▫️groupwork: hone ur editing skills, don’t cram. the reqs are all due in a week and the readings dont relate to them practically speaking (but still read bc he takes note of ppl who recite in sync)
▫️sync: beadle takes attendance. he takes note of recit. there’s a google doc where u can put ur thoughts abt the reading if u can’t make it but u can also contribute there even if u attended (just so he remembers u). he calls out ppl who don’t read the readings and is v passive-aggressive abt it
▫️beadle: records the session, takes attendance, and makes the doc. he’s particular abt the beadle since he thinks ur the TA
▫️final paper: this sem, it was abt filipinoness and the future atenean. make sure u have a central theme, profound writing, and observe language rules. he points out language mistakes and provides suggestions but contrary to the previous comments, he didn’t deduct them naman at least on my paper. the first groupwork tho was a bibliographic entry of possible sources for ur final paper and that one he was strict with the rules.

Just commenting under this post to say that while other people may have had good experiences with him, online or otherwise, I really do not recommend taking Sir Veric if you can help it and if you're in a situation where you legitimately have to skip synchronous sessions at times due to your mental health or other drastic reasons. My father died at the beginning of this quarter and Sir, who (illegally) held attendance to his synchronous sessions to be 40% of our grade, did not excuse me from class despite claiming that he would do so for students who had valid reasons for being absent. In fact, he gave me a makeup task *that I could not get higher than a B+ on* because, according to him, it was still my duty to attend classes as 'extraordinary times call for extraordinary character'. He literally made the entire class mad at him for one reason or another (one of them being that he forced us to buy his poetry book, which was full of sexually explicit content about his own personal life) and we did not find his grading nor his commentary on our final essays helpful. I essentially ended up getting the lowest grade I've ever received in Ateneo as punishment for my father dying. He may be a brilliant scholar and poet but as a person he's the worst prof I've ever had. I've decided not to report him out of fear for crossing paths with him again, as I want to go into academia, so this reply is the only thing I can do to help prevent this from happening to anybody ever again.more

in all honesty, he's a cool dude. although he taught me lit 13 nearly 2 years ago. he knows what he's doing i swear even if it may not seem like it!! he's from yale pa huwaw. he made us read his book called "boyhood" to this day i still don't understand it but i got a B+ for being mediocre in writing as well as just reciting a lot. a lot of readings and probably spent so much money on it OOF but no quizzes and about like 2 or 3 papers and nothing but activities like the ones you'd have back in high school. you'll get sleepy that's for sure but he'll find a way to keep you awake.more

sir was okay. he’s very particular about how you write as in he will deduct points for grammar and punctuation mistakes. most of our reqs were group works and iirc it was randomized grouping. the thing about this class is it finishes early as in parang first 3 weeks and we were already done with 3 out of the 4 reqs so medj mahirap bumawi if mababa ka sa start. Although the good thing is he gives comments talaga and u can consult so u know how to improve. I think you have to really be observant at how he talks and how he writes (youll be required to read his book) kasi mimicking his style will help - well thats how i did it and i think it was a big reason why i got high. He gave us all an A for the last req which was a relief kasi his grading for the first req was so low.
Tl;dr he’s okay, saktong workload lang and saktong difficulty lang, nothing notable. A-able with effort.more

hi ate bianca!! had him for enlit 60 and that class was so sad HEJDJEKS there was no content on canvas bc he solely relied on his synch sessions, which tbh were not at all insightful:// this was a major subject but felt like ENLIT12 HEHDEJJA
his discussions were eh. his readings were a 4/10 for me (in terms of new insights). rlly felt like that subject was wasted on what could have been a great class bc of him.
the only reason why i got a high grade for the class was bc he graded attendance (despite us contesting this) and i happened to attend all the sync classes HWSJWJS
tl;dr not really insightful content, but he seems like a ok person naman. can be condescending at times. requirements were very minimal (but only bc of the suspension of classes). wouldn’t take him if i had the choice 😕 3/10.more

but yeah aside from my personal issues with him, for somebody with such good reviews here he seemed to not exert any actual effort throughout teaching the entire quarter at all. the lectures were of almost no substance and there was zero resources that could help us translate texts apart from them. he has great reception in other classes (including enlit 12 ironically enough) and is supposedly a good thesis advisor so maybe he just knew nothing about translation and balled the entire semester. or maybe he had a boyfriend (who was probably half his age given the contents of his poetry book) who dumped him and he decided to take it out on our section for some reason. who knows. still don't recommend him if you can help it
(also if this is for enlit 81 post-colonial literature is his specialty so he'll probably be a better teacher there but he also called the holocaust 'a white on white hate crime' when we discussed a jewish poets work during our classes so,,,take what he says with a grain of salt if it's about the experiences of minorities he's not a part of rofl)more

One of the best profs ever! He’s very approachable. Sir Veric cares for the students’ welfare, making them focus more on learning and appreciating literature rather than getting high scores (which is why he never gives quizzes). Grades rely on activities, class participation, plus your midterm and final exam. Activities are interesting and fun! You’ll learn a lot from him, honestly.
One thing you should note is that sir is strict with time, which is why you should always check the syllabus since it has the dates for discussing readings. He expects that you have read the text he provides beforehand. He also has high standards for group presentations.more

He’s very chill, also very nice. He’s passionate with what he’s teaching. He’s also very approachable and caring. He barely gives any quizzes. Like legit, I just had him for intersession and we didn’t have quizzes at all. We even went to CCP to watch several short plays. He held some of our classes in Arete.
Overall, one of my favorite profs in Ateneo. He made me appreciate literature more.more

He expects you to know the readings and will take note if you don’t. It’s also really good to participate in discussions cause that’s pretty much all you do in class. To pass time, tally how many times he says "uhm" in the class. I think I reached 500+ once, In a 1 hour class. No kidding.
But putting that aside, he's really knowledgable and passionate about literature. He graduated from Yale (I think? basta it's a prestigious school int he US) so he's super woah, and has pretty high standards. You may go back to grade school seatworks though. I had him for Lit14 and he once made us draw our interpretation of a poem in manila paper as a group work. :)more
