i enjoyed it naman but he has a bit of favoritism for the people who are already knowledgeable of the subject to begin with. hes the prof that my block and the other one who took his class with us liked the least so teaching style - he makes you move your chairs so that theres a space in the center so that it doesn’t feel like a usual classroom setup and more of an exchange of ideas - he does not give back ANY of your scores. you have to pry it out of him. - unimportant but he assigned the beadle to take a bunch of pictures of us during the lesson which is kinda funny - OK HERES THE CRAZY THING: for socsci11 you get like around 20+ readings. he assigns one reading to each person and YOU have to make a PPT and teach it. this is a HUGE part of your grade for us it was 20% - he doesn’t teach each individual reading. he makes the students do it and every 5 readings he makes a short summary where he says the keywords (from our debrief after the sem he kind of opened up about how he reuested to lessen the number of readings) - theres this thing in every module called self care activities where you answer a question and it’s usually a journal prompt, infographic, or artistic piece that you need to do in relation to the lessons in the module - theres a big debate at the end of the semester so just make sure that your chosen speaker is good and constantly references the readings (anyone can take the mic naman during debate but the chosen speaker speaks the most) tips - during his short summaries take note of ALL of the keywords - his tests are situational essay types. he gives a situation and you have to use the lessons in the module to answer the question so to get perfect here you just need to (correctly!) say all the necessary keywords - to fully understand each reading, you need to go out of your way and read it yourself so just don’t be lazy with that - in your self care activities, he likes it when you vent and be open but you really need to relate it to the reading and not just go off at your own experience - be so so so annoying during recitation like make sure you answer every single day (most of his recitation is situational and personal anyways) grading - well it’s hard to say how he grades because he didn’t return any of our assessments so i only know my final grade - other than one person idk anyone who got an A but most got B+ or B - it’s pretty easy to get a B+ or B but getting an A means you lowk need to be his favorite tldr: B+ to B-able, difficult A — just make sure to self study a lot and recite until hes very familiar with your face and name. relate every written work to all keywords he mentions in class don’t be scared. idk anyone who failed or got a d.more

He taught only 1 class last year, and was admittedly distraught as expressed in his honesty about only getting hired a few days prior to the start of the semester. This would be repeatedly referenced as the root cause of a majority of our concerns as this would result in not having an official Ateneo email address, therefore not having an official Canvas class, his syllabus being late, and therefore having no grade transparency whatsoever. Our mode of learning was via MsTeams, which was a steep learning curve for us all. He also attempted to provide a more socratic teaching method by not teaching at all, and instead distributed 35 readings across all students to present. A majority of our grade came from this 1 presentation, and quizzes were few to none—and when it happened, it was announced in class, on the day itself. As a result, study material was abundant, yet scattered. And because a majority of the grade came from the 1 presentation, there is no incentive for others to pay attention to the other lessons that aren’t their own. There were no submission bins; all files were DMs to him via MsTeams. This rubbed me the wrong way, particularly because he generally lacks a complete sense of professionalism. He replies to these DM queries, if at all, with abbreviated and colloquial language, as if talking to your friend. He will message at obscene hours of the night. He may jokingly invite you to out of campus activities. But because of the lack of submission bins, we received no numerical or qualitative equivalents for any of our assessments. Our standing was a mystery. All that is to say, the class is not difficult. In fact, it’s an easy B to B+, rare A (95%-100%). It’s also definitely a class you can cut with no consequence. But diminishing it to that would discount the fact that that grade came at the cost of a semester’s worth of frustration. That the grade you got spawned out of thin air with no factual basis because you never got anything back, or for all the vague assessments and unanswered DMs you would have to send to understand what he wants. My frustration led me to request for a grade appeal, not to change, but just to ask if there was even a break down to begin with. The department chair did confirm that it existed with no miscalculations, and I just got disincentivized to keep probing him about how we as students never got to see this. Nevertheless, all the replies you will receive will come from the 1 class he handled. Hence, it will be skewed. I would only hope that he’d finally adjust well and that he would iron out all these issues, and maybe you would have a different experience. Good luck!more

I’ve been WAITING for someone to ask about this man. I can definitely corroborate the review given by the other anonymous member in terms of grading and assignment. Almost zero feedback during the sem itself. This review is moreso about my (and my classmates’) daily experience in his class. In terms of “teaching”, when he actually DOES lecture (which was rare for us), be ready for a prof who fishes for a singular, obscure answer to a nonsensical question for 10-15 minutes (if not more), with a frankly wild inability to read the room and notice that 90% of the class has already checked out. I hope, for your sake, that he has changed. From what I could tell, he *appeared* to care about teaching, but in the sense that it’s his way or the highway. He’s extremely new, so the hope is that he has learned and grown somewhat. And, as stated by the other reviewer, he only taught one class last semester, so our experience was deeply unique and singular. Maybe he’s different to other people. Nevertheless, my best advice is to try to loadrev out of his class if you can. But if not, best of luck! That’s a rough first year/first sem prof to have. Ah, that I’m actually not sure. As far as I know, the loadrev process is active between August 5-12 for this upcoming sem, so you can check in with the OUR (office of university registrar) regarding switching sections for your SocSci class. You can also try calling their number by looking online if it’s difficult for you to reach them in person for whatever reason. Just a few caveats. Firstly, they don’t usually recommend loadrevving for freshies, so you may find a hard time getting approved for that. Secondly, prepare for the lines to be long!more

no, you don’t have to read the others. just focus on reading yours fully, since your classmates will not read your reading and will rely on your explanation for the material they will study, so don’t take shortcuts. in regards to your other question, being his beadle did not guarantee a higher grade. it really is a combination of frequent recitation and also winning the debate. since you also have the privilege of an early syllabus unlike we did, i would suggest asking him questions. you can press him on why he chose to include certain things (such as debate mechanics), and ask him for clarification early on. he’s confusing, but he will adapt if you press him enough about it (such was the case when we asked him to dismiss us earlier and to stop keeping us past the bell), and he will count your being meticulously as you taking interest.more

Disorganized syllabus; content isn't hard if you track reqs

I’ll be honest and say that I kind of checked out of his class and got a B. However, I think that was mainly because I submitted a requirement late. In my opinion, it was due in part to how disorganized his syllabus and submissions were. This sem, everything should hopefully be on canvas. Don’t be afraid to check in and clarify about certain requirements. As stated by the other review, his content isn’t actually that hard. He did do handwritten essays as quizzes with quite strict time constraints, so watch out for that. My best recommendation for you is to make sure that you keep track of his requirements, because from what I know he was very disorganized. Again, wishing you the best. If you’ll accept these words of encouragement, it’s clear that you care a lot! As a freshie, that goes a long way. I know that this review and the previous one seem very scary, but you’ve got this. And again, if you or your classmates need any more help with him in the upcoming semester, feel free to ask here and people will be glad to help.more

is he still carrying out the individual presentations? if that’s the case, you wouldn’t need to read the readings yourself (at all, imo. the only one you fully read is your own). pick up the key points from those presentations, and within them, sir ideally also emphasizes the things he wants you to remember.more

nice to know his vagueness hasn’t left him, haha. seconding the comment above, our big final assessment was a debate with an affirmative and opposition and some other minor roles. it sucks because your house basically had to win to get the higher grade, even if the losing side shows that they’ve understood the concept. i never got that. his assessments are one big vibe based judgement. to do well on paper, do well in action. get him to like you by speaking often, and ideally this connection would build up to a favoritism at the end of the semester. that’s the honest truth.more

Hi, i’m not sure if this is what you mean but we did have a “debate” at the end of the sem where the class was divided in two and had to come up with positions around whether gender was a social construct or not. if that’s not what you mean, i’m not sure that we did? though maybe my other classmate might know and can help you. In terms of surviving his assessments, I think I’d just defer to what other people have said, mainly just using the keywords he specifically mentions in class and mention the readings as much as possible 😓 it can be a hassle but yeah i think that’s kinda it. and being a favorite does help im pretty sure, like my classmate saidmore

He’s DMed students about hanging out after class hours. I won’t expound, since it isn’t my story to tell. It isn’t anything obscene but it’s definitely not normal. None of it ever materialized though, of course. He attempts to make himself relatable to his students through these means, but it just comes off as unprofessional and strange. He often cites his upd education as his basis for teaching experience so he might have derived that out-of-class prof to student relationship idea from it. There were a lot of things we had to criticize him for because of this thinking, as minuscule as him debating how the 5 minute bell worked in campus (he refused to dismiss us on the first bell) to not wanting to give everyone an A because “that isn’t how it worked”.more
