Hello! Had him for FILI 12 last sem and he’s a really greaaat prof! He was one of my favorite profs last semester. 🤩
- He knows A LOT about literature kaya kahit may discussions per module sa Canvas, make sure to still attend his onsite lectures because marami kang insights na makukuha from those na helpful sa reqs na need niyong i-submit and even sa quizzes. He also makes the topics even more interestinggg.
- He’s a bit scary lang sa una (looks mataray and nakakatakot) pero he’s actually kind and funny HAHAHA.
- He’s not super strict naman in terms of speaking in Filipino, sa outputs lang. Oks lang sa kanya Taglish kapag want mong mag-recite. ‘Wag ding mahiyang magsabi ng thoughts during discussions kasi i-a-acknowledge niya ‘yan for sure. When he teaches tho, he mainly speaks in Filipino talaga hehe. Participate, participate, because he remembers everyone esp yung mga palasalita at pala-recite sa klase HAHAHA. He randomly calls people din pala lalo na kapag walang nagtataas ng kamay HAHAHA.
- Workload was oks lang—four major submissions tapos may ilang onsite and online quizzes lang at midterm exam. There were also some DBs per module. Final output was a paper na we were supposed to present din onsite, pero he canceled the presentation part na lang.
- I would say tho na he really has high standards. Kaya you need to exert a lot of effort talaga sa mga output if you want to get good grades kasi kaya niya talagang magbigay ng super babang grade based sa quality ng submission mo. I suggest din na gamitin ang consultation hours bec marami siyang suggestions na sobrang helpful sa paggawa nung outputs, esp sa final paper.
- Some submissions were graded and returned on time naman, pero yung iba (especially yung DBs), towards the end of the sem na talaga na-grade.
- Lenient naman sa deadlines. Considerate din as long as you explain your side hehe. Responsive din sa messages! :))
- He grades fairly (or low HAHAHUHU), basta give it your all sa bawat output talaga at huwag mong subukang i-mema kasi bibigyan ka rin niya ng dasurv na grade for that HAHAHA. I think (not sure) average grade na binibigay niya ay B, pero definitelyyyy kaya ang B+ to A with much much effort. 😄
- Overall, great prof talaga. Would definitely take him again kung may chance.
TL;DR: Great and kind prof, saks lang na workload, has HIGH standards, grades fairly. B with saktong amount of effort, B+ to A with much much effort and dasal. Don’t mema your outputs! HAHAHA. Message me lang if you have more questions pa. :))more

disclaimer: this is just our experience with him as a professor and our personal opinions.
had him for the first sem this year and i dont know if it was just our class but our experience with sir gloria was quite different from previous comments.
in terms of readings, he gave long readings and a lot of the time were super hard to decode even for full-speaking filipinos (so it was even harder for classmates who were not well-versed in the language). it became super demotivating to study filipino, a subject i typically enjoyed.
short quizzes were also difficult. we had one every week or every other week, multiple presentations, 2 essay-type long tests, and a very very challenging objective exam in the end of the sem.
in terms of grading, he is quite harsh. not really a-able. b-able with extra effort. realistically, a c.
although i agree he is passionate, it was very overwhelming having him as a prof. if u have daddy issues, maybe consider load rev because he's very tough.
nevertheless, i passed his class (pasang awa). he's super knowledgeable about the stuff he teaches tho so you'll definitely learn something.
he gives lots of bonus points too, so attend them all (they're usually films, plays, events, etc) despite how time consuming they are (a lot of them ended at night). also, try reading your assigned readings in groups and don't forget to take note of details you may think are unnecessary. he asks for the author sometimes.
overall, this subject was so stressful (i had anxiety just entering it 😂 and it got to a point where i was more stressed over filipino than calculus)

had him for fili 12 (panitikan ng pilipinas) so there were a lot of readings!! not sure if it's the same for fili 11
but yes since every class may bagong reading kami, mabigat tlg. honestly, binasa k lahat ng readings niya pero medyo scan scan lang ganorn, di q naman talaga inintindi masyado. so pagdating nung exam, bagsak bagsak ak HAHAHAHA AS IN TIPONG 9/25 😭 and depende s trip niya, pero minsan puro memorization tlg kelangan s exam niya so take note of that! pero minsan essay haha strict sha dun pero napapagod din sha kakacheck after 1-2 essay-based exams (kase ampapanget daw magsulat ng lahat HAHAHA)
anyw kahit puro bagsak ak s exam, nakabawi naman ak thru recit! as in kada klase cguro nakaka 2 or more times ak nagrerecit HAHDHSHA yapper kase aq
but yes he curves a bit and im fairly confident he will bump u from a C+ to a B+ if u recite a lot (i2 ata nangyari saken HSHDHAHQ)! also ginawa q lahat ng bonus so yes dont skip a single one HAHAHA
tldr; A-able for sure! just study, recite lots, and do ALL bonus activities

yes agree he’s def a very thought provoking professor and you can really tell he’s well versed in what he does! big fan of the selection of readings esp because he’s able to analyze them and break them down in a much deeper way and icl you get scared to go to class if u don’t read so pls read 🤣
he does not play abt the short quizzes though (very objective) so make sure you prepare beforehand (not the type of test u could bola huhu)more

ngl, in terms of workload, heavy. many quizzes, groupworks, presentations, long readings, hard exams, and dapat ready ka every meeting for recitation (he uses index cards/calls randomly). in short, his class is challenging and humbling... but THE MOST WORTH IT (malalaman mo rin kung bakit hehe)
pro tips (A-able!!)
• always attend his onsite classes. supplementary lang content sa canvas, he shares everything sa klase
• listen carefully to his lecture, take note of everything, and isapuso ang mga tinuturo niya!! might sound corny pero if u understand the essence of everything abt ur class and his passion, digesting knowledge is much easier and motivating
• show effort. mag-recite and just do ur best sa lahat kahit bobong-bobo ka na sa sarili mo sa sobrang hirap HAHSHAHHA i think he appreciates it
• get good groupmates. sir generally grades fairly or low HAHAHA bec he has high standards pero my group aced the last requirement bec i got the best ppl cc: mwa

Truly an experience to have been his student. Got an A in his class but it also took loads of effort. As a freshie, his class was really the one that made me see why Ateneo is so known for its liberal arts. Would take his class again in a heartbeat 💓

dont go for sir gloria if you want an easy a prof. he has insightful lectures but he is us very particular with how you phrase words, because even if his lectures are subjective they have very objective ideas which pops out in quizzes. bring a dictionary if you are not confident with filipino. attend all bonus opportunities. recite as much as you can. he likes cold calling so be sure to read the readings. he’s funny but kinda intimidating so make sure you get on his good side toomore

had him for fili 12.1, he can be pretty strict and nitpicky with assessments but he's really passionate and knowledgeable about the subject matter! not an easy A but his discussions are engaging and the amount of learning you'll get will be worth it. he can be kind of tough on you if you don't have a strong background in filipino (aka my entire class with him as this was the FNFS program) but if you have good groupmates and work hard you'll grow a lot in his class.more

i think A-able if u show that u actually care as much as he does about the learning materials, a.k.a. read the readings on time or else he’ll quiz the class on it, be mentally present during the lectures (dont be late), take notes, and recite a lot (with substance). he might seem intimidating but maybe hes just a scorpio rising or smthng cos hes actually really nice and funny 👍🏻 he also let us choose our groupmates for finals noon hehe

i graduated last yr and i had sir gloria back in freshie yr pa so my thoughts might be outdated, but we loved having sir as our fil prof :) funny and approachable but also really good at what he does and makes sure each meeting is productive. just make sure to really understand your readings (skimming won’t do), contribute during class, and take notes. i think we had quizzes every other meeting, some were pop quizzes. he has high standards for papers so don’t cram those. A-able with effort and sufficient fil writing background !more

overall good prof and b+/b-able with effort as long as you read the readings. very open with several interpretations of the text, but his quizzes are very objective so gl. can be intimidating but only because he’s passionate about what he teaches. said he doesn’t curve but everyone ended up w higher grades than expected because of the bonus points he offered to the class like attending art exhibits and watching plays, so try getting all the bonus pts u can.

and i can fully say he is one of my favorite teachers ever in the universe. like the other comments, he is definitely a character. if you like literature and different perspectives on literature, AMAZING! sir JC is a big fan of different points of view, and the readings given showcase that well. the readings given are extremely rich in content, however yes--they are pretty difficult to read huhu.
the short quizzes did beat my ass BUT once i got a feel of what kind of teacher is, the biggest piece of advice i implore you all to take is READ. THE READINGS. i personally ran it through AI for summaries (guilty) but that doesn't mean that's all you should rely on.more

Hii! Make sure to read all the readings before class! And I mean really dooo because if you cant answer his question he can make you go out of the classroom! Yes that has happened to two people in my class 😅 He randomly shuffles the index cards to call on you 🤣 also his pet peeve is when people use the bathroom especially if your class is right after a break! I had him during my first sem and oh boy not freshie friendly 🥲 although if you put in effort you can probably get a B in his class! Also participate a lot!!
