A lot to do, but he makes a real case for why humanities matter

B+ with really insightful essays and interesting outputs - We had A LOT to do for his class, and as a management student, it felt tiring or parang pointless. HOWEVER, he’s good at justifying why we need Art or generally humanities courses no matter what our undergrad program is because we make well-rounded decisions. Legit, we had a whooole session of him yapping about this which I treated as a podcast (while playing blockblast) and I agreed with a lot of what he said. - I think this was a good ArtAp class because of variety. We analyzed or we looked at different kinds of art—not just paintings or physical stuff but also essays, tech, etc. as art! We wrote a bunch of essays, recorded a podcast, did an art haul, painted, and prepared a final output (which can absolutely be ANYTHING). Sooo I would say this class was very holistic. It’s not nakakaumay or boring wherein all we would do was critique art (which was my initial thought). His passion was, in a way, inspiring. You could see he’s really trying to be a good teacher in terms of the knowledge, ethics, and skills he can share/instill. He also gives timely and constructive feedback - This class will really compel you to use all parts of your brain to come up with good essays & recitation points. If your work is great, he’d present it in class. He really values insights and effort. - Art is subjective and it’s all around us, which is anything! But in my experience, this class is like 80% english class (cos of essays or analysis/interpretation) and 20% actually doing the kind of art you would expect (painting, critiquing a painting, etc)more

Sir Alfred was one of my favorite profs! For ArtAp10, he has some really interesting insights and lessons on art, how it’s analyzed, how works become considered art, etc. If you really engage with the lessons, you can learn a lot about how art impacts modern society. For workload, he did have a bit of a heavy workload. Iirc he had two essays (one at the start and the final essay), a group video, a group podcast, and a final artwork. Groups were assigned randomly for us, so just pray you have a good group. For the podcast, he required us to go to an exhibit outside of Ateneo, so that might be a bit inconvenient for you (tho it was a fun experience ngl). He also gives readings, though you can just skim them. Just make sure you can say something about the reading in the next class, since he does expect participation from the class (he’ll start doing quizzes if he notices that no one’s been reading). For grading, lowk he was a bit strict 💔. He really looks for deeper analyses of works for both essays and podcast. For the final artwork, he also grades it based on how well you were able to express your own experiences and emotions into an artwork. Though I do think his class is B/B+ -able, it takes a bit of effort for an A. Overall, I highly recommend sir Alfred! His classes were fun and very insightful.more

Hi~ Sir Alfred was my prof a year ago for PH Design. I had fun and enjoyed his class. There's a mix of required and optional resources (readings, videos, etc., all provided) and he expects around 3 discussion board posts (including replies) every module. He also ties the lectures to things like food, astrology, even brings in memes, so they're fun to go through! Then there are a couple major reqs in the form of short essays, a food/recipe review, and a podcast. He gives good feedback & grades and is v considerate about deadlines if you can't meet it talaga. (Not sure how lenient he is now bc my sem with him was during the bagyo last Nov kaya din he was chill about deadlines.) He is generally easy to reach and open to chatting even about things unrelated to class. He's v kind, does little mental health checkups, and like the other comments^, he's very makwento even on the DBs. All in all a very chill and fun class. Just enjoy yourself and make sure to do the DBs!more

update: i think sir alfred's class is definitely a-able. i personally thought the material he chose for the modules was very interesting, although the modules can be very lengthy and hard to understand at times. the modules mostly included readings and videos. he held one synch class a week wherein attendance is not required; however, he shows supplementary material in them, and it is a good opportunity to ask questions. what i like most about sir alfred is that he gives feedback about your work, and he often responds to whatever his students write in the discussion board, expounding on their questions and helping them answer them, giving suggestions, and helpful material. the workload in this class was pretty average. i found the readings to be quite heavy, but the requirements for them were enjoyable and comprehensive. sir alfred also wanted us to answer at least 3 discussion boards per module. he was also very understanding about deadlines.more

Hello! I was under sir Alfred for the last physical sem of Philippine Design and for another class called Portfolio Development. Overall, sir is pretty chill and a very fun person to experience--as he mostly likes to check up on people and what they're doing (he's very chikable). Sir Alfred tends to give substantial comments (IMO) based off his personal worldview of design mixed with what you wanna be as a designer. He's very nice in general but in terms of criticism he won't cut it short. The lessons in PH design are also very fun as tbh it's one of the defining classes of the course! If you're looking for a fun & meaningful experience I say go for it! 🙂 more

Hello, I don’t have him for Art App (I have him for Phil Design), but he is definitely a very good prof. He is however a bit of a harsh grader, so you need to make sure you put a lot of effort and thought into your outputs. In fact, he pushes you to take risks creatively, so make sure to do all that. Discussion-wise, his discussion are very interesting naman, so you won’t fall asleep in his classes.more

You’re in good hands!! I had him as my Art Ap prof during my first year and he was one of my favorite teachers. Super chill and really encourages critical thinking so you’ll learn a lot talaga! His classes are very much discussion-based so a lot of the time in class is dedicated to sharing and exchanging ideas with both your classmates and with him as well. Since he really does encourage critical thinking, he expects the same when it comes to graded outputs so I would recommend brainstorming long before the deadline of the task if u want a high grade hehe. Either way, you’ll learn a lot from the comments you’ll get from him so don’t worry too much abt it! Overall one of the best art profs I’ve had so far!! 10/10 would take his class again if I could 🫶🫶more

good luck, girl. SGSKSJSJS okay but seriously try ur best to be unconventional as you can with your submissions as well as try to connect your submissions with who you are. It sounds vague but he appreciates authenticity no matter how messy it seems. He doesn’t like “surface level” Filipino design elements (think Kultura) if they aren’t well researched enough. Be very intentional with every aspect of your submission and he will appreciate the effort. Authenticity (and ig unconventionality) is very important to him!!more

no pop quizzes but he will ask the class if they read the reading and will ask a few volunteers for their findings. He doesn’t like it when nobody in the class reads the readings / nobody recites so please find time to do so! It also gives you opportunities to mention said readings in your outputs so that he knows you applied what you read! Imo the readings did broadened my perception on what I think Philippine design is!more

His work load is very heavy, he makes you do a researcher paper 2 to 3 artworks AND the zine plus your journal, other ARTS 102 profs only make you do the zine and multiple drafts of your final art work (plus your journal). He's also personally difficult to understand compared to other profs (but that could just be because his teaching style and comments didn't align with my process). Personally I'd only take him if you're an ID major and can catch his vibe, or if you really want to challenge your art. If you have a project in mind that you want to execute as closely to your vision as possible I recommend a different professor.more

Sir Alfred’s a great prof but he def can see right through you. Never BS your papers because he will notice and will call you out. During ArtAp 10, Just be authentic! doesn’t matter if you do or don’t like the material or the artworks. Basta whatever you think, make sure you explain and articulate yourself well. I’ve never gotten an A in his classes but he’s still one of my favorite FA profs, super thought-provoking discussions. Very worth it to put effort in his class. B-B+able, just have care about the course.more

haven’t had him for ArtAp10 but honestly, just give a shit about what you’re writing, doing, or saying. Take him as a prof and the course as an advantage to explore your own relationship with art. I got an A in another course with him as the professor by doing that. Always consult, Sir is open to discourse whether in class or for projects, and very much open to helping you find your footing. And honestly, submit on time. Most of the people I know who got less than A were just tardy with their work.more

Got him for a different subject but Sir Alfred's a vibe prof-wise. Grading wise he's very particular with what he wants so consultation is the key. His consultations are very helpful naman and you'll learn alot from him as a prof. He likes it when his students speak up so make sure to always recite in class. He usually asks if the class is amenable with the deadline so make sure to tell him your thoughts kasi once it's final it's final. Also his deadlines are 5PM not 11:59. Also he knows when you're BS'ing so just don't make your work more important than what it actually is because he's fine naman with it being simple as long as it makes sense. Overall B/B+ able with great effort.more
