I had Barbaza for an English PHILO 13 (new core equivalent of PH 104) during Q2 and he’s decent naman for an ethics professor. His requirements were manageable, with 4 5-item quizzes (20%), a group presentation (10%), mid-course conceptual elucidation (20%), individual thesis formulation (20%), and an oral exam (30%). In assessing the rest of the requirements, he provides a letter grade instead of a numerical one. Despite getting favorable marks, I was confused with my progress in the class because he doesn’t seem to explain his grading criteria very well. Though a consultation might help you understand his justification, and in a way, his expectations for you as a learner. In terms of deadlines, he's been considerate to his students and adjusts whenever necessary. For submissions, he notified my group — the day before the submission of grades — that he was unable to access our group presentation video. Yet he neither penalized our tardiness nor our oversight in making the video accessible to him. Nonetheless, my group got a favorable grade for it. For orals, it’s very casual. He lets you conceptualize your thesis statement, and he shows great curiosity about what his students philosophize. If you prefer conciseness (200-300 word count outputs), then he might just be the professor for you. Definitely A-able, though I believe I got mine because he’s inclined to favor outputs that have a political philosophy aspect to ethics/moral philosophy. Hope this helps :D :Dmore

No 2 Raftery I cried in the banyo cause I thought I was failing Philo (as in fail na F, hindi "fail" na kaya C, C+) until someone told me that he follows the European grading system so I asked and his A is an 85, F is a 50. Even if he grades in a way na sana DL na tayong lahat if everyone followed it, his LTs are supposedly (i say supposedly cause he didn't know finals week meant final exam week and not final lecture week so we had to adjust) 25% each so 3 LTs = 75% of your grade and 18 points each as mentioned above, so each point would be more than 1% of your final grade. Also, his tests are formatted so ugly. It's multiple choice and it's like this: 1. Question i. blabla ii. blabla iii. blabla iv. blabla 2. Question i. blabla ii. blabla iii. blabla iv. blabla 2. Question (he repeats/forgets numbers sometimes) a. blabla b. blabla c. blabla d. blabla if you're medj OC like me, his tests will upset you just because of the formatting. I can go on about this Philo experience but yeah just don't subject yourself to thismore

hey im back ,,,, honestly did not expect to get an A from him but yay! he was not in my list of choices but im still glad i got him! workload was super light: 4 online quizzes, 2 long tests, group video presentation, own thesis statement + orals tips for the long tests since they take up a huge bulk to your grade is to just listen during his lectures but dont just copy his wordings and add your own personal insights (but ofc still be factual) i think class avg for the lts were C+ to B+ (?) i guess cons is he didnt really give grades back for the presentation and orals. and for the lt he doesnt have a clear breakdown for the scores but if u approach him he can explain to u why you got that grade! i wld still recommend him tho since his workload is light and he’s a nice prof! though i did feel like the lectures were sometimes repetitive but helps with retaining lessons i guess lol! (just dont anger him coz he’s kind of matampuhin if ure noisy or if he notices na the class isnt listening 😭)more

HAHAHAHAHAHA Sorry I had him for 101 Lang.... pero he was easy A cuz no orals and all papers. Just make it really long and refer to the texts and make sure to read them beforehand. He has a temper but as long as you're not in his line of sight he probs won't call u. Just be ready for recitation and long rants. But he's easy in terms of requirements. Not sure how he'll be for 104more

I had Raftery-Skehan for Aesthetics. I don't really think this is a fair assessment considering that I am a Philosophy major so he was really expecting a lot from us. But my experience with him, he had very high expectation. Most of our class got below B. You will definitely learn a lot from him. But expect him to have high standards. Again not sure if this is valid since I took him in a class for Philosophy majors.more

Fr. Que is a really nice professor. He gives great and insightful lectures (I personally loved it) and he's organized. You will enjoy his readings because he gives out the reading assigend and then he has a supplementary reading (written by him) that actually is SUPER HELPFUL. He doesn't have a lot of requirements. He only has 3, Quizzes/HW (20%), Midterms (40%), and Finals (40%). We didn't have any quiz but only a paper so that was where our 20% was based on. For the midterm exam, it wasn't too difficult and it was manageable but you have to really show that you understand the situation. He'll give you a case study to understand. The finals, he gives 10 thesis statements, and you'll have it at his office (Xavier hall). He's really nice. Overall, I do suggest taking him because I learned a lot! He grades high actually and it is unlikely that you fail. Listen to him and you'll do great :) Hope this helps.more

Kimberly Ng from what I remember she is very motherly and understanding of circumstances, she will grade you fairly on effort and performance in class. She explains well and uses a lot of examples from her medical and business ethics consultation experience. I remember there was an exam. If you are grade conscious, you will prolly get a B~B+ with adequate effort... Though tbh, this reference was from half a decade ago.more

I took Barbaza's Fil Philo class, and the bottomline is that if you're really comfortable using Tagalog for academic discourse, then his class will be an absolute breeze. His LT questions will be answered in class before the actual LT, so there's no need to worry about it. He is rather critical in grading though, so exercise extreme care in defining the terms in your essay. His final oral exam is super chill. It doesn't even feel like an exam because all you have to do is talk about the final paper which you wrote beforehand, and answer some rather easy questions. He conducts his lectures in a clear manner. Honestly, provided you devote your full attention in class, you won't need to read the texts in great depth. He doesn't give quizzes, but reciting in class a lot will help your grade. He is a Batch 2 prof (I think) but among all the Batch 2 profs, his slots tend to run out the fastest.more

Deins Raftery... he's not used to our "Asian" english, so when you use long words he'll just stop you and tell you you're not making sense... He thinks his class gets everything he's saying.... wala siyang flow as a teacher either, so you don't fucking know whether he's making kuwento, making a side comment to himself or even asking a question.......more

quizzes for each module (we had 4 modules and it may change next sem tho), then 2 short 200 word essays (one midcourse and other is indiv thesis formulation), then a recorded group presentation! It’s one synch sesh per module and if he cant conduct a synch sesh, he’ll use prerecorded lectures from previous classes!more

Agree^ Just don't do it, each time i had to attend class i left feeling super pissed off cus he talks a lot of shit, but if you do end up with him i suggest recording some of his lessons so u can just transcribe what he says for your final papers cus from when I took him he required 15 pages MINIMUM, as in if you do 15 pages lang its an automatic D HAHAAHA tangina so you're gonna have to pass 2 30+ page papers but its not that bad as long as u record him. But yeah easy A tho just super fucking hasslemore

Unsure about 104 but in 101-102 a bulk of the grade was papers (2) and the orals (we had a group one and then a final midterm exam). All of which he gives ample time and returns promptly naman. Submission for papers is class time tho. As long as you hit the key points and add insight, thats an assured C/C+ He's not very big on recitation though since he likes to talk mostly but he'll open the floor of course for questions.more

Super chill workload. Readings are 20-40 pages total per topic and can last 2-3 weeks of discussion before the next readings are assigned. We only had 2 or 3 quizzes the entire sem. Other than that, it was pure discussion. Class can get boring sometimes because of his voice but as long as you listen, engage and ask questions, it can be pretty interesting depending on the topic. Midterms and final orals comprise 70% of your grade so it's really hit or miss but he grades fairly. I got a B+ final grade without reading much of the readings so it's definitely possible to get an A if you participate and do well in the two main components.more

^me too. I have to admit, he was pretty hassle. but, looking past my inconveniences and his anger, I learned so much from him. he was able to challenge traditional notions of certain philosophers with compelling arguments that’ll really make you reflect. I think the best part of his course was his discussions on Foucault. He’s not just an angry man ranting about the world because his insights are actually pretty valid and are mostly just reiterations of Foucault and his worldview he’s not for everyone because his teaching style is so unorthodox and he has a short temper, and that’s understandable... but you can definitely learn valuable things from him.more

life changing prof, show that you listen & actively engage and he will remember you, he appreciates a discussion about the philosophical ideas. - you must not only understand the readings well but also input your own ideas and thoughts regarding each lesson for long tests and the oral exam - do not BS he can smell it from a mile away, he knows his lessons inside out (uses ppt and his experiences, no gadgets for us) - he mentions many of his experiences during his lessons (he studied in Germany + very outspoken on current political/social issues of the world), very insightfulmore

if you dont feel particularly inclined toward philo, DO NOT get him as a prof. during lectures, he continually discusses but not everything he says is on the ppt. kinda hard to follow also since he just talks the whole time. anyway, when it comes to any assessment, his standards are CRAZY HIGH. as someone who likes to overachieve, i got a C+ (the mean grade i think). for papers, he’ll give most a C+ and not give any feedback as to why. as for orals, if ure not able to express like a true philosophical person or if he finds flaws in your thesis statement, dont expect a high grade. but if you are philosophical, you’d probably like it.more

Online quiz (10-item objective questions on Canvas) and onsite quiz (1-2 questions essay) per module. No recitations but volunteering and answering helps to make him remember you in class. He tends to wander in his discussion so you have to concentrate and pay attention talaga. Then of course, orals and a video presentation (by group) for finals. He's not that open to other interpretations but his own (but it's Philosophy and he's the Philosophy expert between the two of us so I can't complain) and he really looks for a specific answer. I personally found it hard to gauge what answers he wanted sa essay-type quizzes. The orals was just 30% me answering the questions and 70% him explaining them and how my answer was correct/wrong (both a blessing and a curse LOL). He's not the worst choice, but if you're not in the right mental capacity to take Philosophy seriously this semester I suggest you choose another professor. His class looks for a deep, profound understanding of the topics.more
