Interesting but unfair DBs, mostly classmate reports

took him just this sem & managed to get a B+ in his class! He knows what he's talking about and his lectures and readings are very interesting, but u really feel a sense of laziness because we only had 1 lecture a week and he himself only lectured like FOUR TIMES tapos puro classmate reports na. So for like 3/4 of the sem it was just my classmates reporting (aka basically teaching us for him 💀). I had to sit in on another Histo 12 (Giron) because I was so afraid of not learning properly and thus being unable to give good answers on the DBs. Speaking of the DBs though... Honestly imo, he grades really unfairly 💀 for example the lowest he gave in that report was a 120/150 though I know for a fact there were several people whose presentations were genuinely so obviously and badly crammed 😭 in his DBs as well, he gives everyone a perfect score no matter what you write, I even heard from a friend of a friend that there were people who only wrote like 1 sentence (and his DBs often designate a specific sentence count, 15 to 20 usually) and that person STILL got a perfect score same as everybody. It just feels like a slap in the face for people like me who frankly put in a lot of effort. Lots of people worry about the Tagalog part and I sympathize with that because I'm very conyo and I was also worried about that. Honestly, you'll be fine. What's good is that the DBs give you a way to exercise your Tagalog writing skills every week to a point that by halfway through the sem you'll have gotten pretty used to it already. Additionally, he doesn't mind people using Taglish or even English in the report—I defaulted to English a lot and I still got a decently high score. What he DOES care about is your slides. His reasoning is that, you can't perfectly prepare for the report because he doesn't allow a script, but you CAN prepare the slides in advance, so he's critical of typographical errors and excessive English use in there. For the report, if you want a good grade you cannot expect to slack off and cram it. I spent maybe two weeks in the library reading a lotttt of books to prepare for the actual report, and the slides were finished in half a week. My speaking Tagalog is very bad so what really saved me was that I knew my subject matter very well. He's okay with a lot of English as long as (1) the slides are Tagalog, (2) he can tell you *tried* to speak in Tagalog, and (3) he can tell you know your stuff. Honestly, even after the entire sem I still don't know if I'd recommend him. His readings are banger though.more

a lot dont like him but i would take him again icl! had him for histo 12, he has NO tests or quizzes. you just have 4 main outputs: a presentation you present live, and 2 powerpoints you have to submit. all 3 outputs are based on research. plus one discussion board every week, but out of the ~12 discussion boards you'll answer, he only grades 2 of them. he dosent really teach, and the presentation you do live is basically him making the class teach each other. he does give good insights afterwards and when he does lecture, its really insightful and good. but then again, its not tested on so theres really no point in listening lol. he dosent even check attendance. so yea, pretty easy. the research tho is not that easy. one of the powerpoints we had to submit was a report on a specific year, and we had to use actual newspaper articles as part of our references (found in old rizal lib!). plus, for the live presentation and other powerpoint, sir has a specific list of sources that you could use, and a lot of them were books that were pretty hard to find online, or could only be found physically in the rizal lib. its a pretty long list naman, but still if you happen to need a source and its not online, its a bit hassle. sir does allow sources outside of his list, but you have to ask sir to approve the source (its just an email) so yea, i would take him again because it may seem like a lot of work, but tbh its not that heavy. i crammed all of the assessments usually a day before (or the day of) and still got pretty good scores.more

he’s a goated prof, don’t get me wrong, but if you don’t like self studying (like… ACTUALLY being on your own) then don’t take him. he teaches for the first few weeks of the semester then leaves the rest of it for individual presentations about topics he has yet to discuss. a good thing tho is his protocol on thursdays: no class unless absolutely necessary, so he just gives discussion boards that are due the following wednesday. BUT only two out of fifteen discussion boards are graded RANDOMLY, kaya kailangan mo talaga silang gawin unless malakas kapit mo kay Lord. he is also kind of considerate when it comes to cancelling classes! if the university doesn’t announce anything but the heat/rain (or any other matter) is obviously going to affect the class’s attendance, there’s a 65% chance he’ll give the class a free cut. i cannot deny that you really will learn when HE discusses, but it gets hard to keep that enthusiasm and drive up when he stops teaching. i genuinely feel like i would recommend him if it were not for that 💔. tldr: amazing prof, not good execution of class (???)more

GEALOGO is pretty light if you don't cram

work load for gealogo might pile on pretty quickly if you’re prone to cramming, but he has minimal class time/lectures (meeting once a week only) so that’s a plus if you use that time well. your assessments have to be in filipino, which is alright if you get to translate your work from english, but be prepared nalang siguro to present in front of him. he was forgiving when my classmates presented in taglish, so just try your best. if you stay on top of the discussion boards (they don’t have to be maximum effort, best to just be consistent) and avoid cramming, gealogo is pretty lightmore

Hello! It depends on how the semester is going but by default, all thursdays are asynchronous 😁 In our case lang kasi, we had a lot of monday suspensions in the latter half of the sem so he ended up having to switch the asynchronous sessions to mondays and vice versamore

he’s okay! terrible if you want an A (its impossible unless through sheer luck), but perfect when you want a low workload class during a heavy sem (like mine personally when i was taking MATH 40.1 + 4 other majors). He’s B+ able (like my grade). But i did receive the highest score in my section’s presentations (140/150) and a relatively high score in another one, but his grading system make it too tough to get an A, he dislikes “grade conscious students” (which i find ironic tbh). I also sense that he didn’t check our Gawain 4, because he never returned the scores, but for the others he did. I guess a tip w the presentations is first to be a good speaker (i assure you it MATTERS ALOT) and to have an extremely unique perspective/point of/regarding history.more

Had him for Histo 11! Afaik no one got an A, but he’s B - B+ able! Hindi rin siya mahilig mag synch classes iirc. When I had him I was first year pa so I can’t super remember but our requirements for him were around 4 lang and mga 100+ points per output so malaki talaga hila niya. He never gave anyone a perfect though. Personally he’s an okay prof naman, just be active when he does hold synch classes and show him na you’re listening talaga :))more

Start that report early before Rizal Library books vanish
and it's really important that you start your research for that report early because a good portion of the (very excellent) sources that he gives out are only available in Rizal Library and you HAVE to get your hands on those books before his other classes do!!!!more

I think people telling you to straight up “RUN” are exaggerating I mean imo he’s actually a really good and knowledgeable prof however when it comes to his style of teaching execution wise it’s pretty shit and lots of missed potential HAHAHAHAHA, cause when he does discuss history the things that come up are actually pretty interesting, and the readings he gives are pretty good but all we literally do is just discussion boards and presentations which is rlly disappointing because there should definitely be more you can get out of him, he’s not rlly evil or terror or anything, just rlly boring and there are definitely better profs you can learn from out theremore

you are teaching yourself in that class 🤣 i reviewed him more in a previous post but he's not super strict about tagalog naman and he grades pretty leniently (lots of B). he doesn't really teach, puro readings and report ng mga kaklase mo. however it's kinda impossible to A him, me and friends did max effort and only got a B+.more
