Maam Jeivi is one of my fave profs this sem! 💜 She is an excellent lecturer, and can somehow synthesize and deepen simple observations from the class. There's always something new to learn from her, and I appreciate how she makes the class discussion chill, engaging, and a safe space. I took her night class (6:30-8:00pm) tho, so I'm not sure about how she is with earlier classes. The assessments are comprised of modular reading reports (500-800 words), an essay-type long exam by pair (students can choose to have it onsite or take-home, the popular choice is obvious LOL), a 40-minute group presentation on one of the special modules, and a research proposal outline (1.5k-2k words) on the same module. Overall, the workload is manageable since everything is by group except the reports. You also only have to write 4 reports out of ~6 modules, and you can write them individually or by pair (M1 report is required individually tho). The real challenge is condensing your thoughts to fit the word limit HAHA Maam Jeivi values connecting insights lifted from the readings/lectures to personal experience. It can be overwhelming since there are MANY readings, but tbh you don't have to read them all, just cite specific concepts that you want to use in your reports. Maam also isn't strict with ensuring that you read all the readings before class. The biggest downside is that she returns feedback and scores late. We were in the dark on our scores for most of the sem. Aside from one report, she gave all our scores after the sem has ended (when we already knew our final grades 😭). It was stressful not being given feedback, but I think she grades fairly. The average of the class was around B+. Definitely A-able with effort. Personally, CulPsyc is more of a critical writing course than a reading course. Maam Jeivi seems to have high standards with regards to style of writing and quality of work. Since she returned feedback for our first report quite late tho, it was hard to know which areas to improve on 🥲 My advice is to take advantage of her consultations to ask about your assessments. She is usually available at the Gender Hub and can be approached after class or via email. Our group consulted with her for our proposal, where she basically approved our topic and told us what she expects to see in our output. She's also approachable for other concerns, at some point I asked her for career advice lol Encouraging people to take her class because her lectures are very insightful! 👍 CulPsyc changes the way you analyze Filipino social practices, norms, and issues, and Maam's teaching approach really hones in on the connections between culture and real-life experiences. It IS woke since we critique changing and intersecting discourses surrounding family, religion, gender, politics, queer realities, etc. Definitely recommend taking her 💯 cc: my module 6a girlies 🌈💕more

agree with everything said! while we only received specific comments on one module reading report, it seems that she focuses on 1) how you translate class concepts into genuine and emotional personal realizations and 2) organization of writing style. she comments on small details like if a transition between paragraphs feels forced and if a statement could be worded more concisely or in a more straightforward manner. imo, her constructive criticism on writing style was always valid. i think her high standards for quality of writing are what makes it more challenging—but definitely not impossible—to get an A. being passionate about your outputs also seems to gain her approval. fact checking other comments: she DID provide grades on individual outputs, although these were visible only after aisis grades were released. if people are anonymously going to attack her, i would encourage them to reflect not only on the quality of work they have been providing but also on their attitude overall that likely translates into their papers. writing good papers, especially for a course like culpsy, involves a healthy amount of self-awareness ☝️ ma’am jeivi was nothing but kind to us all throughout the semester, and her subject was a welcome breather because of how she purposefully structured the class as an open conversation rather than a one-way lecture. while she does have points for improvement regarding feedback and communication outside of onsite classes, i think a review fuelled by frustration (and possibly a mismatch in teaching-learning style) does not give justice to how much of a safe space she was able to foster during her class time. overall, i appreciated her and her class and would love to see her around more pride events in the future 🌈more

Hello! Glad you felt reassured OP! 🥹 Yes, no written on-the-spot exams. There is an option to take the LT (essay-form) onsite or take-home, but her classes always choose the latter HAHA As for grading, I'd say she grades fair! Generally, the average of our class is around B+. She emphasizes that culture isn't just learned but also experienced, so mention personal experiences for the reports! Sometimes she extends ddls even after she discusses the module, so take note of what she says during her lectures LOL. Highly recommend citing concepts from other, newer articles and not just the readings. You can use ideas from her lectures as basis as well. Prioritize writing quality! She pays attention to how well you organize your ideas + link personal exp to the concepts. Ask or consult with her about anything! It helps with the group presentation + final research proposal as well. Getting a response from her via email is 50/50, so approach her onsite instead 😭 Lastly, have a reliable partner and reliable (and creative) groupmates! None of the assessments are objective, so how well you write, present, and work together also matters. Pick the module topic you and your groupmates are most passionate about! hi! ma’am is definitely not a terror prof to load rev out of huhu i’m glad you’re giving her a chance 🥹 more tips for getting an A: - if you’re doing the reading reports by pair, it helps to compare and contrast experiences between you and your partner! (e.g., different family values shaping different perspectives on the world growing up) - she appreciates deep personal reflections. here’s a sample i wrote in my individual report that she specifically praised: “While my arguably less traumatic upbringing guided me towards having a more stable sense of self, did it make me less of a Filipino? Why was trauma the first aspect of cultural identity that came to my mind?” + obv not everyone can use the same analysis because everyone’s context is different 😄 - as she mentioned during one of our consultations: readings are just jump off points! she doesn’t expect you to touch on all the statements in the readings during your discussions or reports. she wants to see how the readings helped you form a critical view of how we move in society today. what further questions or realizations about the world and our societal norms do you have after reading the readings? despite all the negative reviews, i’d also like to assure you that and i are not the only two people who got an A ahaha meron naman kaming kilalang iba so it really is attainable 💘 good luck, anon!more

ok na sana if she wasn't always late & returned papers on time :") i personally found it difficult to gauge where i was in class because we never got papers until the very end na of the sem. it would've been better sana if i got feedback in a timely manner so that we could adjust accordingly. Also wasnt rlly that responsive on canvas/emailmore
