You are in good hands. Teaching-wise, he is one of the most methodical and structured math profs out there. He is methodical in the sense that he explains concepts in a very comprehensive manner, he does not cut corners in explanation, and no question from students is left unanswered. He is structured in the sense that his class involves explaining the concept, examples (of increasing difficulty), rinse and repeat. He gives harder exams, though it is not a problem MATH 31.1/2 students should worry about since MATH 31.1/2 exams are departmental. He grades fairly (probably a non-math major would think he grades harshly), but the deductions he gives are reasonable. Note that he gives bigger deductions if the mistake is directly related to the concepts taught in class, so practice is key. Mechanical mistakes meanwhile are given relatively lower deductions (so long that the mistake does not gravely affect the final answer). My only nitpick about him would be that he does returns exams very late. Good luck with calc under Sir Chan Shio, and I hope you have a good time in his class!!more

🐐🐐🐐🐐 recommend 100/10 ! took him 1st yr 1st sem (currently 2nd yr) in depth-discussions (he’ll give as much examples as u need) parang kwentuhan lang but math yung topic, workload-wise it’s manageable also! u can bawi sa ibang assessments if u get a low grade sa first few ones (may essay din siya na pwede manghatak-ish ng grades). im not taking a math course so he didnt expect much from us and gets niya na math is not our forte ! quizzes-wise, aral lang ! HAHAHAHA content is pretty much in the discussion but ull rlly have to study or else 👊🏼👊🏼 CHAR cos more on application ng lessons yung lalabas sa quizzes. he grades gewd (imo) ! a-able naman ata siya and b+ w/ medium effort (what i did and got) so yuh! sir chan shio the best very approachable and fun as a teacher!more

Hi! Took sir under MATH 10, arnd 1.5 yrs ago (fully online)! Def A-able with some effort. He’s vv knowledgeable ab the topics & it rlly shows when he discusses lessons w an art/real-life application kind of perspective (which i genuinely found interesting) Didn’t expect much coming to sir’s class, but i ended up w a greater appreciation for math 🤣 tbh one of my fave classes as a freshie, hoping he’s as good or better w calc!more

Hard non-routine questions designed to separate A-students from the rest i.e. the hardest question in the test. I honestly have not answered any of his A-questions on time since they require a significant amount of brain power and creativity to solve (thinking outside the box).more

He is honestly one of the most structured math professors. He will discuss a thing (whether a formula, a definition, theorem, etc), explain it, and provide several examples of increasing difficulty, rinse and repeat. While his long tests are mostly routine, he provides really hard A-questions, so be prepared for it. Hope you have fun, OP!!more

From an alum who also has nearly the same name as Dr. Chan Shio, I can agree with the statements above. V Knowledgeable, helpful, easy to digest solutions. Equal parts rigor and ease. This was back in the old curriculum where Precalculus was a 3-6 unit subjectmore

Had him for calculus tho but he's very approachable and accommodating. B-able with effort. Always answers the problems in tests and exercises. I remember i almost failed his class but his consultations helped me and my grades did a whole 180.more
