Open notes MC plus essay, orals if he suspects AI
While I took him for 118 (Econometrics 2), he did almost the same thing with his 117 students so my answer will probably suffice. For the first LT, he gave an ONLINE OPEN NOTES multiple choice exam with an essay part which was surprisingly somewhat tough. It’s not heavily mathematical, but rather was focused on more practical and intuitive aspects of econometric theory. For example he might ask you something like “What happens when errors are serially correlated? A. OLS estimates are biased B. p-values of OLS estimates become unreliable C. Standard errors become unreliable” Here, he wants you to pick EVERY correct answer, so there can be more than 1. I don’t think you can score highly if you didn’t review. I also doubt he will make this online given that he had an “incident” last semester, where he had to conduct an oral exam/interview where we had to defend our essay answers. Generally the essay questions simply ranged from interpreting results to criticizing/defending applications. For example: “The researchers wanted to determine how much schooling affected lifetime earnings. They specified the following: earnings = \beta_0 + \beta_1 schooling + \varepsilon. Do you think that the OLS estimate of \beta_1 is a good estimate?” For the second LT, my class specifically negotiated that it be an oral exam (I think he likes orals given he’s particularly very aware of AI use). You can also opt to take a written ONSITE exam. The oral exam questions (and the written exam questions as well) are similar to the essay questions we got in the first LT.more

Took this class the first year they offered ECON185.78i. We met onsite and online alternately. The class was just basic python assessments and one paper/project at the end (this is assuming he hasn't revised his syllabus). He assumes you have zero python knowledge, so its okay if you don't know python. For the paper, we were just tasked to write an econ paper that uses data science (something like linear regression was sufficient, but you could do fancier stuff). He gave the project specs pretty early, and didn't really require any draft submissions (it was just 1 submission at the end of the sem), so just make sure you don't cram it. Use consultations to make sure you're on the right track with your paper. Overall, easy A.more

Hi, just finished taking him this semester. Got an A but I was very stressed 😭 PROS: - Grades super high - Super kind and understanding with students' concerns - Canvas is extremely organized CONS: - Onsite sessions can be kind of a blur because sometimes nothing's really happening - If this class is being taught in R and you don't have any prior knowledge to R coding, it's gonna be really stressful 🥹 - At least for most of the sem, sir's late around 30-40mins per session - You'll get your grades at the end of the sem na Overall, easy A, but oh my god the last 2 quizzes and project were stressfulmore
