had him for the same class last sy! it was his first time teaching it, but i'd say it was super chill bc we just watched films every meeting HEJAHSHA. our requirements were composed of “movie reviews” of the film we watched, to be submitted a week later. it's self-explanatory, except that there are certain factors u have to include in ur review to get a perfect score (tip: sir doesn’t rlly like “symbolisms” he prefers application or reflection of the film in the real world, at least based on my experience!). he also assigns readings and gives OBJECTIVE quizzes — emphasis on objective bc they’re all 10-item identification questions about the things u usually miss in a reading (like the meaning of *thiss abbv* or when was the director’s bday type of questions), plus a bonus question about recent news related to anything film. sir is really passionate about local cinema and even encouraged us to make letterboxd accounts lmao. i think he’s even a member of a ph film association? i don’t remember huhu. lastly, we had a final group project where we had to pick a topic about filipino cinema and make a video about it — no need to present or anything, just make the video and submit. overall, i think he’s an easy A/B+ as long as u do well in ur write-ups (movie reviews), bc they’re the bulk of ur grade. downside is he isn’t that active in replying to emails/canvas messages and relies heavily on turnitin for submissions. one time my work got flagged as ai, and even though i submitted a gdoc as proof through email and canvas AND talked to him after class to reconsider, he still emailed me a day before grades were released saying i had to redo the write-up and could only get 5/15 as my highest score… so either he didn’t see my attempts or just chose to ignore them yikes anyway, gl! this class was fun either way, and ngl it made me appreciate local cinema even more and inspired me to properly curate my letterboxd 😆more

Hello! Took him last last sem, masaya naman HAHA relatively easy tbh. He structures the course with weekly film writeups provided with guide questions to answer. And on some weeks, objective quizzes based on readings. Also, every film you watch in the class has a required writeup to be passed the following morning! (13-15 filipino films to be watched) Re: his teaching style, chill naman siya ... strict with deadlines but the class itself is enjoyable if you want to have a substantial introduction to PH cinema and the societal backdrop/commentary it had been a product of (esp watching films ranging from 1935 - 2020s). But the class isn't as filled with technical film elements/theories, it just provides basics such as mise en scene, repetition, etc (digestible naman) TLDR: i hope u take the course (we need more people to appreciate ph cinema!) Sir Ron is forgiving and approachable, has a good grasp abt ph cinema, loves pop culture, and he always provides a safe space for his students to geek about their ideas/perspectives of the films.more

Hey! I’d say that you would really need to master the fundamental concepts included in the exams. I think it’s not enough to just know what the concepts are you need to dig really deep. If you can get to the level of being able to explain the topics to yourself (or someone else) without consulting your notes then you’ll be fine. Our class was really good about collaborating so we would lecture each other, quiz each other, ask questions etc. So it might help to do this with groups of people. Because his exams are so bloody like you’ll cry tears you never knew were there. 😅more

Last sy, we were just i think less than 10 in class so each lecture requires a reading that you have to understand and digest but it's easy to understand and you'll have recit the next meeting. Everyone is expected to answer sir's question. Then, there will be quizzes per module i think, short answer questions. Easy lang for me, since the lessons are easy to understand rin. Then we had a final exam which is a short response essay. Overall, I'd rate it a 8/10, but I enjoyed sir's class!💗 Goodluck!!more

"Possible"? Yes, but not that easy like what the first commenter said. I think there would be varying averages with his other classes because of the nature of the subjects themselves. My tip is to take a lot of notes and feel free to ask questions especially if something is difficult to understand. If you're BS BIO/LfSci, that goes for all subjects. The profs are very open to questions and it's also more likely that your classmates will benefit too!more
