Ibarra changed, class still emptied out
an updated review on IBARRA, Jose Vener C.! Hello!! Some of the reviews for sir ibarra are pretty outdated, so im here to share my experience with him. Before the sem started, i begged the office to withdraw me or move me to another section, but that didnt work. I even cut my first 2 classes because i was so sure of dropping him (for context our class only had a max 3 cuts) Our class list even went from 25 students to just 11 by the third lecture since so many students never gave him the chance. He for sure changed, and im sure that he got told on by the office because i know several other people who complained to switch classes before the sem even started. I saw old posts where he would flip a coin to see if theres a test every lecture, he probably stopped because he never did that for us last sem. i personally like the way he teaches, i think thats the only class that sem where i actually learned because i had no choice. he uses the socratic method in lectures, so if u arent confident in speaking or voicing out ur opinion then i dont think he is for you. but honestly, its really not that bad. even if u dont know anything or didnt read the assigned readings, he points u toward the right direction and encourages u to read from the book then provide insight. he can also tell when a student is nervous and he will calm them down which i thought was pretty sweet. we had a 3 hour class every week so there would be around 5-6 students randomly called for recitation which would last around 20 mins, he would always dismiss us an hour early. i personally got called only 4 times throughout the sem, but the normal is 5. and he usually grades from 80-95 per recitation, depending on how well u answer. he never really gives a recitation score lower than that (unless u dont attend or choose not to speak at all). for the workload, the hardest part were the readings, we finished the whole book in one sem, so we would have an assigned reading of around 20-30 pages per week but honestly its doable as long as u do actually read them, if u miss a week’s worth of assigned readings u will have to catch up because the next readings continue off from the previous ones. im the lazy-smart kind of student, so take this with a grain of salt, but i would just read the day beforehand and write my notes (gadgets not allowed) and even if i didnt make notes, i could always refer to the book. for the tests, its honestly very easy, especially when compared to the other profs. we would just have around 8 essay questions per long test, and they were very basic situations wherein u provide the law that applies to the situation and why. he also tells the class how to answer the question so that makes it easier. there were around 2-3 long tests (i dont really remember anymore) and i would just study the day of the test itself since the scope was pretty short (even if the readings were long). for the final requirement, u get to choose ur group and write up a contract about a specific situation sir gives and it needs to look pretty professional (appendices, whereas statements, etc.) so make sure u pick good groupmates. the class is onsite but he made a few of our classes online (around 3) i got a B for my final grade, with okay effort. i know some classmates who got a B+, and i wouldnt be surprised if some even got an A. hes also pretty funny! especially if ure the gago type of student, he would practice his stand up comedy jokes on the class because he does comedy part time, he also has a lot of funny stories for the class (he usually gets distracted mid recitation and babbles about his stories, which sometimes helps u think of what to say next). if u are hesitant in taking him, its really not that bad, especially since he changed the way he handles his lectures. sure there are probably other profs who are easy A’s but if u do take ibarra u are in for a pretty entertaining and insightful semmore

Hello! I also took him for LLAW 113 for SY 25-26 and while I generally agree with this post, I think he only got nicer because both his classes went from 28 students to 9. He kept mentioning that this was the first time it happened and kept joking that we were his tutorial session. Back in our first lesson, when we were still 18 people, he assigned a 50 page reading (if I remember correctly) along with 5 cases. He did his usual coin flip and by the end of the class he was angry, half-shouting from our sub-par recitation. That being said, once we were 9 people he definitely mellowed out and got more patient. Also, I was in a 3hr class as well and he said he only dismissed us earlier because we were 9. This is probably because he didn't have as much recitations to go through/grade. Teaching-wise he's a good prof who wants you to understand the core concepts and doesn't encourage memorizing articles. I would take him again, but only if the class size is small.more

this was llaw 113 assessment were: - a few discussion boards - midterm and final exam - final paper (contract) not really a lot of assessments so make sure u do good in discussion boards and recitation as that can bring up ur grademore
