Unclear quiz windows and every formula must be derived

hi i took him for PHYS 23.21 last semester and he's gotta be one of like the 5 profs that actually made me mad LMAO. I fucking hated that class for one, he doesn't give instructions clearly- we would have quizzes that are open for the whole day (according to what he says verbally) but on canvas is only open until 5pm. he would go about on all these tangents in his lectures that are barely related to the topic and expect you to remember all of them. he wants every single answer you give to start from the basics- and i mean that literally that in our case we had to derive the formulas ourselves for every single question no matter how simple it is kahit na v=d/t lang yan. he would give minus points if you went straight into v=d/t instead of deriving it from d=vt then doing all the necessary variable distributions. hes also extremely pedantic that he will give you minus points for not writing notations or terms in the way he taught them. I got multiple minuses for when i used Vi (initial velocity) and Vf (final velocity) even though i got the exact same solution adn got the exact same final answer just because he used Vo and V instead of Vi and Vf. he would expect your answer to cover all bases of human knowledge possible its virtually impossible to give him an answer that he pleases LMAO. in an LT the problem solving question was abt superman pushing a boulder and we needed to find the force- simple enough i gave a straightforward answer and got the force. but he wanted me to comment on if superman was needed to push the boulder?? dont believe me ill attach a screenshot of this stupidity LMAO when u give an answer he expects it to cover all the fields of knowledge u can find no matter how unrelated it is to physics. he would get worked up and passive aggressive over questions or concerns that you raise at him, which you would need to raise at him because the man explains things like he doesnt even know what he is going to say next. ive had better experiences with "terror" profs lmao because at least with terror profs theyre actually outright bad- this one you just sit there in disbelief because of how stupid the grade you got was sometimes.more

no, and i’m the beadle for his class (STS 10) masusubukan mo talaga antok mo sa klase niya and he still expects you to listen to his lectures bc quizzes are all objective essays (he’s also very nit-picky on grammar), and his ppts are so dated. old and VERY soft spoken, kahit nasa first row k na nakaupo you can barely understand him 🥲 most of the time, idk what’s going on in his classes. it’s almost impossible to participate. seeing the previous reviews, here’s what’s new: quizzes are NOT open notes & he DOES take attendance. for the other reviews on him being boring, being probably worse than a terror prof, and lots of group work, chrue p rin yan he’s very responsive naman whenever i have to inquire about something. and he’s okaaay personality-wise(?). but overall… no. good luck🙏more

[ONLINE] I took him last semester online. Teaching style: He might bore you. 😢 He's old so he talks slow. He has ppts with bullet points, and just elaborates them. He doesn't give ppts iirc but posts summary readings that are very important. Attendance: Doesn't really take attendance but I think being present in class and him knowing that you participate is a plus! 😇 Assessments: He uses Respondus Lockdown Browser 😮💨, take that as you will. 3 exams in total. Exams are essays, which includes concepts and real-life applications he mentioned during class & the summary readings. Other requirements: He has discussion boards, and group assignments (mostly essays). Easy B/B+ 🤓 A if you study his materials & attend class.more

as other comments have mentioned, his discussions are snoozefests. when he instructs for lab reports, he guides the class step-by-step on how to use the materials needed for the report, but gives unclear instructions on what he expects in the paper itself (so in short, useless kahit alam mong paano gamitin ang materials). if you end up taking his class, just keep asking him questions until you're 100% sure of what he wants sa lab report, because he's willing to answer naman, but only what you will ask talaga. parang A-able naman siya pero ayun nga, you have to keep asking him just so he gives you actual clear instructions.more

his workload is fairly okay, 2-3 short dbs per module. his lessons and deadlines are fairly paced tho! 😃 for some of the papers he gives some of his class time for you to work with your groupmates.more

To add, his synchronous classes don’t actually add to anything. You’re better off studying on your own (kung anong ancient ass book man ipapahanap niya sainyo) and even then, this is subject to his ridiculous grading system (which already mentioned) so tl;dr wag nalang. Terror profs may get u bad grades, but Benjamin Chan makes sure you lose every single bit of your sanity.more

Got a C+ for Chan. Idk if it was bc we were fresh out of the pandemic or bc I hate physics, but his class was difficult. His feedback isn't clear, idk what he wants from me sa exers, he's not really considerate, and his exers + exams are more difficult than his examples sa class. To pass, honestly just try to listen sa lecs, answer the exers, pass them, and answer the exams 😭 I have no concrete tips because I tried everything (listen, get a capable tutor (a friend), ask for help, etc) but I still didn't understand a lot of his lessons.more

Had him online in 2021, so I'm not sure if what I remember will apply much. His lectures are on the dryer side, and I don't think his explanations were very helpful most of the time tbh. Most of his problem sets can be done if you understand what's in the textbook, so that's your friend. His requirements for lecture (mostly problem sets) are done by group, and there aren't that many, so they're manageable in terms of work load. Honestly, his lab requirements were far heavier than lecture, but since lab will be done onsite, it's hopefully easier to take measurements this sem.more

currently taking him and i think u just have to give him what he wants (ex. for essay quizzes, backing your answer using the module/ppt he gave) but he’s lowkey unpredictable. Mababa sya magbigay minsan and he gives Fs on quizzes but gives perfect scores on assignments naman. The topics are easy and common sense for the most part that I don’t listen in class and self-study na lang when there’s a quiz Good luck 😊✌️ (will update this depending on what grade he gives me and my friend HAHAHAHHA cc: )more
