hi yeah unfortunately they do that without notice. it happened to me for math 30.13. i enlisted in silvestre’s class during early enlistment and during reg enlistment I randomly checked my math again and they changed him to a terror prof. but luckily since I saw it I was able to change it to another one. if u havent paid yet i think u can still enlist in another class.more

MALLARI MY GOAT 🫶 Had him for both 31.1 and 31.2 and he’s great at teaching, super enthusiastic + super kind in general. The only downside is he’s absent a lot so sometimes lessons get rushed quite a bit :(more

really good teacher! you’re in good hands. he really cares about his students and always encourages them to work in groups because he believes math should never be an endeavor done alone. math feels less intimidating when he teaches, but he still gently challenges students to think outside of the box. he’ll never make you feel bad for making a mistake; he’s very open minded to several approaches to doing math!more

Had him for calc! He's super understandable, approachable, and tries to explain the lesson clearly. He's also always available for consultation and it helps a lot even when you just observe other people consult. He gives a lot of supplementary materials for plus points and generous naman for partials. Super great Math prof! A-able.more

Ok for sir buot: 1. Discusses too fast. Like, all of us are still copying his first problem and he’s already solving his second problem 2. Gives hard tests. Please practice a lot!!! What he gives in his tests are way harder than what he discusses 3. Told the whole class that he’ll curve us and “siya na bahala” then took back his statement during finals 💔 4. He’s pretty lenient naman w partial points. I remember getting 1 point for a problem I couldn’t solve (1 pt for effort ganon). Overall, pretty difficult teacher 🥲. I suggest practicing a lot talaga!more

Note: long read incoming The thing with Math 51.1 is that if you have a lot of high school math competition experience (PMO level), it’s the easiest math course you’ll take in Ateneo (yes, including Math 10). If not, to put it lightly, iiyak ka. Intersession classes are always fast, and this class is heavy, so don’t be surprised if you struggle to keep up. Because it’s also a very proof-heavy class, you need to write your solutions carefully and clearly, otherwise you will lose points for some otherwise minor mistakes. Therefore, expect about 5 people in the batch to get straight As in everything because they’re math contest veterans, while everyone else gets Cs, Ds and Fs. It’s that kind of class where the best thrive and the rest fight to survive. On that note, I had Sir Buot for Math 51.1 last intersession and my sister had Sir Mijares for Math 30.14 last second sem, so I think I can speak for both of them. I’ve heard from other math majors that Sir Mijares will teach the first two weeks and then Sir Buot will take over, but take that with a grain of salt. Anyway, both of them are kind and accommodating, and both give quizzes that tend to lean on the easy side. Short-term, you should get good grades in the quizzes; long-term, you might struggle in the long tests because there is a large difficulty spike. Sir Mijares loves to meme and joke around, so class discussions should be fun, and it does reach students effectively. I wonder how he’ll make his topic (likely methods of proof, logical equivalencies, basically expanded from Math 10) memeable because it’s probably the most formal topic in this highly formal course. Sir Buot, on the other hand, is more formal and structured, which imo fits better for this course, but the downside is that I feel his teaching style highly caters to contest veterans. As an element of the contest veteran set, I got the lessons quickly, and when he commented on things that I failed to consider, I knew what to do quickly. But if you’re in the complement of that set (grabe yung Math 51.1 brainrot), you will not know what to do even if he gives you hints, to the point where he had to conduct a forced midterm consultation with everyone who was struggling. In summary, if you don’t have a lot of experience in mathematical olympiads (in which case this course is child’s play and you just have to be careful not to do anything stupid), you MUST do math major habits like group studying with coursemates, drilling past LTs, and going through the textbook. Both teachers will lay the groundwork that you need to pass the course, but to excel and get an A, you need to develop your problem-solving and proof-writing skills on your own. The nature of the course means no teacher will accept sloppy work, so you really need to show maximum care and effort in your solutions to get a respectable grade. Good luck!more

Only had him for 31.1 and 31.2 so far and he’s a very fair grader! He’s approachable and is vv good at explaining the lesson! By fair grader I mean you get what you get, but he’s not terror by any means like our upperclassmen told us!:] He gives a LOT of opportunities to bump up your quiz component so that you can pull up your grades if you get sub par LT scores.more

OMG SIR MALLARI 🫶 Loved his class so muchh. You're in good hands, as he really makes sure the class understands the concepts. His problems are sometimes challenging, but if there's anything you don't understand he's very very open to questions! He'll even go out of his way to repeat the solution just to make sure his students grasp it. If ever there's a project, just make sure to really apply the concepts he taught. But like the other comments said, sir is absent quite a bit and also doesn't reply to his emails. Overall A-able and one of the best profs!!more

he’s really helpful and encouraging in class! you’ll learn for sure but if you have any concerns outside of class hours, you won’t be able to reach him 😓 he’s very unresponsive and has the tendency to cancel classes (if need be) super close to his class time or right when his class was supposed to start A-able with effort! but his class needs a lot of brain powermore

Also had him for calc (Math 31.1 and 31.2) 🙂 Super great prof! Very patient and approachable. He really tries to make all the info digestible. He’s the type that would be willing to repeat or explain what he was saying just to make sure his students get it. Synchs are not required but are definitely helpful! He posts the synch recordings on the same or next day and rewatching also helps a lot! Not much content on canvas other than the recordings and the PPT (usually the same as the one used in the synchs) but sometimes he posts a bit of supplementary materials especially if the class asks for it. He grades pretty fairly naman and is considerate with alternative solutions/partial points. Consulting is definitely key if you do not understand any parts of the lesson hehe he’d be very willing to help! B+/A-ablemore
