Considerate, realistic lectures, fun lab fieldwork

pros:
1. miss is very considerate and approachable! she puts value in the work that you do, and is also flexible in the deadlines she gives. you can see her passion and experience when she’s doing a lecture in class
2. what she teaches in class are very realistic. she gives concrete examples, most of which are present in the ph
3. if there’s time, she holds asynch classes on the session before the long test to help students study. not all the time though
4. she’s willing to switch to online learning if there’s legit reasons like bad weather (if there’s no suspension) she usually holds a survey and tries to understand the situation of the majority of the class
5. i found the lab fieldwork rlly fun! we went to a nearby stream around cov courts and examined the water quality there. the lab report (research paper) for that was kinda heavy tho
cons:
1. i’d say her quizzes were the most difficult ones i had encountered throughout my whole academic life. other subjects require you to just memorize stuff and you’re good to go. meanwhile, others require you to have a comprehensive understanding of the topic, with less focus on the technical terms. for envi sci, it’s both 🙂
2. there’s a CRAZY CRAZY amount of stuff you have to study. there’s 6 modules and every module has like around 3-10ish sections ++ other media and sources (documentaries, videos, research papers). there’s also the ppt, which has info that won’t be in the modules in canvas. for a long test, it’s usually 2 modules each, and we literally feel the dread when envi sci long test is approaching 💀
3. i have trauma every time i recall my test scores 😓
4. if you’re not fond of memorization, then envi sci isn’t for you. i remember having a flashcard set of 150 ish items and i still encountered stuff on the lt that i wasn’t able to review 🙂↕️
5. the lab research paper is rlly draining. sometimes, it’s group work but there are times that it’s individual work too. she gives us a week to finish it though, so it could be a me problem HAHAHAmore

Agree with these sentiments 🙂 Ma'am Ethel is very nice professor and is generally open to moving deadlines if you give her heads up and try to negotiate with her. I did not take her under ENVI 10.02 but another lab subject for my course. Here are some tips I did that may help you undertake her lab subject.
1. Befriend and get to know your groupmates. You don't necessarily need smart groupmates to excel her expectations. As long as your group understands the objectives of an experiment you will surely be able to answer her questions. Just be familiar with your pre-lab procedures🙂
2. Do your post-lab reports seriously. Do them asap so you don't forget what you guys did during the experiment. Most of the time ma'am will be giving you feedback about what you lacked or missed from your post-lab. Don't be afraid of her feedback! Feel free to ask her to expound what you did not answer well and try to keep in mind her suggestions.
3. I'll be assuming you guys will also take care of a plant during this subject. Just be careful and research what would be the easiest plant to take care of. Be familiar with the plant species and be consistent with taking care of it (watering, trimming, etc.). Also take into consideration where you put your plant because of different weather conditions and possible days your group will not have classes.
4. Just be nice to her and listen to her discussions! Ma'am is very objective in teaching which can be boring sometimes. Make sure nalang to at least remember your reqs that need to be passed.
Not an easy A prof but you will be learning a lot from ma'am considering her strong background with fieldwork. Good luck and I hope you have fun.more

Hey anon! I believe there’s another post which also talked about this :)) There r a variety of thoughts bc of the jump from online to onsite classes.
1. For quizzes, prepare to have them every week. Readings are given naman some time before, although the lesson will be thoroughly discussed after taking the quiz, but do note that the modules are very info-heavy and it requires the effort to both understand and memorize.
2. For long tests, do study each and every detail. These LT’s are composed of identification, modified t or f, multiple choice, or matching type. By details, I mean statistics, percentages, terms, etc.
3. Do choose good grpmates! Usually grpworks are what pulls up your grade naman, for as long as you follow instructions.
4. If you take her for both lab and lec, I’d say that both subjects can account to most of your total workload. There are times when you’d do a lab report and research simultaneously.
In general, take the first weeks seriously because of the assessments, especially if you want to get exempted from the final exam (I rlly recommend trying for this, since it has been mentioned nga that the modules are info and data heavy)
!! It’s not an easy A/B+ subject
But on another note, ma’am is open to deadline extensions, and is considerate naman when you want to ask for help. Goodluck anon!more

her LT’s usually have identification, modified true or false, and multiple choice. You’ll think that her tests would be easy but that won’t be the case when you’re taking the test na. She’s very meticulous when it comes to details, as in even yung mga part sa lesson na feeling mo hindi lalabas (like dates, percentage, ano kulay ng ganto) biglang nasa test. You’ll survive if you memorize everything (like literally everything). Hard B. It was my heaviest subject back in 1st year haha so yeah, prayers🙏more

as a prof, she's actually indeed nice, insightful, approachable and considerate !! like u can really learn something naman talaga from her class.
however, just like some recent reviews here, idk if her class got more difficult this sem, but it's definitely NOT chill :( The items on her long test and quizzes are VERY SPECIFIC to the point that u should review even the small details such as specific percentages, all guidelines of a certain law, or all examples because it involves a lot of identification and enumeration (not surface level). These assessments are so unpredictable and it's relatively hard to even get a B bcs u can't predict the items or test types. it's literally information overload.
we also had an experience where it's announced before the test itself that we have to illustrate a very specific type of diagram. we did not review that at all bcs it seems so irrelevant but :(
well, if ur good naman in memorizing a lot of words, concepts, and numbers, u should take her class !! but for us, it's not really that chillmore

She is a very pleasant teacher and she definitely knows what she’s teaching.In terms of assessments, we have quizzes every week and three long tests. You actually have to study for them especially since they are very memorization heavy. As much as possible, be very detailed when studying and understand the bigger picture of the concepts because it really helps. It’s not an analysis heavy class, mostly just rote memorization based.And if you get a grade of B before the departmental final exam, you’ll be exempted from it. Actually, it’s very kaya, just don’t take this subject for granted and you’re good.I got an A in her class for envi lec naman but I really did exert effort in studying. You got this!more

took her class during the first sem, and as a freshie HAHAHA i was not prepared- class discussions are chill and easy to follow but her assessments can be quite tricky- her quizzes were mostly identification, so you really need a good grasp of the terms and not just the concepts [you have to be super detailed bcs she can ask about the most specific things]- her long exams which included drawing a disposal system HAHAHA but we barely discussed it in class- she’s nice and approachable in class, so address your concerns during class time. she rarely replies to emails.- the departmental finals were honestly easier for me than her long testsmore
