Take him if you already have workable math foundations, can follow a prescribed method tightly, and want a traditional lecturer who will actually teach. Prefer a regular semester over intersession. Passionate but don't take without a math background
tldr: he’s decent at teaching the concepts and is clearly very passionate but don’t take him if u don’t already have a decent background in math unless you’re ready to hear a 20 minute sermon every few sessions. if you know math is a subject you struggle with consult asap so he can help u. he’s an okay prof but there are times where the things he says come off as a bit disrespectful in all honesty (he won’t be shy about expressing his disappointment. there was one time he was so disappointed in the overall performance for one quiz we didn’t have a lot of time to prep for that he spent almost half the session discussing said disappointment and said “next quiz, the first question will be 1+1” and lo and behold it really was )he’s good at explaining concepts naman but he expects you to catch on pretty quickly. if by the first or second quiz he notices u struggling he’ll reach out naman to u, but in his words wag mong hintayin na sya lumapit sayo so consult as much as u need to.attendance was honestly kind of meaningless and he only took attendance during maybe the last 5 sessions (this was for intersession 2023), he doesn’t seem to mind too much if ur late as long as u enter discretely but he will have an issue if u abruptly leave class without saying goodbye or smth like that. canvas was almost obsolete in his class except for two asynch sessions whered he’d post about 2 vids a topic (this only happened maybe twice). he primarily uses emails to send practice sheets and announcements so be sure to check your email regularly because what he teaches in those practice sheets normally show up on the test. at least for intersession classes, there were five total quizzes worth 40 pts each and one final group project that he gives u a week or two to work on (grouping is completely at random). his passing grade for quizzes is 50% and he grades pretty fairly, with a few half points every now and then. do note though that he really seems to dislike it if u use your own methods to solve the questions even if they’re correct (he went on a tangent during class stressing that we should follow the methods he gave and pretty much only those bc of smth about us not knowing enough yet and whatnot). he’ll also dock points if you write the answer incorrectly (ex. Df: will be marked incorrect, but Df= will be marked correct).another thing: at all costs, do not miss a quiz unless you really can’t make it. he has this policy where the make up quizzes are considerably more difficult than the original quiz so unless you feel confident in your skills try not to be absent on quiz days. the original quizzes are pretty similar to the practice sheets but the make up quizzes are a lot more difficult and thus have slightly more complex solutions for u to write considering the time limit.i think he’d be a decent prof to take during a regular semester but not as much during intersession. as long as u come to class prepared with your answers from the practice sheets and practice a lot for the quizzes it’s a fairly easy B/B+ with an A being possible with a moderate amount of extra effort.more

okay I am back. For not so important information I did not take him for this but for a waaay higher math, but the review must be the same.
Si sir kasi very traditionalist type of prof ‘yan. Isipin mo nasa isang high school class ka, so bawal ang gadgets, bawal maingay, and very “high school” rules in class. Basically be a decent human being in his class and be interested in what he teaches, like what a decent human being would do inside a class. Kaya lang naman may napapalabas sa class niya kasi naiirita siya sa mga pasaway sa klase, like mapapatanong why would you do that?
Ang forte ni sir, and he’s great at it, is teaching you the concepts. Magki-click sa’yo ‘yung nangyayari sa class kahit na mahirap ‘yung topic. Magaling din siya sa exposition ng mga bagay bagay kapag may i-introduce siya.
So overall, ‘wag ka matakot sa kaniya. Just come into the class like you would in a high school class and be prepared to learn. ‘Yung LTs as mentioned sa Stewart niya lang kinukuha ‘yung mga tanong so aralin niyo lang ‘yon. Hindi naman magic ang mga tanong na kinukuha niya, nakaka-catch off guard lang kung di ka sanay sa mga tanong na ibibigay niya. Go for Garces tayo don’t get scared by the reviews.more

had him last intersession really good prof!! (for math 21 at least) iirc, we had 5 quizzes, one per module. it's going to seem quite fast-paced due to the nature of intersession but do-able i think. there is also a group paper at the end of the sem and i think the topic assigned varies per group! on his teaching, he's what one would label a traditional math prof. no phones, but you can use an ipad for notes. he explains things in a digestable manner and is open to SOME questions. by some, i mean those for clarifying certain things. just don't repeat the same question again and again. he's also quite strict when using the CR, so raise your hand or wait for the session to end 😭 he provides his old exams for practice when there are tests and imo these were harder than the actual tests. you can also email him for any questions and clarifications! sometimes i would do so PWH and he would still reply. overall, good prof for math 21! A-able with decent effort (i didn't study on weekends unlike for math 30.xx) despite the intersession time crunch. he does seem scary but he's very nice 🩷more

I had him for math 31.2. He's very life changing in a sense he changed my life in a bad way. I would say in terms of grading even though you're answer is right, he is very nitpicky. He finds places to minus you. He's a good teacher but then his quizzes are always so hard. I think my block averaged F's as our grade during the first half of the semester of that class.more

While he honestly lives up to his name as being one of the OG terror profs in the math department, he's been a lot nicer these past 2 sems. To get a decent grade you should listen really well to his lessons and take good notes, practice the items in the book really well, and MOST IMPORTANTLY keep your solutions CLEAN. He's a stricler for ugly equal signs, misaligned fractions and will deduct pts off you just because he doesn't like how your solutions was written. Anyways, 31.2 is one of the easier courses in the 31 series so you could really aim for a C+ to B+ in his class. Glmore

taking sir garces for 31.1 rn, can say im kind of getting his style for his exams!
best is to really listen well and do the practice exercises that he gives (and do problems in stewarts calc book)
one good hack to pass his quizzes (40% of our grade) is to really practice his old tests in the LT archive, these are in the folder labelled MA 21 (calc before it was called 31.x), usually these are parallel to the items he will give to us during quizzes
also, no worries for the lts, the review itself for his quizzes is good enough preparation for lts, its true that he hints at what type of problems could be given for lts/quizzes
despite the usual scare in p2p, he really is a good and funny prof as some would say, basta wag niyo lang basagin trip niya lol and he will be happy with ur sectionmore

Have not had him yet, but the other math block had a fun time with him. As long as you listen in class and follow his rules, you’ll be fine since Math 31.2 is (imo) the easiest of the Math 31 courses. Don’t be like the batch below me (the batch above ) or ME students that tend to be mas pasaway or else he will hate youmore
