Just commenting under this post to say that while other people may have had good experiences with him, online or otherwise, I really do not recommend taking Sir Veric if you can help it and if you're in a situation where you legitimately have to skip synchronous sessions at times due to your mental health or other drastic reasons. My father died at the beginning of this quarter and Sir, who (illegally) held attendance to his synchronous sessions to be 40% of our grade, did not excuse me from class despite claiming that he would do so for students who had valid reasons for being absent. In fact, he gave me a makeup task *that I could not get higher than a B+ on* because, according to him, it was still my duty to attend classes as 'extraordinary times call for extraordinary character'. He literally made the entire class mad at him for one reason or another (one of them being that he forced us to buy his poetry book, which was full of sexually explicit content about his own personal life) and we did not find his grading nor his commentary on our final essays helpful. I essentially ended up getting the lowest grade I've ever received in Ateneo as punishment for my father dying. He may be a brilliant scholar and poet but as a person he's the worst prof I've ever had. I've decided not to report him out of fear for crossing paths with him again, as I want to go into academia, so this reply is the only thing I can do to help prevent this from happening to anybody ever again.more

He made us write original poems and put them down on paper using magazines. As in cut out every single letter from magazines. ugh. -_- lit14 yun tho

Hii, I think this is Doc Veric's first time teaching this elective if I'm not mistaken as someone who took it last school year :oo But yeah, at least in my postcolonial lit subject rn, I'd say Doc Veric's fun but not really an easy A. His assignments' instructions tend to be really vague until you have your consultation with him (pls don't skip this too cause this helps a lot), where he explains his specific standards for each of them. He's accepting naman of your ideas and suggests ways to improve. His workload is also pretty manageable too with a lot of them being groupworks in class + a period of time to work on the final reqs. But yes, basically consult your assignments a lot with him and you'll be goods right there :>>more

▫️ reqs: 5 modules, each with groupwork. the last module requires an individual essay. the groupwork is mostly art related, not really writing so u have to have a good grasp of culture-related things ▫️groupwork: hone ur editing skills, don’t cram. the reqs are all due in a week and the readings dont relate to them practically speaking (but still read bc he takes note of ppl who recite in sync) ▫️sync: beadle takes attendance. he takes note of recit. there’s a google doc where u can put ur thoughts abt the reading if u can’t make it but u can also contribute there even if u attended (just so he remembers u). he calls out ppl who don’t read the readings and is v passive-aggressive abt it ▫️beadle: records the session, takes attendance, and makes the doc. he’s particular abt the beadle since he thinks ur the TA ▫️final paper: this sem, it was abt filipinoness and the future atenean. make sure u have a central theme, profound writing, and observe language rules. he points out language mistakes and provides suggestions but contrary to the previous comments, he didn’t deduct them naman at least on my paper. the first groupwork tho was a bibliographic entry of possible sources for ur final paper and that one he was strict with the rules. ▫️ book: there’s a free one in rizlib. read the book i think it makes some good points to cite sa essay mo, but overall u we didn’t use it until the last part ▫️grades: returns work punctually and gives comments. idky nadelay grades namin sa AISIS tho. put in a lot of effort in ur groupwork and you’ll get an A. no numerical grades just letter grades ▫️workload: reasonable, well-spread out. don’t cram❗️more

im not sure if his teaching style is the same for other subjects pero last sem i had him sa enlit 12 (onsite), and the workload is very light (only 4 major tasks would make up ur grade & 10% participation based sa syllabus). the readings are also short as in one page yung iba HSHAHAHHSHAH, and he discusses them really well, never aq inantok sa class niya. as for essays, he's hypercritical sa grammar, and sometimes, his comments... MASAKET, so it's important to follow what he wants during consultations. as for group projects, bihira lang may maka-A, so he usually gives a B. So you really have to put a lot of work, like critic each other's parts. keri naman A/B+ with effort!more

enlit 82 is a new subject although granted i'm biased but genuine question, do you want somebody who brags about going to yale every five seconds, who has an obviously fake half-british half-american accent, and who called the holocaust a 'white on white genocide' (yes) teaching post-colonial literature lolmore

To pass time, tally how many times he says "uhm" in the class. I think I reached 500+ once, In a 1 hour class. No kidding. But putting that aside, he's really knowledgable and passionate about literature. He graduated from Yale (I think? basta it's a prestigious school int he US) so he's super woah, and has pretty high standards. You may go back to grade school seatworks though. I had him for Lit14 and he once made us draw our interpretation of a poem in manila paper as a group work. :)more

First off: He says "Um" a lot. You get used to it. Groupworks are his class activity of choice, so you'll really get to know your classmates. He will give quizzes when he senses the majority didn't read the reading, but if the class is alert, he'll usually launch straight into discussion. Class requirements for Lit13 usually just boil down to those and two papers - one objective essay and one creative piece. They springboard from the assigned readings. He has pretty high standards for the first one, but he tends to ease up a bit on the second. There's also a comprehensive final exam at the end, but open readings for those. For Lit14, it's a creative paper and the poem-writing, magazine-cutting project from hell. Not sure if he still does it, but prepare coffee. His reading choices are pretty solid, and you can tell he's very passionate about the subject. He gets lost in his train of thought sometimes, but all in all, he's a good prof.more

Hi! I took sir Veric last year for both Lit 13 and 14 and he never made us make a poem out of magazine snippets, so unless he changes his mind, I don't think you'll have that :). As for his discussion topics, they're really interesting! And his tone will usually keep your attention throughout most of the period. His quizzes are all objective (whether you're handling poetry or not) so always take notes on the readings! To sum it all up, he's a pretty good prof and A-able just make sure you read the readings in his readings schedule (sometimes, he wont announce when you need to read something, it's expected of you) and recite in his class and you'll be good. 👍more
