Easy B+/A if you memorize, not if you think

Leaving a review, because I just got so irked by the class (ECON 111). Easy B+/A. Just calculations, I didn’t learn anything tbh, you can memorize through the class and not truly think critically about it. The way he presented the topics were so formulaic, and in this “step by step” manner (sounds good on paper but you don’t learn it in depth… you can get away with memorizing). His partials are NOT about understanding, just final answers. So you could hypothetically understand the content but make a small mistake (thats not reflective of your understanding) and you will get a 0/10. Case in point he doesn’t reward critical thinking, just how robotic you can do computations. The math is honestly really really really really really really trivial, which is sad because thats his “selling point” lol. If you know Calculus, you don’t need to learn new techniques apart from the Hessians in class. Has this weird thing about how he can “give hard exams” but i seriously doubt that his hypothetical “hard exams” are hard because you need to think but just how tedious the calculations are. He also just handwaves alot of the Math, and it’s sometimes straight up wrong, but he refuses to budge, like how MRS is the FOC, not the slope of the indifference curve; he contradicted himself there. Or how concave and convex preferences are the “same”????????? His bordered Hessian for the dual problem is wrong, but we never used it. Lecture quality is okay. “Fair” grading, but doesn’t make it a good class. I didn’t do the problem sets, I don’t pay much (or any) attention in class, and I used it as a filler class and I still got an A (had a 104% at some point). TLDR: Boring. I didn’t feel like i earned the grade. It’s just… computations, no proofs, no conceptual understanding or anything, just trivial calculations that you MUST NOT GET WRONG. CC:more

Hello! I took the first LT yesterday. It was done during class hours. His LTs have computational items (ex maximization using Lagrange multipliers) but also conceptual questions you need to answer graphically with some explanations, but the conceptual ones still are related to the math you will have done. His first LT was generally okay. His problem set and examples in class were more tedious (or harder), but I assume it is because he wanted to fit in conceptual items. I think he taught well enough and if you listened you’ll do okay in his LTs. The LT is very much fair! Just note his class is reliant on Math so it may be harder or easier for you depending on your Math skills. If you are good the class will be extremely easy, no joke:DD Note this is only based on the first LT and there will be two more!more

ECON 115 is taught using the text “Fundamental methods of mathematical economics” from Chiang and Wainwright. I am unsure what you mean by “formatted” so I will just give a review of the class and his testing style. ECON 115 is not difficult. Lessons are: basic matrix algebra, the nature of economic models (ex. what endogenous vs exogenous variables), optimization, Karush-Kuhn-Tucker method. It is the usual LT nearly fully consisting of problem solving. In particular, Dr. Beja does not give partial credit. He only checks final answers. Thus if a question has multiple subparts which depend on previous subparts, you must be extremely careful because it could net you a large deduction.more
