im late to this but hes a wonderful wonderful prof that id take again in a heartbeat!!!!! i agree with the consensus of the other ppl here in that if you're aiming for high grades (as in tipong a) then you're gonna have to put in some WORK but like. if you're looking for a real learning experience then god has dropped his holiest angel in front of you and you are going to be blessed for the next few months 🕊️🕊️🕊️
his lectures are super super super fun!!! he has a little bit of a penchant for going on tangents but honest to god just let him cook hes always going somewhere with them 🙂↕️🙂↕️🙂↕️ no gadgets allowed in class so you're gonna be writing all your notes down mano y mano... up to you how much you wanna write! personally i was scribbling like a madman on my poor intermediate pad noting down all the concepts and information he was telling us, especially since he doesn't usually use powerpoint presentations + when he does use them, it's very pecha kucha style except instead of pictures it's quotes/excerpts of stuff LOL (also doesnt help that he very frequently namedrops movies and books/authors which id never heard of and now plan to make my way through during this vacation HAHAHA), but honestly as long as you remember the points hes trying to drive home during his lectures you don't have to work yourself into getting carpal tunnel during class
pro tip re: reqs is really to just keep what he's looking for in mind as you write your answers to both the discussion boards (ESP these he's harder on you when grading them) and the onsite essays !!! dont forget to write about the literal (form of the text/what's literally going on inside it) before writing about the literary (your interpretation of the text and what you think stuff represents) !!!! it also really helps if you have a wide reading/knowledge base prior to entering the class because he likes when you get intertextual with it (it being your interpretation of things and how the stuff in the reading connects to other stuff in history, both philippine and world)
also NO MATTER WHAT SUBMIT THE DISCUSSION BOARDS PLEEEKKKKK 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 he does NOT reopen that shit i missed one due to personal reasons and what prolly woulda been a b or a b plus (thats optimistic as Fuckkk but like you get it) shot ALLLLLLL the way down brother to like a 70something bro do NOT make the same mistake i did!!!!!!!!

Tl;dr: overhated prof that you’ll learn a lot from and he’s honesty goated but don’t expect an easy A from him because he REALLY wants to see how you interpret the literature. He really wants to see the quality of your work not just sa content, but also on your proper use ng wikang Filipino. Regardless, he’ll always be my fav Fil prof. WALANG MAKAKATALO KAY DOC COROZA!!!!!
Expect some heavy and in-depth analysis on symbolisms, representations, parallels, archetypes, morals, etc. of various Filipino literature. It’s not enough to give surface level info about the literature or things that can easily be Googled. One thing that I love about sir is his visible interest to see unique perspectives on literatures. He’s not like “I gave you a low score because your analysis didn’t match my analysis of the poem.” He’s really interested to have different insights about a literature. ALSO, HE READS YOUR WHOLE PAPER TALAGA AND HE IS VERY MUCH WILLING TO GIVE YOU FEEDBACK ON YOUR WORK.
Expect that you’ll be yapping a lot sa papers mo. His page or word limits aren’t really rigid. “Kapag marami kang alam, marami kang masusulat.” So expect maybe mga 1000+ words per output. My longest output was 2538 words.
Do note din na “bilang sa kamay” yung times na he gave out an A sa students niya, and he’s been teaching for like 20+ years so yeah, you really have to work hard kasi he’s not an easy pass prof. But promise, you’ll learn a lot from him especially on the proper usage of wikang Filipino. But trust me, you’ll learn it the hard way
Also super fun sa class! He sings and he knows so much poems by memory. Ramdam mo talaga yung emotions niya when he sings or recites poems! but don’t expect lecture type of discussions kasi mostly parang podcast siya.
Also he’s not that strict naman. He’s actually my chillest prof when I had him before. Really considerate prof! (BASTA DON’T ASK TO SHIFT ONLINE BC HE DOESN’T LIKE ONLINE CLASSES). I know he seems intimidating but he’s a really kind and chillax prof! 😎

LONG READ AHEAD! (TLDR: "if you're grade conscious then run" said my one other friend)
• can testify when reviews here say he's overhated! he is very knowledgeable touching on not only literature but philippine history and linguistics in his lectures!
• did 3 discussion boards + comments, and 3 assessments (last "quiz" was a presentation)
• his assessments and final exam were essay-type quizzes that last for an entire 80-minute class period
• his asynch discussion boards are also essays, but he holds your answers to a higher standard than the quizzes. expect to comment JUST AS FRUITFULLY on other people's responses, as you did your own comment.
• used slides for 5 lectures, max; his lectures are more oral but really entertaining!
• didnt do surprise quizzes but the ungraded activities really help with how you approach the rest of his course.
• posts everything on canvas, and expects you to read through them. he encouraged everyone to scan the pages online or onsite
• dislikes online classes during on-site suspensions, had maybe 1 or 2 sessions. BUT he is VERY VERY exciting to have when on-site classes do happen! legit magigising ka
• will challenge your filipino grammar and lexicon! he really reads through your discussion boards and assessments.
• as for extending deadlines, he moved one or two of the deadlines out of consideration during midterms, and some assessment dates were moved due to suspensions.
• expect to do a lot of readings! I read through each required reading, maybe 1-2 per week despite being a 'C scrub'
overall opened my eyes on philippine studies as a whole. it's no exaggeration that he is inspiring enough to motivate you to take Philippine studies, but that's just me. B/B+ with effort; A in his class is very rare but he said one or two of his students for Fili 12 is expected to get an A this first semester. as someone who is more english-heavy, would still love to have doc coroza as my prof again, even if it meant dragging my qpi down! 😅

sa konteksto ng IDS 148 (Great Books IV: Philippines) pang malakasan. Supportive and chill tatay vibes. Hindi easy A, kahit isa ako sa mga aktibo sa klase, B+ grade ko. Yapper about literary chika. Dami connections. Institusyon sa panitikan. Very wise and knowledgeable. Gagabayan ka pag sinabi mong gusto mo magsulat. Magaling kumanta. Kabisado florante at laura. Sabi nya noon pala surprise quiz sya, pero nowadays hindi na (bawal na kasi). If need nyo ng taga workshop, formally contact him lang. Usually talaga onsite lagi classes, pero may times na papayag sya mag-online (if not asynch).
Over all, goated prof. I would like to take his class again. Or at the very least maging protegee sa panulaanmore

yes his standards are high especially as ALL his tests are analysis and subjective. to quote the man himself: “yung huling beses na nagbigay ako ng object style test was in the 90s.”
you might assume he forces one and only one interpretation but I disagree vehemently, as long as you source your knowledge properly, apply intertextuality and truly give an answer that is critically and logically made, you are guaranteed to at least get a B.
lecture wise and as a prof, literally unforgettable. you will love being in his room for the hour and a half he will yap, sing and orate the material. just show effort during this period and a genuine interest in the lesson and you’re set.
he’s very understanding in deadlines but just don’t push his buttons, I really doubt you’ll need to though and besides, he’s very fatherly and genuinely wants you to learn the lesson and appreciate fil a lot more.
he gave quite a few people a prize for some stuff (no cuts, beadle, etc) so look out for that;
finally, highly encourage you to get a good dictionary! it’ll help out alot.more

in terms of gradez, he’s an easy B+. With a little bit more effort, you can get an A easily. His assessments and requirements are light but substantive. They’re easy to get through, but if you put in the extra effort, you can ace them easily
As for his classes, he’s just a joy to have. He jokes a lot, heck he even sings for the sake of it, He’ll make the topics and discussions comprehensible while challenging you to think critically and creatively. You will seriously engage with Filipino literature differently because of sir

HE’S THE GOAT!! I had him this sem as a freshie and while I do agree that he has high standards, in fairness to him I think it’s warranted since he really knows his stuff especially since he’s a highly respected author and critic of Philippine Literature. He’s also fluent in a lot of local languages to the point where he would allow you to answer his quizzes partly in other languages like bisaya, illongo, ilocano, etc and he also sings sometimes. 😭
He really challenges you to think literally and figuratively outside the box. He will change your mindset and make it more Filipino-centric. If you really are grade conscious however, I really suggest mastering your Filipino since he uses deep words in his lectures and you might get confused.
In terms of his assessments naman, he has three major (handwritten) quizzes that focus on analysis of different readings but he gives the question on the day of the quiz itself so you really have to be prepared. Other than that, he’s an easy B/B+, A with a LOT of effort. 😇

An A is very much possible; he gave at least 3 in our class before, and other people from his FILI 11 class in another semester also had the same experience. So if you're grade conscious, he's not too bad, you just need to put in the effort to make good essaysmore

I’m really bad at Filipino but I still got an A! It wasn’t easy but if there’s one advice I could give, do try to have unique insights. You really can’t bola your way through the class. You have to be able to give profound and meaningful analyses to impress Sir. I remember that Sir appreciated that my group was able to analyze a text he assigned through the lens of other texts. Don’t be afraid to have crazy ideas and be creative when analyzing but make sure you are able to prove them.more
