Boring but not as bad as people say

TLDR; While she’s not as bad (imo) as other people describe, she’s pretty boring and unengaging for the most part. She grades low on group projects and presentations but is generous on quizzes and exams. Pros: - She gives plenty of bonus questions in quizzes and exams. You can get up to twenty extra points in a 100~ item exam but they’re quite tricky (it involves riddles or something i forgot). Personally I got bumped from a B to a B+ on an exam because of them lol. - For the sem I had her she only had two long tests and you had the option of not taking the 2nd if you got a good enough grade in the first one. The first test was a simple and relatively easy objective type while the 2nd one (I didn’t take this) is an essay type. - Very approachable prof for consultations - Generous with deadlines and is willing to move them if the class asks - Its hard to fail her class Cons: - Medyo “yapper” in a sense na continuous mga lectures niya, kaya mahirap sundan at some points. It’s also hard to recite bc opportunities are uncommon (for me atleast) due to the aforementioned “yapping”. Medyo boring rin lectures niya ig. - Her criteria is quite “unclear”. Like may hinahanap siya na specific answer or line of thinking for presentations and such. So my best tip is to consult consult consult. - She tends to take a liking to “memorable” students, for lack of a better term. If you have a presence during class she tends to grade you higher. So either beadle or recite. - Marami siya sinesend na async materials (which aren’t sent during async sessions sometimes) on canvas which she doesnt discuss during class the lectures. It’s expected that you have already watched/read the material as she just expands on it during class. Kaya dapat talaga aralin mga async materials na sinesend niya, makatutulong din to sa recit. - She grades low. Mataas standards niya and medyo unclear rin (see con no. 2). Again, consult as much as u can to get her input. Overall C+ to B-able, B+/A with extreme effort.more

i'm classmates with most of the commenters here so i'll just essentially rehash their perspectives and add my own insights sa naging collective (and very unforgettable) experience namin :') the workload involved workshops, online quizzes, some discussion boards, class participation, and a comprehensive research paper. aside from the online quizzes and recitation, all of these requirements were done in groups. i'll just stress a point made time and time again na you really need to choose GOOD and RESPONSIBLE GROUPMATES, because their work alongside yours will make or break your grade. gusto ni ma'am na detailed ang explanations niyo, so make sure rin to pick groupmates who are well-versed in filipino (or people who have good work ethic!). from my understanding, the timeline for the research paper was supposed to be all semester-long, pero we truly only got half the sem to work on it 🥹 (so mga 2 - 3 months). getting a low grade (ranging from D to B) should be expected sa first chapter draft niyo, pero tataas naman 'yan sa mga susunod na drafts : D. sa final parts ng paper, we had to do an oral presentation about our results (medyo mas lenient siya rito ngl). after that, individual na ang paggawa ng conclusions and recommendations. i can say na she is A-able but you have to exert a LOT of effort! we used to joke na ab fili majors na kami due to the amount of effort we put in her requirements 🥲. she is an easy C+, in my opinion. tl;dr get good groupmates, be responsible, and you'll get an A as long as you take all requirements seriously! good luck,, i hope u find meaning in your would-be experience with ma'am somewhat (i learned a lot of fun facts about filipino slang hihi) 🫶more

hello! got her last sem! and hindi po siya ang easiest path to life. one thing for sure, she is mother and she has the expertise talaga na mapapahanga ka. ill feel that as long as you really try to be active in her classes, you'll find it interesting!! (kesa sa chika lang sa likod) for the workload part, super bigat ng paper. as early as possible PICK YOUR GROUPMATES WELL!! make sure that the people in your group has a good work ethic kasi kahit sabihin mong magaling ka sa filipino, HINDI MO SIYA KAKAYANING MAG-ISA. (make sure na ikaw rin matino, mahiya sa mga kagrupo, especially for scholars) defying moment din ang comments ni maam carlota, so expect low score in your first draft. this will push you to kinda hate her pero utilize her consultations in able to get better score. HINDI CRAMMABLE ANG PAPEL!! side note: napagmix up niya ata ang mga ppol sa recit namin kasi eme eme lang ang recit grades, mabuti 10% lang siya. utilize 2 attempts sa quizzes for higher chances of winning, pero again, paper talaga ang mabigat sa kaniya, SO DONT CRAM!! pick a doable topic. A is possible pero with MAX EFFORT AND GREAT GROUPMATES with a sprinkle kf headache, magdiwang na sa B+, ave grade siguro is B/C+ good luck, hindi siya madali, but find value kay madam cbf!more

Hi! Ma'am Carlota was my prof for FILI 11 in freshman year (so its 2021 pa and online, so take my comments with pag-aalinlangan na lang). You need to speak in Filipino language talaga, as in the only time you can use English is when its the last resort for words na walang direct translation (afaik its Filipino > Spanish > English sa hierarchy ng gagamitin na words). This saved me sa mga groupworks esp. sa times na random yung groupings. Honestly, I had fun sa classes niya. May substance yung tinatalakay niya sa class (she's not discussing what was presented sa vidlecs niya) and may value yung paglabas namin sa lessons just for her to reach a certain point na gusto niya ituro. It's a +++ points if matatandaan ka niya so recite a lot. I got an A tho kahit hindi ako beadle sa class niya, but you need to exert effort talaga. Get good groupmates (as in, good na kayang mag-articulate nang malinaw sa Filipino language) because majority of the grades would come from groupworks. Goodluck!more

Gaslighter 🤡 Pero in all seriousness, she’s quite unengaging and monotonous. Her requirements consist mostly of readings and recitation. If you challenge her, she will literally gaslight you. We had a major requirement (final requirement) that she didn’t clarify properly, so the whole class went on with the information we had at the moment. Turns out, she didn’t even send the emails/details to our beadles, and blamed it on them for not checking 💀 Be a beadle or read and know them by heart, because she grades low. had her for fili last year - LOVED HERRR! very insightful discussions esp as someone interested sa ph culture and sociopol topics - her lectures are def an acquired taste HAHAHAH u rly have to get into the mindset to stick thru it. she uses slides pero most of the time hindi nasusundan properly/confusing - uses malalim na tagalog a lot, i suggest na just be honest, open, and try ur best nalang to catch up - high standards pero very open and considerate naman. medyo confusing for me other projects/instructions niya so be open to consulting her or asking around lang - do ur best sa outputs since mabibigat talaga on ur grades + recite a lottt, she remembers students who do - def wasn't an easy a pero i didn't really mind kasi i loved her class and all her insights HAHAHAHmore
