WHAT THE HELL THIS IS A WIN-WIN I only had guelan for fil11, so I can’t review him for an arts related course. In that class he was amazing wtf he had so much insight and his readings were ALWAYS so interesting and unconventional swear ESPECIALLY THE PLAYS (he’s a playwright) so there will probably be a lot of those. In my time, he explained how he did curves (so yeah you don’t need profs to pick to check is he curves because he tells you himself). His lectures are so mindblowing i swear. Everything just keeps building up rather than the lessons/readings being isolated to each other. Its super cool in the end, but the tests got a lot deeper. I was a freshman at the time so i personally couldn’t handle it yet D: I HAD VAN DER WALL FOR TWO SEMS THOUGH FA101 and FA102!! So I can review him under that. First of all he’s dutch which is awesome i swear super amusing/aliw to see him in class ESPECIALLY when he speaks a little filipino HAHA. Super heavy readings but very insightful and interesting! Absolutely NO WRONG ANSWERS in his class, but he wants your thoughts and discussion (but don’t just BS though? Like it should have substance and some basis even a bit on the topic/reading) His workload is super light other than the long ass readings which are interesting if you have enough time (i had theo, fiction writing, and nonfiction writing classes with this so i could only manage a few pages per lesson BUT I DID PRETTY WELL) He grades high unless you really don’t give a damn in his class (we had people sleeping and coming in 20+mins late so just don’t go extreme) but he appreciates people showing genuine interest in his class. He usually questions your answer but that’s not because you’re wrong! He really does that to pursue your idea! Some people say his teaching is boring and others say super interesting and insightful. Disclaimer that I’m for the latter so I’m biased as you can tell. His tests are a mix of objective and subjective, but although there’s memory work, its not history/psych level memory work. Its more of the basic terms and definitions (main ideas that will be mentioned a lot anyway in class! Read once and you’ll probs do alright). For the subjective, as in the writing stuff, he prefers brevity so lucky lucky he usually gives pretty low word count requirements HAHA Best part is his humor HAHA suuuper funny and nonchalant plus he’s more than open minded about stuff promise he is a m a z i n gmore
