Like a magician with numbers, loops never quite close

I had the singular experience of taking Math 60.2 under Sir Kurt, a professor whose teaching style felt less like formal instruction and more like watching a magician perform with numbers. Probability, a subject already shrouded in uncertainty, became even more enigmatic under his hand. Concepts would emerge suddenly, without context or preamble, as if plucked from the air by sleight of chalk. One moment we’d be staring at a blank board, and the next, it would be filled with symbols and strange notations, combinations, permutations, Bayes’ theorem, moment-generating functions all swirling together without ever quite reaching resolution. He drifted from thought to thought, rarely closing the loop, often leaving problems hanging like unfinished riddles.
And yet, his online lectures were something else entirely: soft-spoken, polite, and oddly easy to memorize. There was a rhythm to the way he solved things steps followed one another like dance choreography, which made it simple to repeat... but not to understand. It gave the illusion of mastery, until you were tested.
The exam was its own kind of challenge: conducted online, it required full solutions to be typed out on a laptop, an exhausting exercise that turned logical reasoning into a test of endurance. It was no longer just about solving the problem, but about translating it into neatly typed syntax under time pressure. And when the grades were released, there was no curve, no upward lift, no mercy. Whatever you got, you kept.
All of this was peppered with the occasional Filipino joke or reference quirky little interjections that would momentarily lighten the mood but often left us blinking, half-laughing, half-confused, before returning to the fog of conditional probabilities and expected values.
And in the end after all the notations, the noise, the dizzying sleights of hand I emerged from the class with absolute clarity on just one thing: I had learned nothing.more

hi! had him for math 10 last first sem! he’s really laidback and understanding, and as someone who is bad at math, it is definitely possible to score high grades as long as you comply with what requirements are needed. there are times he even gives points on tests for simply being present. for workload, he gives at least one activity (essay, problem set, etc.)/test per module for a total of around 5 modules and then one major culminating project i.e. video, etc.. for the grading system, he follows the one that most profs use with 92-100 being an A. for things to note, his slides for lectures are quite short and fast-paced as they are summarized, so you might need to watch supplemental videos/search for more materials if you want to learn deeper. he also focuses more on discussing many examples and applications after the lecture proper. he does not require the purchase of a textbook also as he makes readings accessible to students. hope this helps! 🫡more

-block’s beloved weeaboo prof, so damn sweet and it’s a delight to watch him nerd out.
-not too bad, you’ll be given a worksheet per module (online or on site depende), sometimes you’ll be given an essay prompt just to think about math as a concept.
-really not too demanding. really just need to brush up on the formulas and concepts since almost all of these are world problems. he’s not too strict with the solutions but as long as you get an answer and can prove you somewhat know what you’re doing, you’ll score full marks on it.
-bulk of your grade will come from your final which is a 20 minute video on a filipino industry with some statistics stuff in there. really just get decent groupmates, don’t procrastinate, you’ll be fine.

For non math majors (and afaik non honors courses) Sir Kurt says he tries his best to ensure the students pass. I believe that’s somewhat true since he gives opportunities to bawi like homework and recitation. I passed Math 30.13 under him having 47/150 on the final exam. Do take note that he’s strict with long tests in the sense that he’ll deduct points for writing ur final solution on the back of the bond paper and not boxing ur final answer. Ure in good hands + he’s very lenient w switching modalities esp if there’s a heatwave or heavy rain. Oftentimes, he’ll change it himself without our beadle begging for him to switch to onl.more

Recite twice on the board for perfect recit

Take note that you need to recite twice in his class (solving problems on the board) to get perfect in his recitation (which can help pull up your final grade by a lot). He gives multiple opportunities for this !more

Sir Kurt was ok and sometimes the lectures would not be so engaging. He may have been stressed at the time but overall I would still say to go for Dr Garcia.more

Hi! I had Sir Kurt for Math 30.13, not Math 10, but I really like his teaching style and attitude in class. He’s logical and straight to the point. However, some people might find it challenging depending on how quickly they process information. Sir isn’t fast-paced naman. He will also answer any questions you have if you’re having a hard time understanding something.
I think the workload isn’t heavy. Super kaya! 10-15 practice exercises (assignment) per module. Do your practice exercises! It helps a lot.
Difficulty of tests: It’s manageable but requires some critical thinking, so I’d say you’ll definitely learn.
Grading system niya is pretty fair ^^
Just listen to him while you’re in class and try to solve some questions on your own then okay kana :))more
