Ask questions or he assumes you get it

Okay so here's what I think about him as his beadle for MATH 31.1 and 31.2: Vibe: He really gives off "Supreme Being, Knower of All Math"-esque vibes which may make it difficult for you to catch up to him if you don't have a basic understanding of calculus or other relevant math skills beforehand. He teaches as if people know and understand what he is talking about, so during discussions, you should really ask questions or else he will assume that you understand and continue on to the next topic. Learning Materials: I believe we were his first class during the online set-up, so he was adjusting to how he would handle us, so I'll give him that consideration. But during the first half of MATH 31.1, his system was like asynchronous video uploads and then Q&A during synchs. Sometimes, again, because we wouldn't understand the lesson in the video upload, we wouldn't have any questions for him during the synch before. Therefore our synch sessions back then would be like 30-45 minutes of silence, with him waiting for questions. I had to write him a letter pa of how the block would like the synchronous sessions to be, and he followed naman (he is open naman to feedback with regards to his teaching, at least to me, as long as you say it and word it VERY NICELY. emphasis on VERY NICELY.) Apart from that he speaks in a non-engaging voice so you might find yourself sleepy during class. Other than that, he answers your questions naman, but be receptive lang of moments when he implies na you should know this skills, but you don't. ASK QUESTIONS. Assessments: Idk, okay naman for me? Just don't rely on his synchronous sessions and try reading the book. Sa book ako dumepende for both subjects, because sometimes his assessments are easy kunwari, but involves more critical thinking. Plus, he quite hates(?) assessments that need solutions kasi it's a hassle for him to check, so he usually makes objective-type questions na 4 points each (all or nothing). He does sometimes put show your solutions quizzes, so have your scanner and paper with signature ready. Assessment Feedback: Okay, this is the part where some of the block really gets irritated with him. When people inquire about when he would grade the quizzes (so that the class can know where they went wrong and study for the LTs), he would not respond. I personally would ask him a question regarding something different (e.g. synchronous session schedule) and then, when I ask him about the ungraded quizzes, he would not respond. He only checked our show-your-solution quizzes for MATH 31.1 at the end of MATH 31.2. TL;DR he gives feedback for quizzes super late. For the Beadle: Don't. Just don't. You will have to get a whole lot of patience for him, especially since he gets topaks here and there. Sometimes good mood, sometimes off-limits badtrip. Mini-rant: One time he sent the wrong Zoom link to the class and we waited until he opened the Zoom room. I even contacted him through Canvas Chat if he sent the wrong Zoom link. I waited the whole one hour of the session for the Zoom link to open, but it didn't. He then replied later that afternoon implying that we wasted his time by not attending his class. This was when napuno na ako with how he deals with the class. So just save yourself from the patience requirement, please. Other than that, he doesn't ask much from the beadle aside from asking when the class would want the next synch session would be, etc. Grade: Hard A/B+. Easy D. Studying with your friends is a big help for some of us. The grading system of 40-40-20 makes it difficult to make up for a low score, so good luck. Hello, I just had him for MATH 31.3; I hope that's still alright for this review I also read a lot of the reviews here before this semester, so I think I have some idea of what has been said about him, and I'll just say I can see where a lot of that is coming from Sir obviously understands the subject very well, but I do agree with others in the sense that he seems to approach the topics like he's reviewing you guys more than teaching it for the first time. He tends to speed through examples, especially for topics that he deems "easy." The flip side, though, is that he seems pretty open to questions both in and outside class hours. If you ask him about specific parts of a solution in class, he'll readily go over them again, and he responds quite promptly outside class hours (at least in my experience). So I guess that's some advice I'd like to give - don't be shy to ask questions; it may feel awkward since he doesn't really call recitation, but he's very much willing to answer. Checking is an interesting case. There are times, I would say, where Sir allows "shortcuts" in how you write your solutions that can be really time-saving in the long run. But outside these cases, he can be super specific about notations and other details in your proof. I'm afraid I can't fully explain without getting into 31.3 lessons 🥲 but I'd advise to pay a lot of attention in his class and how he writes his solutions. Pay attention to where he allows you to take "shortcuts" and use them to the fullest in the exams, so you can save time and focus more on items where you really need to make your solution mathematically rigorous. One thing that everyone unanimously agrees on is that he takes super long to return papers 😭 (I currently only have an LT and one out of four quizzes) So I'm not too confident in my assessment of how he gives partial points, but my opinion is that you need to be on the right path (in some way) before you can get partial points. If what you've written is completely wrong, I think you should expect 0 🥲 BUT if your solution does follow the right process/the right idea, I think he's just a bit more generous than you might expect, even if you don't execute perfectly. Besides our LTs, we had four quizzes (one of which was take-home). The three that we took onsite each had 3-4 items and took around 40-50 minutes. In each quiz, most of the items are fine (maybe even easy), but there's always one that's significantly harder than the rest LOL So speed through the easier items as quickly as possible and do your best to at least come up with something for the hard item (they're all weighted the same, so this will cost you a lot of points if you can't answer at all). Sorry for the ramble - all in all, I think he's B+/B-able with a lot of effort; A-able if you really lock in and are able to get the hard problems on his quizzes and the LTs. He's definitely not the easiest prof out there, but I'd say he's far from being the worst or the most unreasonable. I do think you will be able to learn something from his class. Good luck,!more

Emmanuel A. Cabral (Math 30.24) (SY2022-2023) (I wrote this partly as an appreciation post and partly because I haven't found any reviews for him) I re-took calculus due to taking an LOA in the height of the pandemic, where online class just wasn't conducive to my mental health, and, needless to say, from what I've heard from my friends and from my own experience with 2 out of the 4 profs that currently teach calculus, Prof. Cabral is the nicest and the most thorough when it comes to his explanations. Pros: - Teaches examples that are the same difficulty as the test - His homeworks are built specifically to prepare you for each exam (4 total) - Teaching style breaks down complex topics into digestible bytes (I truly believe that even a Math-incompetent person can learn Calc 3 with nothing but sir's lectures and async notes) - He's generally approachable and gives off dad-vibes - Also extremely understanding when it comes to sickness (you do need a med-cert, tho) Cons: - He returns exam scores extremely late (I still haven't received my scores for his second, third, and fourth exam and it's 3 days before the semester ends)more

Definitely agree with this! I just like to echo the point about his synchs. It was really difficult to follow since I zone out. When he teaches, there isn't a clear divide per topic and you'll just get surprised that sir is already discussing a new theorem. He follows the book (usually) for his synch lectures. So, if ever you get lost, just refer to the book to know where sir's at.more

he’s also rly considerate and dad vibes 🥺 very reassuring too and not scary unlike other math profs na parang u end up overthinking their replies 🥲 in his quizzes, we just inputted our final answer (no sol) and most of the time it’s 5-10 points PER ITEM 😀 so be careful HSHDJAJDA no partial points 💔 unlike other profs, his quizzes are pretty ok in terms of time and workload! they’re usually 20-30 mins lang and mostly t/f and fill in the blanks 🥰more

Yea, hbu? Tbh tho, he teaches really well but to get a high grade, you have to really understand the concepts (enough that you can prove them). Im also not sure if he still has this but he would always have a B+/A question that is really hard.more

In my experience, I think he curves a bit. I think I initially had a high B+ that was curved to an A. He's not a heavy curver, though, so I think you will need a very high B+ for a chance at a curve. I do remember him giving a take-home quiz, but not a lot of worksheets. Good luck,!more

Had him for 55.1, not 31.3, but yes I think he does curve (not usual in the dept). Multivar calc is very computational, so it’s much easier imo than the guess-heavy, random series. If you did well in LT1, LT2 should be a breeze relatively speakingmore

sir cabral is.... ok! HAHAHAHAHA i had him for math 31.3 and the first mistake i made was not prepping in advance. sir tends to teach quite fast and also skims over a lot of stuff if he considers it trivial or easy. as someone who isn't that good at math (and doesn't have a very strong background in calc in general) i got lost a few times during lectures, especially at the start of the semester. assessments wise, you'll probably have four quizzes throughout the semester (if you're lucky) which are usually 3-4 questions, ~45 mins each. he returns assessments very late (i have no idea what my final grade is gonna be ngl) so I can't say much about his grading, but it's definitely not generous. he doesn't really hesitate to give out 0s, and will not give you partial points for random bs (i tried HAHAHAHA) good luck!!more

[PROS] • super smart • thats all [CONS] • i think he assumes that everyone understands what he’s saying so he doesn’t bother explaining it • as someone with no calc background i struggled A LOT but don’t expect him to care/ help • asynch materials are meh 😕 i wouldn’t say they were sufficient at all (he just gave handouts aka pdfs of him saying pls refer to page blah blah of d book + would upload solutions to practice exercises sometimes) • first quarter synch sessions was just him waiting for questions from the class abt the topic • second quarter synch sessions got better cos he would finally DISCUSS but i still wouldn’t say they were super helpful cos he really doesn’t explain well 😭 • he’s also kinda rude HWHEJBS (i know times are hard for everyone but he was kinda rude on so many occasions) • takes SUPER LONG to return feedback from assessments even if u keep reminding him overall, i’d say i barely learned anything from him for math 31.1 & 31.2 😐 most of it was self-study (thank u professor leonard on youtube what a hunk dat guy) + i had a tutor !more

He used to be the Math dept head. He can be a bit blunt with grading and his demeanor is very "holder of ancient math knowledge"-esque but he is willing to clarify anything confusing if u approach him Tho his default attitude can be very "you should probably know this already"more

[Online] [Semestral] [31.3] hi still a diff subject! took Math 31.3 under Sir but i havent seen any updated reviews on him! Sir is actually quite kind in the aspect that if you ask him nicely, he would prob respond favorably! For all our reqs we always asked for an extension (for problem sets) or a different testing time (for quizes) and he always accommodated us! Our class asked sir for additional reqs since our grade was quite low and he gave us an extra prob set (which he answered like 70% of already HAHAHA) Syncs were kinda … boring HAHAHA Sir also isnt the most organized person when teaching lmao Overall cabral def improved from his last reviews! sir isnt the best but for sure he isnt the worse PROMISE!!more

Took 30.24 under him onsite in a regular semester! PROS: 1. Fast-paced teaching 2. Easy to participate in lecture 3. Cares about students! He’s really nice 😆 4. Takes attendance around 30 mins into the class (no problems if you’re late) 5. Very faithful to the textbook CONS: 1. Not generous w/ partial points (sometimes I got 1/10 lang sa solution LOL) 2. Returns tests late (he was always sick when i asked him about it hahshahah) 3. I found the problems in the exams to be harder than the ones he solves in class 😭 Had a generally good experience with him! Found myself really struggling during LTs but I ended with a B. Was really hard to gauge my performance in the course since he returns tests REALLY late (as in after the semester ends late). Just read the textbook and follow his lectures — also do his homeworks. The first LT is incredibly hard but the next ones are significantly so much easier. Can conclude that its B/B+-able or maybe even A-able if you are already good at math.more
