Hi, I took Dr. Strebel for PHILO 12 last 2023–2024 Sem 1. Requirements 1. Module assessments (25%) - 2 of them were online essay quizzes, 1 was a short paper, and 1 is tied to the finals. There are no graded activities done during class. 2. Summary/Reporting (10%?) - Every end of class, he asks two students to volunteer (or if none, he picks them). One student writes a summary of the previous class discussion and submits it the day after, and the other prepares an oral report of the previous class discussion and reports during the next class. - There are more summary/reporting opportunities than the number of students, so when everyone is finished doing one of them, you can volunteer or get picked for a second one, but he gets the higher grade among those two. 3. Group Reporting (15%?) - you choose a group with people who took the same PHILO 11 track as you and report about a reading (that is not discussed in class, but is related to the current module being discussed) 4. Reflection Paper (20%) - there are two movies that he will give you around 3/4 into the semester. you're supposed to reflect on one of them (but prioritize writing about your own experience, not summarizing or squeezing concepts discussed) 5. Finals (30%) - at the start of the sem you'll submit an (ungraded) essay about a question you have about god/religion then for finals you'll discuss via an oral presentation about how your perspective changed/widened, based on the class materials. Others - The class is generally not very participative (maybe since there is no participation grade) - Sir speaks quite slowly in class, but he chooses his words carefully, so malaman and thought-provoking yung discussion niya - Sir posts his video lectures from online class which are good summaries - Sir is an etymology nerd which I enjoyed since I also am one - There are a total of 5 readings only (plus the one you have to read for the report) - There is an ungraded quiz that you have to take at the start of the module before you go to the next parts, it is just one question (mcq or fill in the blank) about the reading (there are 5 attempts) Main con lang talaga with him is, being the dept chair, he has very high standards (but I know someone who got an A). Plus he also grades on intervals of 0.5 lang (so ang laki ng hatak). Wala ring qualitative feedback (he gives back just a number sooo you don't really know where you particularly made a mistake) There's supposedly a criteria for grading in his syllabus but he seems to not follow it. I think he just thinks of the grade and just finds the correct score per criteria (pm me for more info). I think he's B to B+ able, A is hard. I don't know if there will still be batching next sems, but he's ok na for a batch 2 pick. You could end up with worsemore

Hi! Just adding lang to what said here (since he's also my prof for Philo 12 last sem) (1) For the group reporting, make sure na you guys know the content of what you are reporting and hindi lang basta memorization. He knows kung ang sinasabi mo ay of quality or just plain bs. Also, be confident sa pagrereport. Fluency in Filipino is a big +++. Get good groupmates because that reporting comprises 12.5% of your final grade. (2) He's A-able (despite me only having read half of the readings, not joking). I think ung hinahanap niya sa quizzes is more on your skills in tying up lessons he discussed sa onsite class + readings + canvas in such a way na hindi siya parroting. you gotta need to understand what the lessons are trying to teach/impose (3) Medj boring yet though-provoking ang onsite class niya. I always tell to my friends na papasok ako sa class niyang sabog at inaantok pero lalabas na gusto pa ng another hour to listen to his discussions. (4) Give your best sa outputs. Don't bs them--he will know it naman, anyways. Also, give your best sa last three outputs [Mapagmuning Papel, Orals, Mapa]---these three will dictate kung ano magiging final standing mo sa class niya (5) Great choice of readings. Also, para akong nag-take rin ng another 3-unit course ng Language since he's inserting some info/facts about etymology (which I appreciated din) (6) Andami niyang baon na kaalaman. He really knows what he's teaching. (7) If you are confident sa Filipino language, choose the orals repetition than written. tl;dr: very A-able with effort, just be confident with your report. don't bs your work. understand the topics >> parrot/ repeat them. taking his class is very worth it naman for me 🙂more

Actually a pretty nice professor, all things considered. B+ with effort (even then, I remember cramming the movie reflection essay and some of the oral exam prep). Only real gripe I had was the 8 AM class being very early for me, but tbf I had a poor sleep schedule that semester. To survive: 1. Read the readings carefully. While they can be quite long, they are interesting, so take your time digesting them. One thing of note is the argumentation about God, whether He exists or not, and the Problem of Evil. These are very hard to answer not because of Sir Strebel, but simply because they're existential and require careful logic. 2. When I took him, Sir made us watch a movie and do a reflection essay about it. Strictly follow the word count, and be comprehensive in how you apply the philosophical concepts in class. 3. The final oral exam is rather conversational, and you have to illustrate how the stuff you learned the entire semester applied to your own life (ex. what beliefs changed in you). I remember starting it with a song before going into my actual reflections, so at the very least it is not entirely strict. He's mainly strict with the time - 10 minutes presentation, 5 minutes Q&A. One tactic I had was that if there's something I forgot to say in the 10 minutes, I would look for an opportunity in the Q&A to put it. 4. During class, ask questions about how the concepts connect to earlier concepts you discussed (esp. if they sound like they contradict each other) or to other concepts you read about. Not only will this help show Sir that you are participative, but it's good preparation for orals and papers so that you don't get your definitions / interpretations twisted. Good luck!more

If you want a clear and structured lecture, I recommend Strebel. He just talks and questions are encouraged (but not graded). He explains things simply and makes you get it. Hard to get high grades but not impossible! Do well in his quizzes so read up.more

sir strebel speaks filipino and will help you find the word/teach it to you when you recite and have to dip into english. he's p nice tbh. just do your best to speak and write in tagalog, though afaik he doesn't give you demerits for writing a word in english naman.more

. the usual mean for our outputs back then (based on canvas) are always around 2.5. he's also kinda nitpicky haha 💀 when he says one page, you really have to fit it in there or else, may deduction. he also doesn't accept late outputs. he told us noon na automatic F (?) unless you have super valid reason. 2. yea, you can naman. 3. we had orals noon, and you go with your groupmates (but solo yung orals). you just have to go together because ateneo have this rule na a professor and a student cannot be left alone together daw. but if you're not comfy, you can let him know and he's willing to do special arrangements naman. He's really passionate in philo, and sana mafeel mo yon in his class (one of the few pros huhu). He's also very open to questions, so don't hesitate to ask. Just avoid comparing philosophers to fictional characters bcs he kinda gets triggered there, lalo na if absurd huhu. It will be very obvious if he gets pissed with your question or recit so 🥲🥲more

He does not fail anyone, regardless of how bad your performance is. The issue, however, is that he likes things the way he taught them. Everything you write in this class must be regurgitated by him, in the same format, sequence, and likelihood. He hates outside sources, so make sure to not reference anything external. All the writings, referenced from his lecture, the way he said it exactly. No more, no less. Classroom isn’t too audible, his voice is pretty soft so you probably wont understand anything since it echoes. Hard A if you’re not competent in Filipino. Personally prefer to avoid. The only benefit is that he does not fail anybody, even if you fail all your assessments.more

STREBEL, Wilhel Patrick - PHILO 12 REVIEW genuinely, take his class. possible negatives - he’s strict with time. you have 15min grace period but it’s a half-cut already. - has surprise quizzes (prelectio), but usually when there’s a new topic, material, or chapter that’s being discussed. - his material is deep, most of the time it’s in tagalog, and you need time to study for it and digest it - he is strict with deadlines, class rules, and ateneo policies. he will really call you out or deduct points from your work if it’s doesn’t follow the hard rules he set. - considerations are hard to get especially if he thinks your reason is valid (he rarely does). he’s insanely disciplined, which is not in your favor if you are not the same. - the concepts are kinda confusing and required u to think deeply, like all philo classes do. you WILL get confused esp if u don’t listen in class - certified yapper - rarely A-able, really specific when it comes to the answers that he wants or how you phrase/explain things positives - he’s kind and polite. he’s lowkey giving grandpa professor vibes - the way he explains the lessons is really good. he will introduce you to the most engaging concepts that you will realize are present in your everyday life, and he will genuinely get you interested in philosophy - his discussion and classroom materials are interesting, he makes a lot of sense, connects what you’re learning to real-life examples and applications and you’re gonna be like “wow that’s so true” - he’s kinda funny - will show you how to compute your grademore

Doc PJ is very kind and lenient. He makes philo of religion relevant and relatable to all (believers and non believers alike). They know their stuff so don't be afraid to ask clarificatory questions. The class might seem boring because (i assume) people are hesitant to participate using filipino. But there is genuine insight behind every lecture. Just be responsible with your readings and get good groupmates and you should be fine! Easy B/B+, A with lots of effort to understand the readings and apply them properlymore

Just had his class and honestly it isnt too bad! I come from a Chinese International School and my filipino is below par, that is why when I took his class, at first I was really nervous. However, as time went on I really enjoyed his lessons, and even though he uses deep Filipino during his lectures. Also, he doesnt count cuts, I cut around 10 times and he never reminded me about them HAHAHAHA. Also didnt study for any exams and missed so many pre/lectos, still got a C. Im pretty sure he curves like crazy. Good luck, I recommend him if you don’t get your first choice Philo prof!!more

Make sure to strictly stick sa readings when writing papers. He gets frustrated when you reference materials outside his given readings. Not sure if he's like this to non-philo majors tho. Also, he doesn't like it when you make your own thought experiments/analogies on papers, won't even explain where you got it wrong, basta DON'T daw. BTW, he also grades attendance. And you can't come out of classroom once you enter because it's disruptive daw. Also make sure to atleast try to speak Filipino even tho you're not fluent. He would appreciate it.more

taking his class for philo 12 and id say that hes really effective in teachingggg, like he really knows his stuff and will definitely make you understand philo concepts! (not sure if this will be the same for philo 13) just attend class and attend to the modules in canvas (which also contains his recorded videos), youll do just fine !! i also expected that getting As in his requirements will be impossible but theyre very much A-able when u pay attention to his lectures (which are great imo, d na ko nagbabasa minsan ng readings kc hes great in teaching them) ^^ pero gets naman if others wouldnt want his style, medyo may pagkayapper (but in an organized way idk 😭) hes strict with time and his guidelines so keep an eye out na lang pero hes very clear with his instructions naman saur ayownmore

Hi currently taking his PHILO 12 class (FIL), so far okay naman 😊 I think yung hinahanap ni sir is paano mo mapaghahalo-halo yung Canvas pages, readings, and lecture niya. ‘Wag mo lang basta ulitin yung sinabi niya sa class, kailangan maintindihan mo talaga yung objective ng tinuturo niya. Honestly, madalas di ko natatapos yung reading niya pero pumapasa naman ako sa exams niya! If u are not confident with Filipino, he’s good sa lecture kasi dinadigest niya talaga yung readings. One of the lenient philo profs out there, he understands if u connect online sa class if may transport strike or bagyo (lalo yung commuter ka!), pwede maggadget (wag lang phone, pwede laptop or tablet), and takes attendance usually 30 mins after the class starts. Cons: Mataas talaga standards niya pero di naman imposible maka-4 sa iba niyang tasks. Mabilis siya magsalita kaya goodluck magnotes, ambilis niya magtransition from one point to another kaya dapat mabilis ka din magtype jusq 😭 Just a pro tip: If confident ka sa Filipino, choose orals repetitio kesa sa written, imo mas mataas siya maggrade sa orals repetitio 😁 Tasks: - 1 exam per module (short exam lang online, sometimes project) - 25% - Groupwork + individual work - 25% - Mapagmuning Papel - 20% - Final orals - 30% As long as you study and atleast skimmed the readings, kaya naman siya ma-B/B+. Need more effort to get A 😁more
