MY FAVE PROFFF!!! i’m still taking him but i’d say he’s one of the profs who makes theo fun
ngl i found him quite intimidating at first. he’s the type to lock the doors during prayer, collect phones during lts and would be strict regarding sounds bc if a single notif rang, he would merit deductions to the whole class (tbh i think he just enjoys the thrill of scaring us)
his views on the catholic church are very progressive and he’s not one to discriminate against non-conservative opinions which i appreciated.
teaching style
- he gives us access to a drive with all the readings + lecture notes for each module
- he posts video lectures whenever he’s absent/goes async
- goes in depth on the teachings and tries to give real life applications
- his lectures sometimes felt like a chika session which i found entertaining because he’d go on and on about sex education and would make jokes like “oh my god? isnt that what u say during…” 😭 he also lore drops on his ex HAJAHAJA
workload
- we had quizzes after every module but it was easy (5 questions, true or false/identification)
- we had pair/trio activities that involved watching videos and replying to discussion boards
- group case analysis (count offs) but it was rlly easy and could be accomplished within minutes
- mcq midterms + finals were quite tricky (or at least u wont get away with not studying so make sure to read his readings)
- oral exam
notes
- no gadgets allowed (he suggested us to print the readings but tbh i never did. just pay attention to his lectures)
- he does random recits using index cards but tbh the questions were easy (e.g what comes to mind when u hear the word chastity)
- if u miss a quiz, u miss it
- overall, THE GOAT!!! i wouldnt say he’s an easy a since u still have to put in effort but it’s definitely not impossible if u read his readings and do well on ur orals :3more
just finished our class for the sem with sir ruben yesterday and he's one of the best profs i had!!
readings: if ure not into reading, it might be challenging bc the readings can range from 12-30 pages long so there's a bit of variety naman. but there are a lot of tools u can use online and those can help!! the readings that i did read, though, are very interesting naman so i wouldn't say they're boring, i might just have a short attention span 😆
assessments: the only thing that might stand out are the pop quizzes! but u might see a pattern na rin naman after a while, most likely every beginning of the module. it may be hard bc it's unannounced but if u do ur due diligence naman with reading the texts, you're all good. we had one "media" output (bc it can be any form) which is fairly easy because you just have to introduce yourself but with an application of the readings. then, two one-page reflection papers which i can't give any feedback on yet because they haven't been graded. lastly, two oral exams, midterms and finals. again, if you studied and followed his guide, you'll be good na. his orals don't really have qna portions honestly if ure a yapper that's a plus 😆 he will ask questions lang daw (bc it didn't happen to me) if he's unsure of what grade to give you.
during class: he's not boring at all!! i'm a siesta person and our class is at 12:30-2 and i don't remember any instances where i got sleepy at all. he is fond of giving either life experiences or analogies when it comes to the more complex concepts. i also like how he structured the course like he introduced topics na i didn't know are a part of the course topic (i.e. marriage, family, & vocation) bonus tip: try to remember what u learned in philo 13 (ethics)! he is cery open to questions and also understanding of liberal perspectives/opinions! we have openly talked about homosexuality, sex, and even income inequality
A-able? i can say yes, but not an easy A. i think if u study enough, u can get a high grade. if you study harder, an A is very likely.more

super considerate and patient!! he canceled one of our papers because we were so participative in discussion boards, and gives video lectures alongside text modules. he's also fairly lenient in terms of values, for objective questions about course content you have to follow the lesson but for personal answers and papers you are allowed to disagree and have your own opinion. class was mostly asynchronous with a synchronous session every few weeks, very easy to follow and definitely worth it!more

update! Finally got him. Most of the requirements were done by pair or triad. He has very strict standards with the format of your papers be careful with it or else it can cost you that A like it did to me lol. All in all not heavy requirements and very organized as a lecturer! His canvas was well prepared tbh one of the most decent ones I had for first sem ngl. Around 3-4 major reqs spread out per month! Make sure to get a group mate. Readings were heavy so i did not really bother to read it, just skimmed thru when I needed sources for the reqs his discussions were nice! A/B+ able.more

Francine de Asis Had him last semester and learned a lot from him (vv organized & easy to grasp) 😁 In terms of requirements, we had 1-2 short quizzes about the previous discussion or assigned reading every week (very easy! dw), + 2 long exams and class participation. The long exams are challenging since they make up a HUGE part of your grade, so really try your best on them. Overall, follow his class policies, attend and listen attentively to his classes, and you’re good—especially since the exams are based on his discussions.more

rlly love sir aseneta! i can vouch, he's really good at teaching and explaining— all lectures are interesting talaga and all quizzes are easy up to 5 points lang (True or False; identification) as long as you listened to the lecture. I cant say if its easy B+/A since im currently taking up his class + havent done orals. Major reqs are midterms, finals, and finals... his exam is tricky but not difficult naman as long as you know the lectures! For me he made theo super enjoyable, super professional but not afraid to make a few jokes and anecdotes here and there during his lecture. Even if not required to go to class (doesnt record attendance) I go pa rin at 8 am cause of hm i learn from him 🥲more

Angel Yang (2)!! also would like to add that if you think your second sem will be heavy and you don’t want another course to dagdag to your workload, i suggest you pass on taking her bc her instructions are very SPECIFIC and you will really have to put on some effort (esp with the MIP…) but yeah… if you have no other choice but her, i really suggest taking the course with a friend or maybe make friends there so you have some supportmore

I had a different exp than anon 448. For us, he really slacked off. I didn't learn anything at all and he made ITM difficult for our section. He'd constantly brag about making the most difficult item on the department LT, but also not teach anything at all? I took him intersesh tho so everything was really rushed, especially for his subject bc iirc, he missed a lot of classes for us.
Maybe he changed, but I just wanted to let you know because he was falsely advertised by P2P based on my experience lol. If you end up getting him, please do try to work on his practice tests on your own. They help a little, but I wouldn't rely on them bc the LT itself is more difficult. Ifl our batch failed ngl, they just curved for everyone 😬more

Had him for a different subject but he’s pretty chill imo! (sy 24-25, 2nd sem)
The workload was light but it got a little heavy towards the end given the preparations for final assessments (paper and presentation). The grading components were changed along the way so it really helped most of us since he lessened the assessments. In terms of teaching style, he uses PPTs and has engaging class activities.
He grades a quite high naman as long as you do your best. Consult as much as you can too!!
Overall, I think he was different from the old reviews I’ve read before but in a good way. I’d take his class again!more

Was batch 2 and got him as a TBA prof cos all that was left were borja, johnson, asis etc. so I took the gamble. I’d say very easy A esp. compared to the other theo profs, just do your readings and get a solid groupmate. Make sure to answer every single canvas discussion board rin so you can get the max grade possible for class participation. You’ll learn a lot and he’s very considerate and accommodating. For the papers, just make sure to cite sources properly / add more number of sources than he’s expecting and u’ll get full marks. He’ll instantly reply to an email rin if you have a question. Everything is asynchronous, so you don’t need to attend the synch classes rin. I only attended 1 the whole sem.
TLDR: easy A with minimal effort, get him if he’s available more

JUST TOOK HIM LAST SEM! The best!!! 10000/10! Assessments were quizzes and long tests which are manageable if you are consistent with reading the materials he provides. Make sure to also recite coz may maximum points that you can get per session! Sir appreciates it when you share your takes on stuff. I remembered when we had 1 on 1 consultation, Sir told me that he remembered the stuff I shared sa class which normally would not have mattered for other profs. From that I could tell that Sir is really open for new perspectives and takes on things—and he really takes to heart whatever you share.
I also like how Sir critically discussed the lessons. TBH, it was an 8 AM class and not a day has passed that I did not look forward to his class kahit maaga pa sched ko.
You can get an A if you work hard and really value the lessons he shares.
Seeing previous reviews from years ago saying that Sir is an Easy A, I think he might have changed standards. Coz, it’s not gonna be an easy A, but it’s likely that you’ll find yourself motivated to get an A because the class is really fun.more

I was batch 2 and got him as a TBA prof and it was one of the best decisions ever! Most requirements are by group or partner (1/2 of your current group), and you'll be sticking with them the whole course. So general advice is to get good groupmate asap HAHA
Readings are not light and more on the moderate side but he usually discusses them naman in his modules so no need to overanalyze the readings. Requirements involve 2 partner papers that are very light (analyze a song/create marriage vows), graded discussions, reflection paper, and final group paper (draft and final separate for grading). Surprisingly he grades pretty high for a theo prof with most groups getting near perfect (with effort of course), so i know a lot who got A.
In terms of discussions, they are very consistent and he really tries to make the lessons easy to understand. Very accommodating as well. 10/10 would recommend!!more

He grades based on COMPLIANCE instead of learning. His rubric heavily comprises formatting, just one error in citation or spacing can get you minus 10%.
If you're someone who's neurodivergent and/or has problems sticking to a really strict set of rules (He even decides your essay's title), a prof who prioritizes learning over compliance could be a better fit.more

Had him SY 2020-2021 4th quarter. Agree with all the above comments. Easy A. As long as you follow all the specifications for the requirements - which are meticulously listed in the rubrics part of the syllabus anyway - he'll say you "exceeded expectations" and give a perfect score. I think the average class grade for most of the assessments was A, based on Canvas. He also uses a lot of anime gif's in his ppt's echoing the comment above :)more

had him for theo 13 for first sem ay 23-24! one of the best profs 🫶🏻
- reading assignments were very manageable (almost always less than 10 pages) and easy to understand. all the readings were accessible through a gdrive folder which was very helpful.
- discussions were always engaging! i usually don’t like theo but i loved listening to his lectures. he really explains well.
- he’s strict when it comes to gadget use!! you’ll have to have the readings printed out + you have to keep all your devices on silent/off
- we had 10 short quizzes and 2 unit tests throughout the sem. quizzes were heavily based on his lectures, so if you listened well you would be able to answer well. unit exams were on the more challenging side imo, but if you did the readings you’ll be more than ok.
- A-able!
overall, you can really feel that he is passionate abt teaching! super loved his classmore

hi! I don’t know how recent the the syllabus change you’re talking about occurred, but I did take his class 1st Semester of AY 2023-2024.
By this time, there was no vow/song assignment. It was mostly quizzes and 2 long tests. In my opinion, the quizzes were easy. However, the long tests were quite difficult(?), or at least, you won’t get away with not studying.
Personally, I love Sir Aseneta, and I learned so much from his class. Probably one of my favorite college profs ever. I heard he was stricter during my sem in comparison to the sem before me, but just turn off your phone and you should be fine.
Definitely take him!! I’d say your letter grade will depend on the amount of effort you put in. An A will be a little challenging to get, but definitely not impossible!!more

Hi! Adding to the first comment, his subject is definitely more on the objective side. No papers, almost all were quizzes (identification, MCQs, and T/F questions), some fun seat works, two exams, and an orals at the end of the sem. A fairly light subject, course-work-wise.
His lectures will definitely stick with you. He tries his best to discuss multiple perspectives, and is very much open to a discussion (when time permits).
I suggest you attend ALL sessions, especially those na you think many will cut (bc he gives a lot of bonuses when it happens). All you need to know about his exams are in his readings, quizzes, and DISCUSSIONS (especially).
You might be tempted not to do the readings, but when time comes for the exam, make sure you have at least browsed them kasi he sneaks in several questions which answers he didn't discuss, but are in the reading.
All in all, a 100/10 class for me. I'd go back to third year just for him lolmore

We didn’t have oral exams for him but we did have quizzes (sometimes announced, sometimes surprised) and we had two long tests that covered each half of the course. His discussions are fun and he can be makwento but he never goes off-tangent. His approach to teaching theology makes even those jaded towards religion appreciate the lessons.
He’s very strict about gadgets though so make sure you print your readings ahead of time and your phone is on silent or its off kasi he’ll really send you out 😭more

Vouch for Sir Aseneta! I genuinely enjoy his class and he teaches really well. The way he structures the modules also makes sense like you get to actually see how these different lessons are connected to each other. However, he does require you to read the material beforehand and this can be heavy bc sometimes there’s 3 readings with 10-20 pages each for a lecture. He does random recitation by index card but you don’t have to be right about the answer, you just have to answer and that’s counted as recitation na. He also gives class notes beforehand which imo is very helpful.
He’s also very strict but you get used to it. He’s strict about the no gadget rule and actually sends people out when their phone makes a sound during class T-T or if your outfit is showing your midriff.

Aseneta if u rlly wanna learn!! His lectures are great and I think A-able as long as you put in effort (as in,,, effort). He also gives class notes so u dont have to be bothered w writing everything down.
