Take Labastilla for the intersession otherness-in-film class if you will attend, participate, and keep up with many short readings plus films. Students in this two-row bundle call him nice, the class fun, and one reports an Easy A. Sample is two writeups only, so this is lean_take rather than take, and it does not speak to Senior Seminar or INTACT.

SKILTY. best class, swear. Make sure you have friends! pray you’re not with tensed/super serious ppl bc this class is fun talaga. He’s a cool dad. Yung netflix niya puro peppa pig.. Our password for our class site was SAisthisshit 😢 Go figure his vibe nalang. Flow of class: gives you readings (usually online articles lang, ez n INTERESTING reads, nothing corny) —> group seatwork about it (reflection/summary of that reading) or fun activities (simulations, role play, presentations) —> synthesis with the whole class. We watch a documentary once a week. 2 tests, all essay. Just read the readings beforehand / watch the videos and you’re good to go. Actually, kahit hindi nga eh ‘cause engaging in the class activities is enough for you to know what to write. Had a final group paper (3k words) + a presentation about it. You have the option to make a video rin. I don’t remember him discussing much.. nothing was forced down our throats but we learned n appreciated the subject so much. Just recite because there’s no right or wrong answers naman! He just wants to see you participate. 20% is participation, which took a toll on my grade ‘cause i had to miss 2 weeks of class. Made us send a self-evaluation every 5 weeks and he considers what you say rin. Try not to cut!! You wouldn’t want to anyway. Easy B-A 🙂more

Took this class a year ago during intersession. I enjoyed this class, particularly because it was one of the few film classes I took that tackled “otherness” and intersectionality in the local context. Some of the films and readings are in Filipino and iirc there was some poems that were in other Philippine languages (which I loved).
For those who may be wondering, Sir Labastilla did not require our class naman to use Filipino for the reqs (the primary language is still english).
Most of the film choices are mainstream so you probably would’ve heard or watched them na before even going to the class.

super LOVED the class i think esp for non-soh people it would be a great breather bc y'all be watching and reading filipino films and texts throughout the sem! lots of discussion at least during ours??? bc everyone was contributing to the discussion so it didn't seem like sir skilty was just handing out info. lots of group work din. the required readings r okay. tapos he'd invite filmmakers to the class and it was rlly expansive having discourse with the class about things concerning othering. easy b+ i'd say and very a-able.more

film choices may be sort of either a cringe or drag, but those are about the only cons. Totally a chill class, and definitely knew that’ll get you new friends cause of all the group stuff.

For his papers, read the instructions carefully and follow them to the letter. Nothing format-wise but he gives a structure/outline of how he wants the paper to flow. Following that should make it easier to write and raise your grade! :)more

Lerma discusses exactly what's in the book. I honestly didn't listen 90% of the time but got pretty good grades because I studied the book. If you're looking to be amazed by his lessons this is the wrong professor. He also doesn't really give A's from what I remember but its very very difficult to fail this class.more

Lerma is a pretty decent prof. Although you don't need to attend his lectures because all of the exam content can be found in the book, it's still fun to go because he shares his own stories in relation to the current topic and he's a great speaker. As for attendance, I cut way more than 9 times and ended up with a b+, so I don't think he really takes attendance so seriously. Also, I think he likes sad stories for the reflection papers you have to write for the sem HAHAmore
