Kind book-club class with a lot of readings

helluuu <33 this is for currently still taking her class so can’t give a full-on review but will talk about my experience in her class <33 requirements/graded activities based on syllabus: •30% participation •30% journal writing •40% finals ma’am is very kind and very understanding with us. tho she provides us with a LOTT of readings (mix of ignatian readings and both digestible and quite technical philo readings) and the way she conducts the class is like a “book club/talk” (i can’t remember her exact words na). anyways, she expects us to read the readings before the class and talk about them and engage in discussions and answer the questions she’ll present in class which are based on the reading. but she asks naman who has read the assigned reading (without judgment) and she adjusts at times to more of the lecture mode/type if necessary. the thing that i feel i may have overlooked and/or haven’t given as much as i should perhaps in her class is that class participation is an integral part of our grade (30%) and personally i feel like need to actively work towards it as an introvert/shy person HUHU. so feel like the class is more suited to students who are a bit more outspoken or vocal, and/or those who are able to form insights from the readings. but she provides easy-medium level discussion questions naman with some basic questions like how was the reading, how did you feel. and then has deeper questions related to the reading. at least for our class, ma’am also provided perusall assignments where we can comment on certain portions of the reading and respond to each other and this counts as participation points to cater to people who don’t often recite in class (like me at times wahaha). i believe we need to get at least 16 participation points to get an A for that aspect. after certain sessions/classes, ma’am also provides us with journal entry prompts where we are expected to write our journals until she collects them at a latter time after a series of journal entry questions. in terms of grading, i’m not really sure how ma’am grades since she returned our journals a month ago and she just responded to our journals but just mentioned that she’ll grade it at the end of the sem so i’m not really sure what my current class standing is HUHU. other than that, i think ma’am tries her best to break down the more technical readings and she tries to relate it to her own experiences to better understand the modules. and she’s always enthusiastic and brings a lot of energy when teaching even if there are times when the class feels dead wahaha. she’s a millenial mom, but honestly i find her and her anecdotes/experiences still relatable and/or understandable. <33 if you’re someone who values learning, i would recommend her <33more

Taking her this sem and I would say she's a good prof and her work is on the lighter side. She regularly assigns readings on Perusall and grades your annotations, so your pre-lecture reading also helps with your grade na rin! For this sem, we did module summaries in the blue books, and her rubrics for that were very clear in the syllabus naman. I can't say much on orals yet because we haven't gotten to that part of the sem. I really appreciate the way she discusses because she's so insightful and does her best to level with you, and she's very organized. She's also very kind. Side note: if you're into women philosophers, I noticed she was very intentional with choosing them for our readings this semester. Overall, I would highly recommend her!more

Currently taking philo with Ma’am PJ this sem!!! During discussions, she explains terms by like giving real world examples/examples we would understand as students. In terms of workload, since it is philo, there are a lot of readings (sumtimes long ones), but she gives time to finish them. She’ll make u annotate the readings on perusall as well for addtl points. Aside from the perusall annotations, you’ll have module summaries (essay in a blue book) after each module. She also posts discussion boards for addtl points. Not sure what the finals would be tho coz i’m still taking the class. Overall, you’re in good hands!!! She’s kind and understanding 🤍more

When you say “taking it alone” do you mean na you dont know anyone in class? If so, I would say yesss:) I personally enlisted in maam pj’s class w/o knowing anyone rin nmn:))) (tho when i checked the ppl on canvas may mga kilala nmn pala ako 😅) but all goods regardless if u know ppl or not:) met new ppl nmn rin in that class:))more

Bello! Maam PJ is super chill and forgiving. She’s also very progressive. She’s A-able if you recite a lot in class. She also has this thing where you annotate and ask questions on different readings, and she takes note of those. Make sure she remembers your name! The workload isn’t very heavy, just quizzes per module (iirc), written midterm, and the final oral exam. Always reference the readings in your written tests because she really wants you to tie that in. The oral is chill and she lets you do it with a friend, plus the thesis statements are given beforehand. Good luck!!more

She’s very motherly, classes are very simple and straightforward.. requirements are just 4 module summaries and a final oral examination. I suggest you always read the readings she posts on perusal, participate in discussion boards and perusal assignments as they merit points to your overall grade as well. She’s not an easy A but with substantial effort in both reading and participation, it’s possible. Goodluck!more

I had her this first semester, and she’s very nice! I’d say she’s thorough in what she teaches, and you can learn a lot from her if you pay attention, but it’s definitely not an easy A. Make sure to do the readings and, more importantly, take detailed notes during the lectures (this will save you if you end up cramming for the final orals :3). She takes attendance seriously, so don’t even think about overcutting. As for the requirements, I’d say the most important part is how well you integrate the readings with the class discussions, as well as the completeness of your arguments and claims.more

read, read, read and do well on the module summaries (essays that will show ur understanding on the topic, the question varies per class). she gives feedback every module summary so make sure to integrate that on your next essays. in our class, she only gave 2 people As on the first module summary. she explained what she was looking for after that though so we can perform better on the next one. also review well on the orals since its 30% of your grade!more
