the usage of AI in classrooms (surprisingly, he contributed to that article in GUIDON) and debated with students about the topic and also asked us if it was wrong to steal. I narrate this because his flow of discussions are usually not structured, but not to the point na nakakaantok. In fact, he knows how to grab our attention by sharing some insights from his stories in Naga and such. He discusses these philosophers as if they were actually people, and he would usually make us question their teachings in the readings, if it was truly ethical or not. Assessments-wise, he does do quizzes and it's either announced or un-announced so just be prepared nalang. Read upon the readings (they're usually like 20-30 pages lang naman) and digest the important stuff because that will actually help you sa quizzes niya which are essay type on a yellow pad. I think we had 2 or 3 in the time we took him. We also had a surprise midterm oral exam which is individual, and it was about the compilation of the previous readings so you have to lock in during that. He will ask you a question na parang thesis statement on the spot and you have to answer it as if you prepared, and he will ask follow up questions if he sees that he's not satisfied with your answer.
There was also a midterm take-home assessment and it's not the type where you can just Google it, you actually have to consult the readings and think it through because he grades us kinda harshly on that assessment (yung assessment na yan lang naman) because the answers he was looking for was somewhat surprising but it made sense if you really thought about it. Be sure to be open-minded as mahilig din siya mag bigay ng trick questions. The final oral exams are by a group (or circle) where you are in 3s or 4s, and each members has a chance to answer one thesis statement each and EACH groupmates answers will have an individual score, and he will average it out. It goes like
Member 1 gets 4.0
Member 2 gets 2.0
Member 3 gets 3.0 4.0+2.0+3.0 = 9.0 / 3 = 3.0 That will be your group's final oral exam score. So everyone has to work together talaga, don't let any member fall behind because sila lang talaga makakasagot ng thesis statement na yan, no backups. Personality-wise, very kind prof and considerate rin. He would sometimes hold async classes or online if he has some circumstances like him having to go home from Naga or not being able to make it to Ateneo on time, he will update us naman or the Beadle will announce it. He answers emails fairly quickly as someone who sends emails to him quite a bit. To get a good grade from him (I got an A from him and my background in Philosophy is terrible): Really listen to him, take whatever notes you need, recite recite recite (so he can get to know you better but he gives everyone the opportunity to speak naman), study the readings beforehand because he might give out quizzes on a yellow pad and he will make you answer a few questions in essay type, and he wants CERTAIN ANSWERS but if you were close enough, you get the full point. Talk to him not as a professor, but as someone you would converse with in daily life. Have your own biases and stand by it, Sir loves it when you do that because it shows that you truly do care and he will rebutt you talaga to make sure you don't just choose this philosopher for the sake of choosing it. During my preparation of the final oral exam, I dedicated a whole day just to study the readings again as we were given a list of thesis statements and we had to go over all of them because it would be randomly chosen so we couldnt just divide it amongst ourselves. Dapat lahat ay may alam sa lahat ng thesis statements. Because one mistake can pull down the overall grade talaga of the final exam. tl;dr Easy B to B+, A with a little bit more effort (not to the point where you have to be dedicate your sem to Philo). Very kind and insightful prof, don't abuse his kindness. Would hold night classes but worth it naman to listen to. Would sometimes hold async classes (so you don't need to attend na). Idk if its because of the grade component pero his assessments kasi weren’t easy to ace
• Assessment Wise: He had a few quizzes with readings, if you didn’t read the reading hindi ka talaga makakasagot, you need to both memorize and really understand the reading if you want to ace his quizzes, iirc 2 lang quizzes namin and mostly essay/ short response answers siya (tho this isn’t to scare you kasi I had fun and I’d take him again if I could). Aside from quizzes may midterms siya but it’s a take-home assessment, though be sure na pag-isipan mo talaga sagot mo dito, mahilig si sir sa trick-questions (there was a time yung tamang sagot in one question was for you not to answer it at all HAHAHAHA kaya dapat maganda grasp mo sa topics na tinuro niya)
• Attitude: Sir is really kind so please don’t take him for granted, pangit yung time namin (6:30-8:00pm) so most of us were either bangag due to exhaustion or drowsiness, but sir understood and was really kind, I don’t remember him getting mad at the class tbh, and he’s super engaging! He’ll ask qs (but not in a recitation way) na open ended and he’ll hear you out no matter what you say naman hehe
• Attitude towards beadles: As a beadle he was very kind to me, appreciative towards my efforts and never failed to reply to my emails even if minsan late na ako nag-eemail (though to be fair as stated above, our classes ended late din). If given the chance I would probably be his beadle again tbh
• Tips: I recommend reciting since part din yun sa grade component, also kahit mababa ka sa quizzes its fine, yung manghihila talaga sayo is yung orals and midterms, do note na while sir is kind, he will give you the grade you deserve, so galingan mo kahit in these 2 components lang hehe
Overall, I’d take him again! Loved him as a prof, he’d make you think and sometimes we would disagree with one another but that’s how philosophy is naman, you’re in good hands!:)more

hi! this is an updated review of sir lagdameo after completing philo 13 hahaha
overall, his class + workload is super chill so i rlly recommend taking him! :) very tito vibes, magaan kausap, and nakikinig sa opinions ng class (no wrong answers for him bc for some reason meron at meron siyang like light rebutt/question for you to rlly think and apply the lessons)
his quizzes are easy as long as you read the reading and remember like the important parts. listen to his discussions also since very fruitful din yung discussions niya. the readings could be a bit hard to understand tho but i asked chatgpt and notebooklm to dumb it down for me so i can at least have a better grasp hahaha it kinda helped naman
maraming times na we went online cos he lives in naga and goes back there every week, so its up to you nalang kung paano mo itetake yon (but it was an advantage for me LOL)
his orals are kinda easy also as compared to other orals i had.. basta gets mo yung concept ng thesis statement. may tips din siya on how to do the orals so make sure to integrate those nalang when preparing for it (forgot the tips but isshare niya naman with the class yun). it’s also a grp orals with shared grades so make sure to get good grpmates!
i got a B+ with minimal effort so im pretty sure he’s a-able :)) take him if u have a heavy sem and js want a light core subjecttt di kayo magsisisi hahahahhamore

had him for philo 11.05! though im not sure how his requirements and grading are for ethics, ung masa sabi ko in general siguro is: - grading: very lenient! would not be a stretch to say easy A siya (given that you put in the required effort) - quizzes: usually they’re about an assigned reading and are always announced. they’re always essay type and can be answered (strictly, but it depends) using specific points/sentences from the readings (better if word for word!). quiz scoring is… interesting HAHAHHA but not in a bad way - tips for orals: get good groupmates!! we had group orals wherein one’s performance affects everyone’s grade, so make sure to draft coherent answers for his thesis statements, memorize/familiarize them as well if kaya. cross check with your groupmates as much as possible too. while sir isn’t particularly critical or harsh, getting a perfect score is only possible if you’re able to address all salient points related to your statement. +++ the only downside i felt w dr erick’s class was that we barely had onsite since sir has various commitments in naga (where he’s from), but fully understandable naman! while i felt taking his class was mostly self-studying on my part, his onsite lectures were rlly insightful (when they do take place ofc). kaya mo yan,!more

Very kind and understanding professor. His discussions were really engaging and interesting and he was actually really lenient when it came to my group’s oral exam. Idk if it’s the case for everyone but when we arrived he let me pick which thesis statement I wanted to explain so we were all shocked 😭 originally I also thought the class would be purely about politics pero hindi naman is was very philosophical lang talaga as expected HAHAHA definitely an A-able class.more

hes pretty good! although when i took him last 1st sem, may bagyo sa naga kaya we had a lot of asynch/online classes. good discussions and he rlly preps you for the finals which is an oral exam. I took him for Philo 11. He’s chill but I wasn’t able to experience him as a prof enough because there were almost no onsite classes. If I were given a chance, I would try other profs. His opinions about philosophy are great but I was not able to learn enough from him.
He gave the scores late (others he did not give back) and there almost only one output per grade component although the syllabus indicate more so it was hard to get an A (some of the outputs were not done due to the lack of onsite classes)
Even though my group and I scored very high for the midterms and final orals, we all got a B+more

Had him for Philo 11. Personally loved his lectures despite almost never meeting onsite which can be a benefit if you’re particularly heavy on units. However, his assessments are not exactly easy-A. I would HIGHLY suggest to get good groupmates (preferably people you already know and trust) for final orals because their performance matters for your final grade (another comment here talks about the grade breakdown). You can do really well personally but be brought down by your groupmates if they don’t perform well. Good luck!more

Hi! I took sir for Philo 11.05 and he was a good chill prof. We only met onsite once a week because the other day was devoted for studying the assigned readings. In terms of requirements, we only had a few: 1 quiz, 1 midterm group report, and the final orals. I believe that as long as you’re able to substantiate your points well, he’ll give a good grade as he’s fairly generous with grading. I got a B+ in the end, which included the +10 bonus he gives at the end of the semester.
Take note that orals are by group so your grade will be the average of the individual performances of each of the group’s members
So ex: Member 1 (You): 3.5, Member 2: 3.5, Member 3: 3.75
Grade for each will be (3.5 + 3.5 + 3.75)/3=3.583/4more
